He was right the first time. He was using fhtan in the gher'man tense after using R'lyeh. Therefore, it is spelled fhtan and not fhtagn.

Technically, neither was right, as the R'leyhn' language is not meant to be spoken or used by human tongue, the same way that while 'Kuh-thoo-loo' is the generally accepted name of our beloved High Priest and War-Chief, it really doesn't matter how you pronounce it as it is unpronounceable with out tongue anyways
