Just tossing this out here....

If the picture is real, witch i doubt because of the quality for being a 1959's camera. Those "high end" sharpshooting cameras in the 1959 would cost a fortune, and its not likely that Kids or any common person would own one.
But if the pictures turn out to be legit then my first thoughts would be Radioactive waste dump.

In the 1950 there where a lot of experimentation with nuclear forces and radioactive substances. in the time they did not know of the dangers related to long term or direct contact radiation. Therefore they did not get rid of the radioactive substances in "safe" ways, they normally just duped it in places far from people. The article says that the whole in the ground was dug by hand and not a naturally formed whole that had occurred over time.
Since the whole was dug by men, in the woods, far from people, near abandoned house. i believe that this was a test/dumping facility for radioactive waste.

Ladies and Gentlemen, what the picture's shows is 3 kids in severe pain that's having their faces molten off by acidic water substances, that they foolishly misjudged for being a pool filled with ordinary water.

One of the dead kids had the car keys. He starved.

I think, the camera kinda broke and the film didn't move forward, as it should after taking a picture - This way, two or more pictures overlap and this pic was made.
Oh yeah, also: Fake.
