Dag means day or we also say it as a greeting, short form of goeiedag ( goodday ) ( also the dutch word for mace) :)

'Dag' doesn't mean mace, 'goedendag' does, although we rarely use 'goedendag' to describe a mace. Up until today, I didn't even know 'goedendag' also means mace, lol.

EDIT: I looked it up on wikipedia, 'goedendag' isn't quite the same as mace. But that's enough learning for today.

Not really. There's a specific kind of Flemish mace/spear called a 'Goedendag', which translates to 'Good Day', a greeting. One of the explanations is that it would be thrust into the necks of armoured enemy horsemen, causing them to nod their head forwards as if they were greeting. The most likely (and less awesome) explanation is that it just means 'Good Dagger'.

I'm guessing you live in the Wallonian part or Brussel. I've heard that Francophone education on Flemish language, culture and history is really lacking. A bit stupid from the government if you ask me, considering that they want to the Flemings to stay in Belgium.
