not everyone plays eve. you should've stated that theirs was only three in existence. that number is two now.

There was one event of mass trolling on EVE in which one guy literally destroyed $10,000 for the lulz. He spent a year working his way up a corporation until he had access to their assets, then he took all money and the largest ship on the game. He used the money to place a bounty on his own head then flew around in his unbeatable ship rubbing it in everyone's faces. He eventually destroyed it himself. Bare in mind all this could have netted him over $10,000 dollars, but he was so committed to trolling he'd rather see it burn.

well thats more being an asshole, with a hint of trolling. The only real "trolling" was cleverly getting the ship. The rest was actually him just being an asshat.

The in-game currency in EVE can be spent on real world items (such as graphics card and in-game playtime -quoted from the article above), so while this $10,000 here was probably never spent directly as real money, the value of the in-game money spent would be equal to $10,000 real world money.

Can't say I haven't done something similar in other games, though on a MUCH smaller scale. People tend to get a little diabolical when they're lonely.

in the meanwhile, a guy on EVE spent months funding a $9000 supercarrier, it was destroyed minutes later after an ambush
#184 to #167 - anon (07/11/2013) [-]
Your sense of time is strange. "spends months building it" - "destroyed minutes later"
#226 to #184 - drshkidz (07/11/2013) [-]
Spend months building ship.
It is finally finished after months of work.
Minutes later, it is destroyed by an ambush.
Not exactly how that even went down iirc, but that's fairly accurate.

pick a source of your choosing.

TL;DR:the main executor of BOB took everything, destroyed the alliance and quit the game, locking out trillions of trillions of isk and items forever

A huge alliance with ********* of money, also they were constantly warring but kicked everyones ass until a spy in the ally put in the final blow wich cost the ally trillions of isk.

i think they disbanded in 09 or something.

A 9 thousand dollar warship must have been pretty powerful in combat, so I'd say we should praise the ambushers for one hell of a job well done.
#165 to #30 - ryuryu (07/11/2013) [-]
I also thing he ended up destroying it himself.
#231 to #30 - Rameak (07/11/2013) [-]
my WoW guildie was one of those ambushers, they had over 100 people in the cheapest, most 1 damagingest ships ever, but with items to stop him from using warp. they just fed themselves to him over and over to stop him from warping.
User avatar #241 to #231 - masdercheef ONLINE (07/11/2013) [-]

User avatar #244 to #241 - Rameak (07/11/2013) [-]
kinda yeah, more like a group of 40 level ones raiding Hogger, back in old timey WoW.

I think I remember one time a raid of level 2s and 3s tried attack Orgrimmar. Since I was on a Horde character at the time it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.
User avatar #137 to #30 - sullykid (07/11/2013) [-]
It wasn't that powerful. You can get ships as strong as it for 10% of the price. The only reason it's so expensive is because there were only 3 (now 2) in the game and it's extremely difficult to make more.
#51 to #30 - banhammerfortyk (07/11/2013) [-]

you cannot convert ISK (EVE currency) in to real world currency.
however, you can buy things with ISK such as extended game play time (you have to pay monthly for the game) and other things like computer hardware
#91 to #64 - manymen (07/11/2013) [-]
No. can't get real money, but you can get fake moneys with real money. it's from a piece of ingame equipment called PLEX (pilots license extension) basically it lets you buy gametime with ingame money OR real money. that's how they translate it. 1 plex = about 540 million ingame money. That ship was worth around 300+ BILLION ingame money.
User avatar #72 to #64 - Riukanojutsu ONLINE (07/11/2013) [-]
You can sell/buy the game currency. since ships like that cost about your mom's weight in in-game currency they translate it.
#89 to #72 - manymen (07/11/2013) [-]
Can't sell ingame currency. That'll get you banned and the money sold taken out of the game. you can only buy it.

EVE is a magical place. Almost entirely player run, with player ******** and all.

I remember reading the story of a guy that was running a huge bank and people would deposit stuff there. And after years, everyone thought it was legit and run by the game itself. Then the guy bailed with a gazilion currency.

Or a big ass war between two large groups of players. And then part of one group sold out, and backstabbed their allies.

Ow the lulz.

This makes me sad. I don't even play this game and I feel sorry for that guy. The whole story saddens me. A spy lead his ship into an ambush? What kind of work had to be put into that just for some asshole to destroy it like that. At least make it a straight up fight.
User avatar #324 to #271 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
its a war, completely player made
the revenant is the strongest ship their is and the last titan near that size took 300 different people to kill in a straight up fight, basically that thing could have won a war for them
it was smart to take it out
#278 to #271 - zoocalu (07/11/2013) [-]

User avatar #325 to #278 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
and its still owned by one guy and you cant just buy the shop for 9 k
its worth 9k in games but in reality the price is like 9,000,000,000,000 in game

User avatar #326 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
and fyi to everyone, not sure if this makes it worse or better
he didnt actually buy it with real life cash
just there is a money to isk(the currency) system
so that is how much money he would have lost if he used money instead of isk
so instead of losing 9k he just lost over 1000 hours of his life
User avatar #328 to #326 - kfjesus (07/12/2013) [-]
Which in working man's hours is like eight grand. I'd do it for the laughs.
User avatar #329 to #328 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
the humor is that it got killed by like 100 ships you can get in the first few hours
the bigger ships have issues targeting the smallers ones
its why pirates like myself go small and fast and in large numbers
so we can **** things, steal things, and get out before peoples friends arrive
also we enjoy shooting miners
cause they picked mining
User avatar #331 to #329 - kfjesus (07/12/2013) [-]
Have you ever played the online browser game called dark orbit? All of the longer standing players tool all over the new ones because the older ones have better ships. This is opposed to the old wild tangent game dark orbit where you're a space miner fighting aliens.
User avatar #335 to #331 - hideyowives (07/12/2013) [-]
yeah i think they made the newer ships smaller and faster to prevent that
sinc ethe oldest people with the biggest ships could sit there for hours trying to shoot a frigate with speed boosters and targeting jammers....but if the frig stops moving for a second or two bad things happen
User avatar #336 to #335 - kfjesus (07/12/2013) [-]
Now that's a great way to keep new players interested.
