There was one event of mass trolling on EVE in which one guy literally destroyed $10,000 for the lulz. He spent a year working his way up a corporation until he had access to their assets, then he took all money and the largest ship on the game. He used the money to place a bounty on his own head then flew around in his unbeatable ship rubbing it in everyone's faces. He eventually destroyed it himself. Bare in mind all this could have netted him over $10,000 dollars, but he was so committed to trolling he'd rather see it burn.

The in-game currency in EVE can be spent on real world items (such as graphics card and in-game playtime -quoted from the article above), so while this $10,000 here was probably never spent directly as real money, the value of the in-game money spent would be equal to $10,000 real world money.

well thats more being an asshole, with a hint of trolling. The only real "trolling" was cleverly getting the ship. The rest was actually him just being an asshat.

Can't say I haven't done something similar in other games, though on a MUCH smaller scale. People tend to get a little diabolical when they're lonely.

in the meanwhile, a guy on EVE spent months funding a $9000 supercarrier, it was destroyed minutes later after an ambush

Spend months building ship.
It is finally finished after months of work.
Minutes later, it is destroyed by an ambush.
Not exactly how that even went down iirc, but that's fairly accurate.

pick a source of your choosing.

TL;DR:the main executor of BOB took everything, destroyed the alliance and quit the game, locking out trillions of trillions of isk and items forever

A 9 thousand dollar warship must have been pretty powerful in combat, so I'd say we should praise the ambushers for one hell of a job well done.

my WoW guildie was one of those ambushers, they had over 100 people in the cheapest, most 1 damagingest ships ever, but with items to stop him from using warp. they just fed themselves to him over and over to stop him from warping.

It wasn't that powerful. You can get ships as strong as it for 10% of the price. The only reason it's so expensive is because there were only 3 (now 2) in the game and it's extremely difficult to make more.

Okay, 2 things:
I have never played EVE online, only heard of it, so when I saw this I thought $9000 meant 9000 ******* dollars as in he blew $9000 of his own ******* money, the post never said it was in-game currency and from what I've seen usually games refer to their currency as credits or the like.
I have seen people blow insane amounts of money on online games before, so again, I thought it was real money.
Jesus ******* christ, who the hell wouldn't think the same damn thing when seeing this ******* post without playing EVE?

The real money auction house in Diablo 3 is used by a lot of players, where you buy and sell gear for your characters, but the selling price is capped, in Europe atleast, at 250€ ($325) per item. Still if you pay that for each slot, you will end up using $4225.

you cannot convert ISK (EVE currency) in to real world currency.
however, you can buy things with ISK such as extended game play time (you have to pay monthly for the game) and other things like computer hardware

No. can't get real money, but you can get fake moneys with real money. it's from a piece of ingame equipment called PLEX (pilots license extension) basically it lets you buy gametime with ingame money OR real money. that's how they translate it. 1 plex = about 540 million ingame money. That ship was worth around 300+ BILLION ingame money.
