Are any generalisations fair?
User avatar #91 to #87 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
This is going to sound harsh but I think stereotypes are quite important. The brain likes the box people in organisationed little piles until they know enough information that the person get's their own box for themselves.

That person with 'Juicy' printed on the back of her sweatpants is probably a bit easy, that guy wearing fashion-forward outfits and drinking quadshot soy caramel mocha spice lattes is probably gay, that sort of thing. These kinds of generalisations I think is fair because the brain has a natural tendency to do so (which is why I also think someone who states that they don't judge anyone ever is full of **** ).

Currently I wear a lot of black and I have a shaved head, people have assumed I am a thug and a lesbian and I don't blame them. I fit the stereotype. But here the difference is that as a girl who is a fan of Loki, I must only be a fan of the movie franchise, I can't have known about his appearances in comics nor the traditional Norse Mythology, cause I'm 'just' a fan girl. Does that make sense?
User avatar #92 to #91 - tylosaurus (04/02/2014) [-]
Yeah, but really? Aren't you doing exactly the same darn thing?

What if that person wearing "juicy" isn't how you expected the person to be?

No generalisations are fair.
User avatar #97 to #92 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
I'm not saying no woman wearing Juicy sweatpants is every conservative, I'm saying if I saw a woman wearing juicy sweatpants I'd assume they were either easy, a dim valley girl or both. If they can/would like to prove me wrong on that initial assumption then they can go for it. I'm also not calling her the scourge of dignified women (like this person is calling me the scourge of the Marvel Universe fandom)
User avatar #99 to #97 - tylosaurus (04/02/2014) [-]
and you don't seem to realize that I never claimed you were calling said fictional woman any of that.

My point is that all generalisations aren't really fair. Bad or good intentions.
User avatar #100 to #99 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
I'm going to reverse that on you. "And you don't seem to realised that my use of 'I'm saying' isn't literal but rather in a rhetorical sense." In terms of natural tendency and instinct, what is and is not fair? Is an omnivorous diet fair? Is certain people having superhuman intellegence fair? Is that superhuman intelligence being at the stake of normal cognitive function fair? It's a coping mechanism, and every single person does it. Blind, deaf, mute, or all three. Intention is entirely regardable.
User avatar #101 to #100 - tylosaurus (04/02/2014) [-]
That's not reversing it, as you completely changed it. Mind you.

Also, how is it rhetorical when you say "I'm not saying no woman wearing juicy sweatpants is every conservative, I'm saying..."
That's obviously implying that I said that the woman would be "every conservative".

What's fair would be to take into consideration each individual human rather than "boxing them".
That is why it is not fair to generalise. You're bound to catch someone who's not fitting to your stereotype in it. Someone who probably doesn't want to fit in there.

Now, you see. Your rhetorical arguments make zero sense here as they serve serve point. I don't give a crap if you stereotype someone as something. I'm making a point whether it's fair or not to generalise.
User avatar #102 to #101 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
Ok /ELIF time.

The original comment said that 'not a single ******* girl gave a **** about Loki.' A definite, restrictive and imposing generalisation, which in my opinion makes it unfair. On the other side of the coin, I am not saying 'not a single ******* girl wearing juicy pants has not been on a one-night-stand'.

This dude is unnecessarily hating on a whole group of people based on a generalisation, I/we make probable observation based on what we've seen/experienced. If someone does more than walk past us in a shopping centre, and we learn about them, we pick them up out of that big box of 'Smelly teenage wannabe rockstars' and place them in the box of 'This dudes name is Chris.'

User avatar #51 to #50 - capslockjunk (04/02/2014) [-]
There weren't millions of girl fans of loki before though, there were maybe hundreds of thousands.

Those women just have sense.

Your points are silly, my point is that after the avengers out came millions of girls that hadn't known anything about superheroes that are suddenly huge fans of them now because of loki.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=48DRGDiKo2U
watch the beginning and all will be explained.
User avatar #54 to #51 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
My point is that these supposedly 'hundreds of thousands' of women (by the way, Sweden, Denmark and Norway have a combined population of 26 million so what you're saying is that less than 8% of women that have nord heritage gave a **** about it) are being curbed out in favour of these 'millions of girls' being the majority.. which makes it a generalisation. A generalisation I personally find unfair and insulting because I do like Loki, not because of Tom Hiddleston but because I find Norse Mythology to be quite complex and unique.
User avatar #72 to #54 - thetowelboy (04/02/2014) [-]
lol @ thinking a woman giving a crap about her nordic ancestry means she's a fan of Loki.
User avatar #77 to #72 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/02/2014) [-]
Would you not say that a Christian is a fan of Jesus?
User avatar #151 to #77 - thetowelboy (04/02/2014) [-]
I would, but Loki definitely does not serve the same purpose in the Nordic Mythos as Jesus does in Christianity. A god of trickery and lies in a polythiestic religion is not the same as the savior of a monotheistic religion. It would be more realistically "would you not say that Christians are fans of Satan?" to which I would say no, they're not.
User avatar #152 to #151 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/03/2014) [-]
But Satanists are a fan of Satan. Loki is not Satan, maybe he's the Snake on the tree in the garden of eve. I'll turn to Hinduism, Hinduism has many many different gods and each person has their 'favourite'. Sometimes it's region specific, sometimes it's trade specific, sometimes it's just favour.
User avatar #153 to #152 - thetowelboy (04/03/2014) [-]
I agree, that's why I put down my original comment. I'm sure some women that honored their nordic ancestry favored loki, but I would wager that it wasn't most or all by any means.
User avatar #154 to #153 - thirdjess ONLINE (04/03/2014) [-]
I would also agree that they wouldn't be the majority but they are a large group of people who were 'fans of loki' before Tom Hiddleston took the part. They being ignored, because for some reason whenever opinions and statistics come up, it tends to be 'American audiences = the world'
User avatar #155 to #154 - thetowelboy (04/03/2014) [-]
Because American media is the clearly dominant one worldwide. Although I agree no demographic can be ignored, "Nordic women that worship or otherwise appreciate loki before the first modern Thor movie" is definitely a bit of an outlier of a group. haha

True but it's one of many. Women who had genuine interest in comics before even the orignal x-men films, women who had interest in others cultures out of sheer curiosity (myself) and so on. I wouldn't have a problem with it, truth be told, if this man hadn't phrased it as he had.

User avatar #21 to #17 - drldrl (04/02/2014) [-]
Considering comics can cost up to $20 now, I'm not surprised it boosted their fanbases. I know I like a lot of em because of it. I would never spend the money on a comic to read it for 5 seconds and put it down. It's way too expensive to get into now.

But he is actually really darn cute. I'm not gonna fanboy or anything over him, but he is cute, that's all I'm saying.
User avatar #23 to #15 - assrocket (04/02/2014) [-]
To be fair, he kinda is.
The 'cute' factor isn't so bad, though. It just means more people will be aware of the comics and some might even go the extra mile and try to read them. I wanted to, but it's intimidating at first because it seems like every single series you read is going to be interconnected with every other series until you're not sure what you're reading anymore.
I think the complicated connections between each comic series is what stops most people from wanting to read them after seeing a movie. If you can help a Loki fangirl to actually read the comics, she might be more tolerable.
To combat that problem myself, instead of rushing into a seemingly bigger, more complicated series, I started reading the New Teen Titans recently because I watched the show as a kid, and loved it. The Teen Titan comps on FJ were the extra push I needed.
I dunno. I only just started reading them and I got to get my sea legs cap'n.
User avatar #93 to #15 - Loppytaffy (04/02/2014) [-]
Same can be said about Lucifer befure Supernatural, or Eyptology before YuGiOh, or politics before Hetalia.

Just because something isn't popular before a big movie, doesn't mean it's a bad thing, it just means people are interested enough to learn about the origins from the people in the know. It makes learning popular, it makes it relatable; Nordic god of mischief? Who cares about dead religion. Give him a cute face and a sob story and suddenly people want to know more about this guy. And that's really important, schools should use this method to their advantage. It doesn't matter how you get into something, what matters if you come out knowing more about things that shouldn't be forgotten.
User avatar #94 to #93 - Loppytaffy (04/02/2014) [-]
(and actually I learned about Norse mythology when I was 9 and I always though Loki was awesome and that Odin was a dick. Stop assuming nobody knows about things before they get popular.)

I'm sorry, but that logic is kinda flawed, because, let me draw some parallelles:
"Before Forrest Gump cam out, not a single person sympathised with Forrest."
"Before JKR wrote HP, not a single person rooted for the heroes to beat Voldy."
"Before Fleming was born, not a single person used antibiotics."

See?
User avatar #78 to #73 - finnxplain (04/02/2014) [-]

I don't really understand the hype from girls about loki's looks.

Honestly if I had to go gay and bang either thor or loki, I would pick thor.
User avatar #88 to #52 - emokoneko (04/02/2014) [-]
Thor would be considered good looking to some women...but a bit too much on the muscles (to me, at least). Plus, Loki has the bad boy vibe going, in a mischievous way instead of a gonna-beat-yo-ass way.

I wouldn't bang either, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Loki. Seems like he'd be more likely to try things. Thor seems like a get in, get off, get out type.
#123 to #88 - anon (04/02/2014) [-]
^^ This **** right here. ^^

Thor is cute and all, but I just prefer men with less muscles.
#131 to #123 - ynxi (04/02/2014) [-]
androgynous looking men usually come with a bad boy vibe or super cute, either ripped or skinny, and because their features look more female, females can relate beauty better towards them.

User avatar #32 to #6 - rockamekishiko (04/02/2014) [-]
because it's not anywhere near good enough to justify all the references and praising on here
#33 to #32 - artyomthebadass (04/02/2014) [-]
Well it provides the basis for a lot of perfect captions so...that kinda outweighs what it lacks
User avatar #34 to #33 - rockamekishiko (04/02/2014) [-]
that's true for just about anything
#37 to #34 - artyomthebadass (04/02/2014) [-]
Then there is nothing wrong with the amount of praise it gets..either that or we ******* praising anything at all, which would be a bit silly.
User avatar #62 to #32 - wishingwell (04/02/2014) [-]
Considering that the movie is number 3 of all time box office hits (number 1, if you don't count James Cameron flicks) i'd say it's more warranted than lots of eg. animes, cartoons and televisionseries in general.
I loved the movie and can't wait for phase 2 is finished, so they can begin on phase 3, but each his own ofc.
User avatar #63 to #62 - rockamekishiko (04/02/2014) [-]
just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good. like call of duty or avatar (the giant smurfs movie) lil wayne, drake, justin bieber etc
User avatar #64 to #63 - wishingwell (04/02/2014) [-]
But that goes for everything - it's just about letting people enjoy what they enjoy, without trying to undermine/bash/change their pow, and being a prick about it.
Like about the call of duty - don't play it, if you hate it.
Avatar - don't invest in a ticket for the upcomming flicks (same goes for the upcoming Avengers, if you dislike it)
And with music, it's just ridicoulous to complain about, in an era where almost everyone has a ipod/mp3/smartphone, with personalised playlists.
Like personally i don't listen to gangster/street rap, but some of my close friends does - but that doesn't mean that i have voice my opinion about it, when they want to listen to it at a get-together.
But if something has sold more than ever before, along with having high ratings fx at metacritic and imdb, it's safe to presume that the consensus is that it's good/better than lots of other movies/games and such.
User avatar #65 to #64 - rockamekishiko (04/02/2014) [-]
people can like it if they want, what the **** do i care? nothing wrong but that doesn't mean it's good. many other great films set good standards and avengers was just not a very good movie

You are right that it isn't 12 Angry Men, Godfather 1/2, 2001 A Space Odyssey or other of the great classics good ,subtext wise, but it's not everyday that a movie comes that can enthrall several generations for hours with action, jokes and a fantastic universe, that one can get invested in, leaving one with a wanting for more.
Imo it's like this era's Terminator 2.
But again, each to his own.

User avatar #134 - gunthar (04/02/2014) [-]
i know that ill get a lot of red thumbs but i dont understand how movies like The Avengers and Frozen have become so succesful, i mean i enjoyed them both but Frozen has become the biggest grossing animation of all time an i dont think is anywhere near movies like Shrek, fantastic Mr fox, The iron giant or How to train your dragon. Or mybe im just older and dont enjoy them as much, but i doubt that.
User avatar #142 to #134 - occamsrazor (04/02/2014) [-]
I've seen all those but Frozen and that's kinda how I feel, also I get blasted for thinking the Avengers was just meh, and I'll see Frozen eventually but it's just not looking that amazing. I like to get excited about good movies, like Wolf of Wall St and other big recent ones but I don't think any of the animated movies in recent years have really come close to the standards of Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, etc. so when I do see Frozen I'll go in with no expectations just so I'm not disappointed.

1:47 is when it happens if you want to watch youself, but in movies and such, they obviously don't actually hit each other so when Tom hand his hand on RDJ, he probably had no force in the squeeze so RDJ told him to do it harder. As for the bottom right scene, I'm guessing its a jokingly sexual related comment, not sure on that part.
