I'd honestly say don't, for your own good and for several reasons everyone else has already said, but that's your own choice.

sebgun also suggested you play Botgames if you do start playing so you can get a feel for the game and, hopefully, not get yelled at ... too much. But don't play too many bot games, or you'll lose your feel for the game.

I've seen way too many people play nothing but bot games and get level 30, only to be matched up with people that have far more experience than them against actual players when they try to play a regular game. Needless to say they get absolutely destroyed because they keep doing silly things due to being so used to bots just sitting there.

its a fun game once you get it but if your new i wouldn't recommend playing pvp because 1 mistake is too many for some people and you will get bitched at and its not fun once the rage starts flying (however its pretty damn fun if you are lucky toget matched with good sports) if you do decide to give it a shot (if you live in north America add me Blubble is my name and i can show you some of the ropes) i would start with bot games or coop vs AI because in a bot game nobody cares what you do.

I don't experience that, actually. What bugged me was how unfriendly everyone was to new players. I find MOBA games to be really easy, so I did well from the kick-off, but whenever I had newer people in the game, everyone would flame them. Probably why so many people who tried stopped playing.

If you play in the lower levels on EUW, you'll never see this.
#93 to #63 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
If your problem is with people bad mouthing you because you don't know how to play the game... then League isn't your game either. That game, from personal experience, is far worse than Dota when it comes to that sort of thing, at least in higher levels.

Everyone yells and actually quits/reports if you don't follow the League meta in higher levels, and in lower levels if you make one mistake you're liable to get ignored for the rest of the game.

In Dota if you remain calm and simply ask a few questions here and there... People /will/ help you. They might still seem rather angry, going "Well you stupid noob, you have to friggin' buy wards and ward this spot and this spot, you dumbutt."

In League they're liable to just spam pings and yell, then leave.
User avatar #99 to #93 - rainbowrush ONLINE (08/16/2013) [-]
No one gave me any **** when I played DotA, but as I said, when new people were on my team, the chat was just **** . I don't accept that kind of behavior towards new players.

In higher elo, no one cares about meta at all. I have no idea what you're going on about.
#102 to #99 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
So you don't always have a carry+support going bot, someone like Darius going top, an AP mid and a jungler?

If you don't, then you're probably as high in the "elo" as you think, because that's all they do.

Also I've never seen anyone in Dota yell at a new player. I've seen them say some things if someone does something dumb, but usually the person they're yelling at is either mute or one of them is just complaining about everything.

I've liked C9 for a while now, back when they were Team NomNom. Now that they have said that they realize how Korean pro players are better than the NA pro's and have been busting ass to do their best and be number 1 in LCS and get to the level of Korean pros. I don't like them cause they are winning, I like them cause they have set a goal, worked hard, and are getting what they deserve.

I think League would do a lot better if they stopped following a Meta and let players do what they want without a problem and if they'd stop making so many characters while charging IP/RP for them. It would also help if every character didn't have some sort of gap closer and had more differences between them.

HoN was very boring to me, even more so than League, because it was more like a giant arena game where everyone dies in 3-4 moves and whoever gets the first hit wins. The colors in that game seemed to blend together too, making it hard to understand what was going on. It's worse than League, in my opinion.

Dota has it's faults as well, such as certain characters always being way overpowered for a few months (or years), but in my opinion it's better than the rest. It actually supports doing whatever you want, so long as you know what you're doing. I can jungle as one of the "hardest" supports in the game, or I can roam and get kills that way.

Basically... Dota 2 > League > HoN, in my opinion.

Riot has said multiple times that they never try to enforce a Meta game.

Like how they refuse to label certain champions as Mid laners or top laners.
User avatar #126 to #106 - fukermanjensen (08/16/2013) [-]
what? Riot does force champions into their lanes, hell for the last few champions its become even more obvious as they have a full paragraph dedicated to it on the page that introduces you to the champion
You need to login to view this link

big paragraph under the gameplay section for the new lucian guy saying BOT LANE...then going on to describe his exact role in team fights. That right there enforces he should be played ADC in the bot lane, just like the community says it should and the meta they DO enforce.

Honestly, i like LoL better than the others solely for style purposes, they're generally the same for me other than that; but I'm not going to turn a blind eye to what they do wrong.
#108 to #106 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
Just because they don't enforce it doesn't mean that it doesn't happen...

Almost every game has the players going with a carry+support bot, a top laner, a jungler, and an AP mid.

Also, they DO label the characters... Even on their website they have things such as "Assassin, Support, Tank, Fighter..." and in the community each of those are put at a specific lane.

#122 to #108 - tdotlegitz (08/16/2013) [-]

Are you just talking about the community forcing **** onto other players?
User avatar #110 to #108 - marcelinethequeen (08/16/2013) [-]
"let players do what they want"

I'm speaking against that with my comment. I'm just saying that Riot doesn't force any body to do anything.

And? That has nothing to do with it. It just says what THEY are, not where they go. A squishy champion with high damage is labeled an assassin. Someone who balances tankiness and damage are a bruiser.
#113 to #110 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
I never said anything about Riot. While Riot does say that they don't enforce the meta and they don't "label" them as you're putting it... they don't do anything to stop it either.

Many people yell and report people because they don't follow what they want to happen, or they treat "new" players like complete crap and basically make them want to uninstall the game or just play with bots or friends that won't yell at them.

Well, sometimes, at least. I've seen people yell at people in bot games too.

#86 to #78 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
(I forgot to put this)

Also, player base doesn't mean the game is good or bad, just that a lot of people are playing it.

Farmville, I believe, had way more players than League at a time and may still have it now.

Does that make it a good game? No, not really.
#85 to #78 - bluemagebrilly (08/16/2013) [-]
I don't really think that's true. Dota is increasing in number every day and it isn't even "free to play" yet, since Valve has decided to give it to player in batches rather than allow anyone that's anyone to download it and launch it.

HoN is also pretty popular, as much as I would rather not admit it, and has a decent player base.

Plus, I kind of feel that League will die off once they make a big mistake... which they will, eventually. They're too crazy about making new characters and focusing on tournament players to not make a mistake later on.

I'd say it has a pretty low learning curve for most heroes, as the Steam Guides make it really simple. Heroes that take a lot of micro are hard to learn anyway, but the guides make it really easy to learn, say, Sven, or Outworld Devourer.
