Just so you know.. he's pretty fun to play.
User avatar #7 to #3 - Noah (01/25/2013) [-]
It seems like unless you have a good fed carry, he wouldn't get much done. Can he do decent damage himself?
User avatar #8 to #7 - Bion ONLINE (01/25/2013) [-]
He is kinda like Nasus. Without farm, he's only okay. With farm, he's crazy. I haven't had the chance to play him in a real match yet (I have a horrible internet connection), but from what I've seen, he can be pretty good. Some AS from a Nashor's or a Zephyr will make you do some crazy damage, as every single soul you pick up increases your damage dealt by 1, every attack.

I'm working on trying to make him into a viable jungler, because all that CC is just devastating to gank with. And a Frozen Heart and Abyssal scepter will give you enough armor/magic res, a nice mana pool, a good chunk of magic pen, and some much needed CDR. You don't need many AP items, as each soul you collect adds to it quite nicely (not enough to sustain entirely, you definitely need SOME AP items). His E is awesome to jungle with... it does decent damage, but it has a very short CD, and keeps the monsters off of you, giving you slightly more sustain. And his Q passive is great when moving to the next jungle camp.

The only real problem I've faced so far, is being able to clear the jungle, the first time, quickly, and easily. He just doesn't put out any damage until he's gotten some souls (even like, 10 souls would be enough early game). Oh, And his Q active can also reach jungle camps faster, as he can jump to enemies like Amumu or Lee Sin.

I am dedicated to making this work.

Oh, and as a support he does fine. Supports don't need to do much damage, and he has crazy CC to be a support. As well as a team shield, and a way to save teamates from dying. But even building as a support, getting those souls will add to your overall damage, A LOT.

TL;DR: Very low damage early game, pretty damaging late game, when built to do so.

i played him in PBE before his passive was reduced (it used to give that extra magic resist for souls) and OMFG he was the BEST anti-mage. he could shut down anyone.
User avatar #9 to #8 - Noah (01/25/2013) [-]
So basically he's a good support, but sorta snowballs with a good CS?
User avatar #10 to #9 - Bion ONLINE (01/25/2013) [-]
Not even the CS. He doesn't have to last hit. Anything that dies by him will potentially drop a soul. Big minions/monsters and champions are guaranteed to drop one, and small minions have a chance to (not sure what % it is, but it's not bad). Picking them up will charge your Q passive, making your basic attacks deal 1 bonus magic damage for each soul collected, and can increase by roughly 3 times the amount, the longer you wait to attack someone. With an experiment, I had about 90 souls, and if I waited until my Q recharged, it could do a bonus 220 damage. That's WITHOUT the basic attack damage, and the AD % bonus, which is also from your Q.

Collecting a soul will also increase your Armor AND AP by 1, and then slowly scaling down. Your first soul is worth 1 point each, then it drops to .99, and lower and lower. When I had about 90 souls, each additional soul was giving about .77 AP and Armor for each I picked up. Still not a bad increase.

it doesn't have to be by him the souls drop anywhere on the map depending on how many souls he has (souls have a less chance to drop later in the game)
User avatar #24 to #23 - Bion ONLINE (01/28/2013) [-]
No, they have to be within 1500 units of him to drop. They're also invisible to the enemy, unless Thresh is also visible. So if Thresh is in a bush, Minions can drop souls but the enemy won't see them until he comes out.

And I don't think that the amount of souls decrease, because each soul is worth less and less. And big minions/monsters and champions will ALWAYS drop a soul if he is close enough.

well now i know thank you for the info

Yup. Now I just need to get a chance to start actually playing him and not just gather all this info for no reason.

Sounds sexy

It's pretty kool. I just set up a mastery and rune page for him, and about to see if I can make him jungle well... lol
User avatar #18 to #12 - Noah (01/25/2013) [-]
I actually bought Thresh this morning cause you said he was good.
He is sooo much fun. I love being able to just stop an enemy from escaping like he can.
The only problem is that he is kinda squishy unless you build some armor/health.
User avatar #19 to #18 - Bion ONLINE (01/25/2013) [-]
Yeah, he's slightly squishy early game. But late game when you have even just one tanky item, collecting souls makes you really tanky at that point. I'm glad you like him though.

Well, I never got much work with getting to him to jungle. But I did play a few games that he was in.

He gets VERY tanky late game, and still does some decent damage. Hoewever, people seemed to have missed his Q every single time... So, I feel that his potential is even greater.

Some tips if you decide to play him:

-very mana hungry, so mana items early game (frozen heart or iceborn gauntlet) will be a great choice.
-very poor damage early game, so either collect every soul you can get your hands on, or grab some AD (unless you're strict support, obv)
-Don't think there is a cap on souls... our Thresh had over 150 souls in my last game (note that that is 150 bonus damage with his EVER basic attack. which gets increased the longer you wait between attacks)
-Land your ******* Q's.
-Spam your ******* E's
-Level W first for the reduced cooldowns on your shield
-Late game, get an attack speed item. Even if you're support. If you have 150+ souls, you will be doing some crazy damage.
-Either use your ult early, or don't use it at all. It's got a pretty long cooldown, so you don't want to waist it. And it drops people down to a halt (99% speed decrease!)
-His E has very very very slightly shorter range than his AA. if you're JUST in range to hit someone with your AA, then you're E won't hit them.
-Work on casting your E in the direction you want... Learn to push away and pull towards you. Nothing like bringing the entire enemy team in on you and your carry...
-Throw your W into team fights, and stick back, till you're sure someone is gonna initiate. That way, if someone falls behind, they can get the shield from the lantern, and if need be, launch up to you.

I guess that's all for now.

I like explaining things....

I'd like to, and I plan to, eventually. Tbh, I'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to LoL in general. I just had my first ranked match the other day, for instance. (though I've played for about 2 years now, it's been on and off).

When it comes to champs that I like, I typically look into them a lot, try to find a build that suits most situations, find the skill order for them, etc etc. The only two champs that I know 100%, that I could right a guide with no flaws atm, are Volibear and Riven. Those are my favorite champs and I know just about everything about them. lol. I "started" a guide on mobafire for Voli, but it's just an experiment to see how making guides work. Nothing publishable. lol

Voli... is much more than a tank. I have carried more games with him, than I have playing as a strict tank.

His Q is a gap closer, and a throw. Gives a decent damage bonus, as well.
His W increases his attack speed, scales with Health, and does 1% more damage per 1% HP the target is missing. Meaning when they're at 25% HP, it does 75% more damage.
His E does some nice AoE damage, particularly to Minions, but it has a potent slow, and wide range. And then his ult charges his basic attacks for...12? 14? 16? seconds. Doing ~100 magic damage, every single hit, and bounces to 4 extra enemies, prioritizing champions.

Built with a Frazen Mallet, Berserker Greaves, Warmog's, and a Phantom Dancer as a core, he is ******* deadly. That's about 4k HP, and his passive heals 30% of it, which is about another 1.2k HP. So he effectively has 5k HP right there. Plus ~100 AD per hit, plus ~100 magic damage per hit, a slow and a throw that recharge rather quickly, and a bite that can kill almost any squishy champ when they're at 50% HP....

This **** isn't even max level, nor full build.

Basically, if you have a frozen mallet and/or red buff, then no one is going to get away from you. You deal ridiculous amounts of damage for being a tank, while not losing that tankiness at ALL.

His main 2 weaknesses are that ignite can counter his passive, and that sword that does 4% HP damage. But the later is only scary if they have ridiculous amounts of attack speed, and again, only if you don't have magic resistance.

Darius is pretty OP. But I can usually go 1v1 with Darius, and win, easily. When you have that much HP, Dar's usually fail to kill you with their ult, and then your passive kicks in and you regen HP more quickly than damage can be dealt.

I ******* love Volibear.

But Riven is my top favorite.
