The Humans are strange, and small creatures.
No other being in the universe has the same concepts for war as they do, with a willingness to surrender that surpasses their stupidity. Why would anyone take prisoners when you could simply annihilate your opposition?
Their “wars” of the past had shown many times over that leaving survivors could cause another great war in less than a generation.
They are weak and stupid, so we decided to show them how a war is properly done, no prisoners, only death for these hairless beings.
Or at least, that was our plan.
In our first ground battle of the war many of our opposition had surrendered, their foolishness was broadcast across our dominion, and their pitiful empire. Thousands of human soldiers, slaughtered without a chance to fight back, the entirety of known space was shown the strength and glory of the Zernith Dominion.
How does that old human phrase go? “we had opened pandora’s box.”, with these attacks we had unleashed all that is evil within the Human Empire onto ourselves.
It wasn’t immediately apparent, but as we won battle after battle, we started taking less prisoners, and more casualties, we had backed them into a corner.
And in doing so, we discovered something unusual about their psyche.
When a human has no other options but to fight, they can become like a wild beast, almost primal in nature, and that’s what we did to them. We gave them no option but to fight.
More reports came in of single humans making wild attacks when commanded to surrender, and a revival of their old ideas of war, “kamikaze strikes” as they would call them. It showed in their combat doctrine as well, they started using unusual methods of attacking us. Loud blaring sirens at night across the hellscape of battlefields, poison hanging in the air, small rodents sent out laden with disease, even ships ramming ours.
These weren’t attacks of the body, as much as attacks of the mind.
The disease and poison never killed outright, it simply let the body and mind linger on in a weakened and destroyed state, the sirens at night prevented sleep, causing battle madness.
And within 2 standard cycles we had learned why it is that the humans are so used to surrender.
I just pray that the Humans show us a kindness accepting ours.
