I think someone would only make that kind of statement if they really have no clue "how to program".

The vast majority of programmers in my company use emacs and execute gcc on the command line. That is "programming". Show me how you do that comfortably on a PC. On a Mac: no problem, same workflow as under Linux, Solaris, etc.

I think the only programmers who would actually prefer Windows are those who develop software that is very specifically targeted towards Windows. Anyone who is implementing generic software (such as embedded programming where you have to crosscompile your software for a different target) will nearly always prefer a Unix-like system like Linux or OS X. Programming under Windows can be a real pain in the pooper.
User avatar #10 to #9 - stuartbewbzz (05/05/2013) [-]
I find programming a lot easier on a Mac for some reason. I think it's just the user interface and how smooth everything runs.

That statement is obviously correct. With the Mac being based on BSD, you have basically all the advantages of Linux, but at the same time, you get a much more streamlined development workflow with XCode.

Warning: Below is a statement that supports Macs. If you don't want to have an intelligent conversation about them and instead think "lol macs suk", thumb me down now.

Most of what you say isn't correct. Programming is really easy on Macs; in fact, I have a bot capable of editing hundreds of webpages in mere minutes running on one. The fact that it's based on Unix makes it much, much more useful to system DJ 4DM1Nistrators than Windows, because they are very similar internally. You can customize the UI to a small degree without downloading modification programs, but if you mean hardware changes, you can buy just about any hard drive for it, which is pretty much the same extent that you can modify a laptop. Depending on the model, it can be difficult, but this is true for all laptops. I have a program that can overclock my video card; it's currently at a 30% OC. Most laptops won't let you do that.

Other than a more intuitive user experience (according to most but not all people), you also get a much more stable OS, fewer viruses (at least in part due to its structure), software guaranteed to work well on your hardware, and generally higher-quality hardware. I have an 8-year old Mac laptop that works perfectly. In that same period, we've burned through nearly half a dozen other store-bought computers. Despite it's very old hardware, thanks to its efficient OS, it's still entirely usable.

Gaming isn't nearly as good on Macs, unless you dual-boot Windows. That is a downside.

They are good looking laptops, but boy are they expensive. However, you get much more life out of them, so annually the costs are similar to getting a Windows laptop. I got mine as a hand-me-down. If you're willing to spend a large chunk of change on getting a new computer, your best two options are a Mac or building your own desktop. I spent my money on the latter, and have no regrets, but all things considered, Macs are a viable choice.

In reply to those people below me who are saying that Macs get no viruses and Windows gets all of them, first of all, Macs do get a few viruses, but they are too proud to admit it, and sceondly you only get viruses on a Windows computer if you have a ****** antivirus and are either a ******* indiot or if you let your mother use the computer.

Correct, except Apple seem to actively suppress anyone talking about viruses on Mac to perpetuate the lie that Mac can't get viruses and it's obviously working considering how many retards still think Macs are virus free. Le ignorant part is that it's comparing the Positives of 1 category, with the Negatives of another.
It's informed, but it's biased as **** .

Let me have a go. Salad vs Pizza:
-Salad takes long to go to the shop, stay in line and buy it, come back and wash it clean, chop it, mix it and after all this entire process you can finally start eating.
-Pizza you can just order it with any flavours you want it and have it by your doorstep in 30minutes of less. And remember kids, Pizza is a vegetable, Government approved.

Have I just demonstrated that one is better than the other one? It was persuasive. Should we all stay in and eat Pizza 24/7 and become Ultimate NeckBeard Mode? **** no. What have we learned?
Everything has it's Pros & Cons. Don't be the smart-ass asshole who goes around preaching his biased ******** and also don't be the dim-whit who buys into the **** the asshole put out. Educate yourself and go buy the best product which suits your needs & financial situation.

I brought mine refurbished on eBay. Saved £400-500.
And unlike most laptops, macbooks have very good resell value, I could sell this for more than I paid for it currently and I brought it a year ago. (Though I'd still lose money due to eBay taking a cut, but I think from time to time they do a free listing weekend)

There are several reasons to justify buyign a MacBook over a windows laptop (imo) but less to justify buying an iMac over a windows based desktop. If money is a big factor then yes it's probably best to go for a windows laptop and get more bang for your buck, but there are several things MacBooks have that I don't see on windows laptops.
-Battery indicator without turning laptop on
-Very high res screen (honestly can't believe they still manufactur some laptops at 1366x768)
-Multi-gesture track pad (high quality, large, gestures work brilliant) I've heard some more laptops are offering this but I don;t know how they stack up next to Apple
-Xcode (as far as I know theres still no way to run this in windows outside of a virtual environment which is a ball-ache)

If I went for a new laptop now though I think I'd go for a touch screen Win 8 laptop, interesting to see where products like the MS Surface will go.

I live in Helena Montana. So I don't do much when it comes to swat, its fun to talk about though. I just hate 9mm is all, my side weapon is a M1911 which is a 45. ACP

If you're in Helena, that must mean that you have Greeks always coming to fight you. But, I guess it can't really be busy behind those Trojan walls.
I never qualed with a pistol, since I didn't have an important billet. If there's any weapon I'd rather have at my side, though, it's the M4. Looks like a toy, murders like the bubonic plague.
User avatar #97 to #94 - jackthefurfag (05/06/2013) [-]
I wish I could get my hands on a M4. But according to the chief out here "You don't need that big of a gun, our MP5s are good enough. Blah blah blah!" Only six out of ten guys on our team have M4s and I pulled a short straw.

I'm trying to reenlist as an 0311. I'm going to be a corporal in SOI with a bunch of privates and pfcs, so I'm going to make sure that I get my hands on the M19 and M32 more than anyone, especially in the fleet.

Honestly though, its better if we don't actually use our weapons.
They teach you that a arrest is better than a body bag, less paper work that way...
User avatar #102 to #101 - dashgamer (05/06/2013) [-]
Well, in the only arrest I was around, this insurgent was handed over to the ANA and had his face beat in before he even got a chance to talk. The ANA guys kept on motioning to the Marines to join them, but they were filming, and what with the SS ******** , the accidental burning of Qurans, the Army guy's massacre, they knew that would be a terrible idea.
#104 to #102 - jackthefurfag (05/06/2013) [-]
Yeah those jambos are pretty brutal. Can't say I blame them though those insurgents are sick ***** . Back on the topic of weapons...
This may be because I'm a sadistic **** , but launching tear gas at people is fun...

Getting sprayed in the face with CS gas is even more fun.

I wouldn't suggest it...
But I can picture the court room.
Judge: We have it on fair authority you tried to rape this woman. What say you in your defense?
You: I wanted to see what it was like to be tazed.

"I kept on telling the cop 'Come on, taze me, bro!' but he wouldn't do it, so I forced him to take action. Your police officers' lack of initiative is utterly shameful. I have rights as a citizen to be tazed, but the only way your officers will assist me is if I violate the rights of others! So who is to blame here, ladies and gentlemen?"

CS,pepper spray, mace. tazed. shot with rubber bullets (not part of the training the guy with the dick helmet shot me because he is an asshole. (I totally didn't owe him $30 or nothing))
We have to be sprayed with all our riot deterrents. for some dumb reason. (We also call being tazed thunder raped.)

WARNING: The following message is a rant of my own opinion. Don't blindfold me, line me up against a wall and shoot me.

I don't mind people that use Macs or the Macs themselves (I can't get used to them seen as though my PC settings are customized to hell and back) but what pisses me off are the twelve year old swag fags who brag about their Macs and when someone asks what they use the £1200+ computer for, they reply with something along the lines of Angry Birds for ***** sake.
TL;DR? Use a Mac if you want but for ***** sake have a good reason for it and not because they're ******* shiny. I'mdonenow...
User avatar #178 to #151 - ruebezahl (05/06/2013) [-]
It's usually the twelve-year-olds who brag about their PCs and who go on about how ****** Macs are and how you can't play games with them, etc.
#185 to #178 - Rascal (05/06/2013) [-]
pfft that's the 13 year olds
User avatar #187 to #185 - ruebezahl (05/06/2013) [-]
And the 14 year olds then brag about their bitchin' Ubuntu setup?
User avatar #227 to #178 - oking (05/07/2013) [-]
Fair point. Every fan base has their ********* I guess.
User avatar #158 - xast (05/06/2013) [-]

Some ******* on here think that Macs can't be used to program. What the hell is wrong with you? Any PC can program, and Macs are actually better at it than PC's.

PC's are still far superior though.
User avatar #95 to #53 - joshlol (05/06/2013) [-]
Mac has the advantage for having xcode, but when programming on my macbook the lack of a delete key is honestly irritating. (No idea whether the full mac keyboard has one or not but would like to see one in future macbooks)
#106 to #95 - Rascal (05/06/2013) [-]
you sure? I'm using a Mac... looking at my delete key right now
#186 to #106 - joshlol (05/06/2013) [-]
My MacBook has no delete key, don't know about the full keyboard. Which do you have, laptop or full?

pic is ****** quality but have a look and reassure me that I'm not going mad.
User avatar #110 to #53 - enorus (05/06/2013) [-]
How is Mac objectively "better" than PC for programming?
User avatar #133 to #110 - awesomenessdefined (05/06/2013) [-]
Applescript and Xcode come pre-installed, plus it gives you a different kind of access to the Unix thing-a-ma-bobs.

Even less game than macs....

At least I still have porn...
