Robb and Ned were my favorite characters, Someone please do something to ameliorate the pain and anger I feel because of this series. I've read all 5 books, too; it never becomes less heartbreaking.

I have this sick fantasy in my head that Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys will meet and get married and have half midget-sexy babies and rule forever as Queen and imp-king. I know it's not going to happen, but goddammit, my mind has no limits.

They are two of the most capable and trustworthy leaders out there. Their moral compasses are aligned properly unlike most people on GoT.

Don't forget the classic:
Sunset found her squatting in the grass, groaning. Every stool was looser than the one before, and smelled fouler. By the time the moon came up she was ******** brown water. The more she drank, the more she shat, but the more she shat, the thirstier she grew, and her thirst sent her crawling to the stream to suck up more water.

yes. it's quite a compelling story. george r.r. martin breaks the mold for fantasy writing and does away with a lot of cliches.

It's got a slowly progressing story line at first but it really picks up by the end of the first season. It also is a Show for S&M fans with things going from not good, to bad, to worse, to oh dear God in Heaven why am i watching this show.

So I had this thought the other day, and this seems as good a place as any to leave it...

Why would anybody in Game of Thrones think that there was nothing really dangerous beyond the wall (I can't remember if they do in the books, but I just rewatched the early episodes and that view was expressed).

Like... who builds 700 foot wall to keep out wildlings?
User avatar #2 to #1 - EdwardNigma ONLINE (05/04/2014) [-]
Oh ho ho ho ho, you need to watch the rest of the series.
Beyond the wall is not just wildlings, it was not built for that. The Wall was built to keep out something much worse from ever returning.
User avatar #27 to #1 - Furubatsu (05/04/2014) [-]
Ask the Romans who build Hadrian's Wall
User avatar #28 to #27 - beren (05/04/2014) [-]
Pretty sure Hadrian's wall wasn't 700 feet high.
User avatar #29 to #28 - Furubatsu (05/04/2014) [-]
East of the River Irthing, the wall was made from squared stone and measured 3 metres (9.8 feet) wide and 5 to 6 metres (16 to 20 feet) high, while west of the river the wall was made from turf and measured 6 metres (20 feet) wide and 3.5 metres (11 feet) high. This does not include the wall's ditches, berms and forts. The central section measured eight Roman feet wide (7.8 ft or 2.4 m) on a 3 m (10 ft) base. Some parts of this section of the wall survive to a height of 3 m (10 ft).

Still pretty impressive for then
User avatar #31 to #29 - beren (05/04/2014) [-]
I don't disagree. I'm just saying that this is completely not the point I was trying to make. Hadrian's wall is both impressive and neat.
User avatar #32 to #31 - Furubatsu (05/04/2014) [-]
Any my point is The Wall can draw parallels to Hadrian's wall in that it was a high and impressive structure in it's day used to keep out "wildlings" from the north
User avatar #33 to #32 - beren (05/04/2014) [-]
I know, man. But you're kind of proving the significance of my point. There is nothing unreasonable about thinking, "Oh, a normal-large wall. Must be some typical human-like enemies out there." But its stupid to look at a wall that is SEVEN. HUNDRED. feet high and not think that there isn't some good reason (i.e., beyond wildlings) that it's so large.
User avatar #80 to #33 - nywrestler (05/05/2014) [-]
They all believe that the Whitewalkers used to exist. They think they died out. The wall is still there because no one wanted to take down a 700 foot wall because it would be a lot of work.
#44 to #1 - Rascal (05/04/2014) [-]
I think there's also an element of people knowing what the Wall is built for, but they believe all the 'fairy tale' monsters are gone. dragons died out over 100 years ago, why not white walkers, mammoths, giants and bald folk?
User avatar #60 to #1 - specialone (05/05/2014) [-]
They know it was originally built to keep out the Others and the White Walkers, but pretty much everyone south of the Wall believes they're dead and now wildling raiders are the only threats to the realm - other than self-styled Kings Beyond the Wall, such as Mance Rayder.
User avatar #130 to #1 - anonymoose (05/05/2014) [-]
The people of Westeros believe magic has almost died. There have been no dragons, no proper magic, no grumpkins and snarks for thousands of years so they probably just assume there was a threat but they died and all the Nights Watch are doing is pretending there is a threat so they can get more men.
User avatar #18 to #1 - gibssowas (05/04/2014) [-]
Thats what I asked myself too for a long time.
I guess you could call it human nature.
There was no trace for anything else behind the wall then wildlings for, I don't know how much time maybe 1000 years?.
And that is the reason why no one really belives that there is something worse behind the wall.
If we don't see it with our own eyes most of us won't believe **** someone says.

User avatar #3 to #1 - EdwardNigma ONLINE (05/04/2014) [-]
I think I am reading this wrong actually, sorry.
User avatar #4 to #3 - EdwardNigma ONLINE (05/04/2014) [-]
To answer your question now that I actually figured it out, no one believes in the Others anymore.
History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years the ring passed out of all knowledge.
User avatar #5 to #3 - beren (05/04/2014) [-]
Yeah.. I know they exist. I've read all the books. Just talking about the fact that some of them don't consider a massive ******* wall to be an indicator of a serious threat.

I know some do and just don't think they can do anything about it or are too busy in Westerosi politics to care, but the fact that anybody could say that nothing exists beyond the wall but wildlings is just silly.

I'm going to post this because it's something that everyone that read the books seems to forget
This is a spoiler but not really I ******* hope you die worthy though

The white walkers aren't trying to invade/kill everything. They're on the run. They are scared of something that's in the north.
User avatar #79 to #48 - xsnowbanex (05/05/2014) [-]
what in the bloody **** are you talking about. Tell me where this is stated in the book, because I may have overlooked it. But that are you talking about
User avatar #81 to #79 - mortolife (05/05/2014) [-]
I think he got the wildlings and the others confused. The wildlings aren't trying to invade to kill everyone, they're running from the others.
User avatar #136 to #81 - xsnowbanex (05/05/2014) [-]
that makes a lot more sense

Yea I was like "the **** is more scary than the white walkers to have them running...? Dragons that multiply when they eat living humans?".
