White tigers are not a species of tiger, nor are they more endangered than any other tiger.
They are simply the result of generations of incest between Bengal tigers(normally between father and daughter) which helps bring out a recessive gene.

This is why we see retarded white tigers.

It's quite sad really, did you know 80% of white tiger cubs die shortly after birth due to defects? Or the zoo just destroys them because they're not suitable to be shown to the public due to their appearance. And the reason they're so easy to train is because they're so dependant on their trainers to survive (they're not very clever). Also, every single one is cross-eyed even if they don't look it. It's because the gene which causes the white coat, also causes the optic nerve to be wired to the wrong side of the brain. Many have defective organs and spines too.

Well, **** . White Tiger was my 7th grade section's mascot.

The saddest part is, there is no reason for the white tiger to be bred apart from for profit. They don't contribute anything to the gene pool because of their defective genes. If any zoo tries to claim they are protecting an endangered species, they're lying. People like the look of white tigers and the zoos know this. They all want maximum profit for their zoo so white tigers are in high demand. A white cub can be worth up to $60,000 whilst a regular tiger cub is worth around $15,000.
It's similar with white lions, however these can actually be found outside captivity and they are less prone to defects.

White tigers are bred via genetic mutation caused by incest.
#9 to #4 - teseus (12/30/2012) [-]
Not incest. They are white because of a recessive gene. Incest has a very large probability to put two of these recessive genes together fact that makes them have a phenotypical manifestation. Yet a white tiger can be obtained by breeding two normal (Bengal tigers) if they both have that recessive gene. Even so, the chances to breed a white tiger are only 25%. You can increase the chances to 50% if you breed a white tiger with a heterzygote genotype, yet it's kinda hard to determine exactly if an individual has a certain recessive gene and if that gene is missing (the individual has a dominant gene), that generation is gonna give you 100% Bengal tigers, yet every single one of them is gonna have one dominant and one recessive gene.

Hey anon is helping you, incest doesnt cause mutations. Muations are caused by mutagenes(like viruses, radicals etc.) and radiation. Incest like teseus said makes the bigger chance to get genes in hozygous genotype( it means that individual has a pair of same genes in homologous chromosomes), no matter wheter its recesive or dominant. Thats how the breeding works.

While that is true, in the industry, they are specifically bred via incest to increase the probability.
