In Britain Cancer treatments do just pay for themselves. Free health care for the win!
#36 to #8 - nasesse (07/12/2013) [-]
Yay for Britain, meanwhile the NHS has less funding than David Camerons dildo fund, and is being sold off to private sector. Same goes for our public transport. And what is concerning everyone right now. If Andy Murray is Scottish or English.
User avatar #50 to #36 - fukkendragonite (07/12/2013) [-]
none of that drivel is true.

NHS is not being sold off
NHS still has a large amount of funding
Murray is Scottish, there's no doubting that. He's British and I'm happy he won, but nobody says he's English you thick twat.
User avatar #59 - Loppytaffy (07/12/2013) [-]
Britain have this thing called NHS, where we don't let poor people die.

I'm sorry but I've completely missed your point.

Explain it to me as if I'm the sort of person who posts WWII dinosaur gifs.
User avatar #94 to #93 - heartlessrobot (07/12/2013) [-]
People want money. If you are dying, you need treatment. If you absolutely need something, you'll pay for it. It's good business sense to charge people money for healthcare.
User avatar #95 to #94 - thegamegestapo (07/12/2013) [-]
Which kind of sucks if you haven't got any money
User avatar #96 to #95 - heartlessrobot (07/12/2013) [-]
Ah, now, see, that's where the law comes in. If someone shows up to a hospital dying, the hospital is not allowed to refuse them service. They'll save their life and possibly charge them later. Whether or not they can pay at that point is irrelevant to the person no longer dying. If they CAN pay they do, if they can't the hospital usually doesn't charge them.
User avatar #98 to #96 - thegamegestapo (07/12/2013) [-]
I'm not entirely certain that's accurate although I can't provide proof of that so I won't attempt to argue it.

However it does mean people with serious medical conditions or injuries (broken limbs and whatnot) will not visit hospital because they can't afford the treatment. I've heard stories about patients with diseases that are fatal when they go untreated choosing to refuse treatment because they don't want their families to be put in debt.
User avatar #100 to #98 - heartlessrobot (07/12/2013) [-]
Right. The hospitals can charge the families if the patient cannot afford treatment.
User avatar #103 to #100 - thegamegestapo (07/12/2013) [-]
Which sucks if they can't afford it either. Like when whole families lose their jobs because the local factory has been shut down as a result of a banking crisis. Then you've got people who struggle to make ends meat as it is having to decide whether to buy medicare for their sick mother or food for their children.
User avatar #107 to #103 - heartlessrobot (07/12/2013) [-]
I said CAN. Hospitals typically avoid bankrupting people like that.
User avatar #108 to #107 - thegamegestapo (07/12/2013) [-]
In which case you're back to the patient just not getting treated. Hospitals aren't allowed to just treat people for free. The bills for the homeless and some other groups it shelled out by charities.
User avatar #109 to #108 - heartlessrobot (07/12/2013) [-]
Actually, by law hospitals aren't allowed to refuse to save someone's life.
User avatar #111 to #109 - thegamegestapo (07/12/2013) [-]
Yes, in the case of a resuscitation of an unconscious person then presumed consent laws apply and the hospital's insurance would cover the costs. That doesn't help the people who's hearts are still beating. If someone turns up at hospital with a broken arm or a dangerous, but not immediately life threatening condition, like cancer for instance, then there is nothing the doctors can really do.

With the NHS you turn up, you wait in line and, if there is something wrong, you get treated. I'll be the first to admit that the quality of care isn't always as good as a private clinic but it's good enough for me.

No, it's paid for through taxes, but erryone in the country gets it. So if you don't pay taxes like me (student living at home) you still get the same treatment.
