Your dog pooped everywhere so you had to put them to sleep? Do you mean like had diarrhea for so many days and wasted away?

I remember when I was there when we put down my dog Chase. He and I were almost the same age and I grew up with that dog. I just had to stand there and watch him get his shot, just horrified at that moment, knowing that this was it. Though, I found solace that his pain was over.

I don't believe in any sort of afterlife, but I like to think he's alive in the sense that he occupies my memories. And I suppose I can close that wound feeling that it's good enough.

Didn't mean to force my story, I just felt like sharing an experience would help
User avatar #76 to #41 - zafara (10/14/2013) [-]
It's better that you were there. The vets all talk about how the dogs somehow know that they are going to die when the final needle is put in and are drifting off. They talk about how the dogs look around frantically for their owners and don't go as peacefully as when the owners are there with them.

And it really was time for Scooter. She could barely stand or walk, especially on her back legs. She kept drinking tons of water and then barfing it back up, and wasn't eating anything. Scooter could barely sit up and didn't have any strength. Towards the end she was comatose and not really there.

My dog died at 5 years old after something went through her paw, it got infected and she died 4 days later.

No warning, from one week to the next she was just gone.

I know these feels

But to avoid more feels here's a picture of our new puppy we got a few months later...

We aren't planning to get a new dog. The next dog we will have will be the one I get myself. Sadly, my aunt and uncle's dog died just under two months ago as well. Mom is surprised that my uncle hasn't gotten another dog so far, as he's never gone a month without a dog.

I had my dog for 12 years and he had to be put to sleep, but for some reason it didn't hit me that hard he had different conditions which made it really hard to walk for him and he was really strong the vet didn't understand why he was still so energetic but he deserves his rest and I'm okay with it.
User avatar #72 to #55 - zafara (10/14/2013) [-]
Yeah, for some reason I don't feel much about it. It may be because it hasn't really sunk in yet or because I'm away at college so it may be easier.

Had to get my dog put down last october, saddest thing I've ever had to do.

Nah, I had a dalmation, lived til he was 15 so that's pretty good.
He couldn't walk properly or hold down food, it crushed me
User avatar #80 to #79 - zafara (10/14/2013) [-]
Yeah, Scooter never really liked to eat, we had to force her. And since she was diabetic, she had to eat to get her shots. The past few days she hadn't been able to eat at all, and couldn't even handle water. She had arthritis in her hips and knees too, but she had pills so it really wasn't a problem. But the other day her gait has shaky and she was kind of hopping with her hind legs. And when she wasn't walking (she was very restless) her legs wouldn't stop shaking.

No one is ever really ready. I'd just been preparing myself for years that this was going to happen eventually. It's why I never really make connections with anyone besides my parents and Scooter.

I mean, Scooter had been sick for a while. She had Diabetes for years (hereditary for west highland White Terriers), Cushings Disease (common in white dogs), arthritis, incontinence, and really refused to eat a lot for years. We managed to get the one dog that hated to eat. This summer we found out she had cancerous tumors growing on her rear. We had them removed but they found some growing in her liver. She was 14 years old, so we weren't going to have invasive surgery.

She recently had a seizure, and never really recovered. Scooter was a really sweet dog. She was quiet and would let anyone do anything to her. My mom and her friends would carry her around and hold her like a baby and she wouldn't move. Scooter was also kind of a mutant westie though; she had soft fur, her tail was broken, and her ears were too big. We bought her from a breeder for $200 because of these deformities. Although recently we've heard that it may have actually been a puppy mill, which would explain the broken tail, diabetes, and worms (she had worms when we first bought her).
User avatar #12 to #11 - secretmouse (10/14/2013) [-]
Oh dear... The poor baby! At least she was lucky enough to find a loving home with you.

She was quite a cute little thing!
#13 to #12 - zafara (10/14/2013) [-]
I mean, my mom would hold her like this for hours and she would just stay like that. We always wondered what happened to her brother.
User avatar #15 to #14 - zafara (10/14/2013) [-]
Yeah, she really liked to cuddle. She didn't like to walk much if mom wasn't there though.

I wish that I could say something that would make you feel better, I really do.

All I can say, is that I know how hard it is to make that decision, and to follow through with it. It's heartbreaking.

Unlike some people who would have just let her suffer, you did the right thing and ended her suffering.
And while that is painful, at least you did what was right and that's a huge thing.

Well, we had a neighbor who talked about how they kept their dog alive for too long for selfish reasons. And the vet and the specialty vet gave us pamphlets on how to know when it's time and how to say goodbye. Scooter had lost about 5 lbs during the summer and was really thin. Plus when I last saw her (I'm away at college) her whole body was trembling from weakness and she kept throwing up. Odd thing is, our uncle's dog died just 2 months ago.

Besides, I'm kind of a pessimist who always prepares for the worst in everything, so I guess I was ready.
