Meet Bill. Bill is 18 years old and knows very little about computers in general. The most advanced thing Bill has done is downloading a Nintendo 64 emulator, and it was buggy as **** .
You are telling Bill to "just build a pc". Bill spends the next month trying to research components at a reasonable price and what it takes to build a PC. Bill doesn't have any family members or friends that know much about computers either. It takes Bill about a year on and off, as he also has a job, goes to school and wants to keep his social life intact, all while enjoying life. Bill now vaguely knows what all the different components are, and what specs mean. He's heard so much about how gaming PC's can be almost as cheap as a Wii U if you find the right components to build your own one, but he ultimately only comes to a final cost of 750 dollars. Bill is unpleased, but continues anyway, as he's already invested so much time and effort into this project.

Bill then spends the next few weeks building the computer and downloading everything he needs. Unfortunately, Bill was a bit cheated, as the components he bought weren't as great as he thought. In fact, his new tower isn't much better than his 8-year-old notebook. Bill can still do the usual things on his new PC, and game on mediocre settings, with no graphics mods. He doesn't even know how to properly download mods, and doesn't think it's worth learning.

For Bill, and most people who don't know much about computers, mods and so forth, "just building a pc" is simply nowhere near worth it. They're happy buying rather cheap pre-built laptops and buying cheap video game consoles, and saving a whole lot of time and effort for things that should be letting you escape from projects and work...not create more of them.

Skill in computers = very low
Researched and found all necessary components for 600
Bought from newegg black friday for 500ish
Using internet and general intelligence put it together. Isn't working. **** **** **** **** ****
well might as well test each component, turns out motherboard was grounded or some ****
re-put together, works
then came figuring out how to install an OS and useful drivers to get it off the ground
Week later I'm happy and bought Skyrim
Still don't know how to mod

Wait till you get into custom water-cooling, overclocking and modding, extreme sleeveing (every cable), extreme cable management etc. It gets SO FUN... And expensive.

I'm glad things worked out well for you.

Building a PC can't be that hard.
