John 3:16, Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15, etc.

This is going to sound dickish, but don't even get me started on how good Jews are supposed to treat nonbelievers.

unless you flat out don't care that you are alienating yourself by societal standards. I think at that point it doesn't matter if you are an Atheist. You are just an enormous douche bag regardless if those said actions follow the code of religion or not.

I've never read the bible all the way though, so I don't know about any but homophobic. I believe his point, in that respect is that it can increase the chances of homophobia. For example, you could state that a random Christian and and random Atheist just as likely to dislike gays for their own personal reasons, which puts them at even footing. However, the Christian may see something in the bible like "Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable." and decide that homosexuality is wrong and should be discouraged because of that. Because Atheists have no such holy book, they would have no change of aligning their views with it, making the statement "Christians can hate gays, but so can Atheists." seem a little unfair in that it avoids that detail.

He's saying that people shouldn't justify their closed-minded views with religion. In today's society, it's taboo criticize people on their views if they are justified by religion, so people that spout ignorance are sometimes untouched because of that.

Not saying all religious people are ignorant (there are many lovely people no matter if they are religious or not), just the people that use their religion to justify their ignorance suck.

When it comes to beliefs personally, I do believe there is a higher intelligence. From a logical standpoint though. Too many things are made too perfectly and there are just too many coincidences for everything to stem from random chance. Whether said intelligence exists as any given religion depicts him? Well, that's an entirely different question.
Any thoughts?
#60 to #53 - eiaisqzbsesb ONLINE (04/02/2013) [-]
Let me logic up this **** . Let me just start by saying I did not read the replies to this because... Tiered and **** .

Take the theory of an infinite number of universes, every one unique in some way, shape or from. Since every universe is entirely unique, it's guaranteed that every single religion is valid in their own universe. Weather one of those religions is valid in our universe or not, we can't know for certain as of now.
#56 to #53 - sloot (04/02/2013) [-]
I think people today are too literal. I am a humble person and will admit there is so much in the universe that we maybe only know .00001% of what is actually going on. I don't believe there is a "god" floating around in the heavens some where, but I do believe the bible could have some figurative meaning to it. Maybe"god" is a metaphor for some cell structure or unknown catalyst that put everything into motion. I too believe there is a "higher power" in a sense but I don't know nearly enough to begin to try and explain what it is. I personally think people today have taken too much of a literal meaning out of the bible and think they must follow it word for word. I like to read out of it and think deeply about my own conclusion of what I think they are trying to convey and create my own on interpretation of what it means.
User avatar #57 to #56 - secondlawprevails (04/02/2013) [-]
That and I believe there was a study that found a "god" part of the brain. There's small portion of the (I forget which lobe) that seems to have the sole purpose of having religious experiences. It was found to be active in religious people during prayer, and when stimulated, test subjects reported seeing figures and hearing voices, which some believed where angels. Is it possible, (to an extent) That either we evolved or were made to be religious?
#66 to #57 - sloot (04/02/2013) [-]
I don't know if we are meant to be religious, but it is proven that most people that are happy have a spiritual balance (not saying it has to be religion). I think it is human nature to want to believe in something bigger than ourselves. Spending your life searching for what spirituality means to yourself makes a lot more sense IMO than just saying there is nothing and I am content. Know one knows enough to make such a bold conclusion. That is why I will spend my life trying to make sense of the unknown. I personally believe if there is a "god" it wouldn't matter what religion you affiliate yourself with. I believe it would want us to strive to discover the meaning of existence/spirituality and live good morally sound lives. I think deep down people are born with a sense of morality. Personally I feel a tightening in my chest when something I am doing feels wrong. It just comes down to whether you choose to continue that action you know is wrong or try to abstain from it.
#71 to #66 - secondlawprevails (04/02/2013) [-]
I think it was Aristotle that said, if a man is just, and the gods are good, then surely they will reward him regardless of his belief, otherwise they are unjust and not fit for the worship of any.
(Also, I'm rather enjoying the logical/philosophical nature of this thread. Kudos for standing above the common over opinionated rabble.)
#75 to #71 - sloot (04/02/2013) [-]
I like that quote, it really is the truth. I agree, you rarely find someone on this site that is more interested in the logic behind things rather than affiliation/ bashing others for their beliefs. Maybe some day the world will be more open minded and interested in discovering what something truly means rather than proving why they think they are correct and why others are wrong
User avatar #78 to #75 - secondlawprevails (04/02/2013) [-]
Exactly. And personally, I enjoy the logic/discussion more than I even really care about who's wrong or right. As long as a person is logical in what they say or can explain why they say it, I'll stop and listen even if I completely disagree.
User avatar #109 to #53 - ninjaspartan (04/02/2013) [-]
I personally believe it is possible that within an infinite expansion of random development for there to exist a perfect coincidence in one singular point of that infinity; in fact I believe it is impossible for there not to exist at least one perfect coincidence within the entirety of ever expanding forever that is our universe. The big bang is, in theory, the only perfectly symmetrical explosion to have ever occurred in the history of time. If that occurrence is possible, then so is the possibility of us and other seemingly impossible existences throughout.
User avatar #111 to #109 - secondlawprevails (04/02/2013) [-]
You have a valid point that in infinite possibilities there is an inevitability of the improbable. And I respect that point. Perhaps I feel the way I do because of a primal need to believe in something that I just haven't evolved beyond, (see below) Perhaps I'm completely wrong. But just the way so many things that seem random up close line up so perfectly when observed from afar make me feel as if they were intelligently designed. For example, did you know rabbit populations, the arrangement of seeds on an sunflower and the progressive spiral radius of a nautilus shell all progress according to the Fibonacci sequence. Such mathematical perfections in nature to me indicate some form of analytical thought was applied to their design, almost as if they were the product of some grand engineer. Is there a chance I'm wrong as hell and and all this stuff was the product of chance? Completely. Carry on with your logically sound thoughts Ninjaspartan. I respect you, your thoughts, and your logic.
