They're not scary, just annoying and ugly.

Fun fact: There is a species of moth that vibrates its genitals to create ultrasound bursts in order to avoid bats.

I don't know about you, but shaking my balls at predators tends to discourage them...

Same here. I had a moth almost like that fly and crawl in my hair...Needless to say, No mercy was given.

ya know... I'm scared to death of spiders and can't stand most insects in general...

but moths don't bug me at all. They're clean, don't bite, don't try to eat your food or hide in cracks and crevices... i got over my fear of them by catching them Gandalf-style and releasing them outside, starting with small ones and working toward bigger ones...
#82 to #65 - orgeeswife (12/06/2013) [-]
I've loved insects my whole life, but I still can't bring myself to tolerate spiders. :c
A few years ago I got to the point of catching enormous bumblebees for fun, but the second I see a spider I have a mini heart attack and immediately make someone squish its little brains out.
I even had an "Eastern Toe Biter" (goo.gl/XoHPBl) as a pet once for a few days. I gave it minnows, which it proceeded to suck the guts out of.
But spiders.... **** that I'm out.

But I'm glad you conquered your fear of moths. They're like clumsy floppy butterflies anyway, so it breaks my heart to know so many people are scared of them. :c They're so pretty too!

There's some that think they're hummingbirds. goo.gl/GGhwoH
<--These pretty ones show up all around my house and they sometimes have hearts on their wings.
Hopefully you've had the opportunity to hold one of these bad boys. goo.gl/5eAniY They're awesome. They have an average wingspan of 4-5 inches.

TL;DR: I get overly excited about moths.

One summer my cat brought me a big caterpillar. It turned into a cocoon and a year later emerged as this moth. I felt strangely proud as I released it into the wild.

I raised two of these and they turned out like this goo.gl/sjpOiP

My 2nd grade class raised a caterpillar to a butterfly.
As soon as we released it outside, a bird swooped down and ate it.

Ahh nature...

Can someone explain to me why so many people are afraid of moths? They're pretty much nocturnal butterflies in fabulous fur coats.
#86 to #57 - thatdingo (12/06/2013) [-]
i'm not really afraid, just cautious. i'm like this with all flying insects basically because i know that at any moment they can fly right in my face and **** my **** up. It puts me on edge. Of course i don't really care about moths or even bees, but as soon as i see a wasp then **** my life
#61 to #57 - sorinshrouds (12/06/2013) [-]
Because they flap their wings, showing off their beauty and, like you said, fabulous coats right in our faces. Some see nature, i see a flying death machine warning me that it's about to rip my face off. I'll have the luxury if it kills me quickly. That's why i'm afraid of any thing that flies. May god have mercy on my soul for moths shall not.

Except the one pictured is obviously fake. It looks like it's made of wool.
Bigger pic: goo.gl/RDHijd

<-This is supposedly the real one, but apparently this is the only existing picture of it.

However, there is a very similar (and very real) one, the chinese silk worm moth (Bombyx Mori) seen here: goo.gl/PCTpmK

Sorry for the long comment, I like insects.

I think moths are ******* cute. In the summer, I used to leave my window open. They'd get attracted to the light from my computer, and come chill with me. Pic related. It's my mothbro.

I think fj has just proven the whole world has been brainwashed. Most people here probably grew up hating moths and thinking they are gross because others thought they were, now we look closer at them and they are cuter than butterflies (which are the real creatures to steer clear from). Our lives have been lied to.
