what's the point if you're not getting the satisfaction of knowing that the thing you're eating had to die for you to live?

but if we do this with all our meat sources, then we can act just like self-righteous vegans and they can't say anything about it cause it's not harming a living thing.

In my defence, that wasn't in our biology curriculum. There isn't one universal school system. You probably don't know **** about the Treaty of Waitangi but it doesn't mean you suck at history.

I am prepared to admit I was wrong though, but I was under the assumption that foetuses are the most common source of unchanged stem cells since that's when the human body's got to grow all them fancy organs. If this was correct I could assume that a foetus was the most likely source of almost-bacon.

Do you understand what the article is saying? It is grown from pig stemcells, these are basic cells with no determined genes or set organ to build. This means that the scientists can make them do what they please. So they are making them create "instant" bacon. It is real pig meat, just without having to kill a whole pig.
User avatar #42 to #41 - crazyeyedbioll (03/04/2013) [-]

But can it replicate the true flavor of meat? The delicious flavor of disappointment as a baby little piglet is born into the world most likely dreaming of endless possibilities (first possibility - rolling in mud. second possibility - eating said mud. Third possibility - eating and rolling in mud at the same time), and then have it's life cut in a brutal and heated house of slaughter.
The horror fills its eyes as it begins to realize its brethren being cut down to be made into delicious cuisine of many different meals.
Finally, the killing blow is delivered to the piggy itself, and the meat begins to process.

...
Bacon is delicious.

"Even science knows vegans are wrong"

Uhm... What headline did you just read? "A green alternative to slaughterhouse blarhblarhblarh". I'm a vegan, and you have absolutely no idea how much I want this to happen. It could mean the end to factory farming. This just proves how ignorant you all are. You think we don't want you to eat meat because we want to be annoying and make you all rage when all we really want is to stop unnecessary suffering. You'd probably be surprised to hear that PETA donated a million dollars to this project.

Now come with the red thumbs.
#26 to #6 - restfullwicked (03/03/2013) [-]
Finally a Vegan that isnt a daft ******* hippy. I dont need to go in to how animals eat other animals. Thankfully in England most of our farming is done on fair trade and with higher standards for livestock.
#130 to #26 - tyraxio (03/04/2013) [-]
Just because animals are treated better here in England does not mean they are treated acceptably. And also what do you mean? Although not daft I am certainly a hippie!
#132 to #130 - restfullwicked (03/04/2013) [-]
What i mean is most vegans think that killing an animal is murder, even though murder is defined as one human killing another. you are one of the first to admit that you dont eat meat because you disagree with the way animals are treated. while i dont share your view, i can respect it.
I will say that PETA is a waste of time. they are full of ******** and you would be better starting a campaign on your own than joining theirs.
Also Free range food while more expensive are normally not battery farmed or anything like that. you will need to shop around but it is possible to find farms that treat their livestock well
#133 to #132 - tyraxio (03/04/2013) [-]
I agree, PETA are some complete doucheheads, however, they are good (and bad, because of their deserved bad reputation) in the way they make veganism more popular in the mainstream.
#134 to #133 - restfullwicked (03/04/2013) [-]
They arnt dicks, they are just idiots. requesting the game super meat boy change its name was just down right retarded, and trying to ban pokemon for animal cruelty just shows that they have no idea what they are talking about. i would have had more respect for them if they even watched the show but they didnt. they are just ignorant and self important.
I dont respect any group that tells others how to live their lives. P.E.T.A. is like a cult and in the end they make all vegans come across as raving loonies
#135 to #134 - tyraxio (03/04/2013) [-]
I don't reallt give a **** about all their pop-culture "name changing" business. To me, it just seems like a waste of time. I'm talking about their animal shelters. They have animal shelters for abandoned dogs and cats etc. and instead of finding the majority of them homes, they put down an obnoxious number of healthy dogs and cats.
#136 to #135 - restfullwicked (03/04/2013) [-]

They put down animals harvested for meat as humanely as possible, humans are naturally omnivorous and I don't think an animal that is a predator will think twice about eating us... It's just how life works.

If you want to get technical... No. It won't taste the same. It all depends on what the pig ate for the taste to actually taste good.

Assuming that you know most of the energy we get can be traced back to plants.

User avatar #69 to #54 - Skrufymunky (03/04/2013) [-]
I think he's against eating meat because it's animals and he or she doesn't like the idea of killing an animal for sustenance. If it's through stem cells, the creature wouldn't have had to die and bacon can still be consumed.

I'm only ASSUMING that is what he or she is talking about.

You assume correctly.

I'm not sure I would want to have genetically modified meat going into my system.
User avatar #57 to #55 - faffer (03/04/2013) [-]
you literally eat genetically modified foods every day, this could be a huge step forward for people as a whole. i would rather eat some lab grown meat than kill pigs for it. i looooovvveeeeeee meat, but if animals didn't have to die so i could eat it, well why the **** not.
#59 to #57 - mytrakytra (03/04/2013) [-]
Yeah but plants have different cells than an animal does. If we eat modified plant cells it won't effect us as much as modified animal cells could. Besides what's wrong with killing animals for meat, it's the basic system of the food chain and what's been going on the last billion years or so.
User avatar #61 to #59 - faffer (03/04/2013) [-]
well, i never said that killing animals for food was all that bad, i mean, its never stopped me before. however if we didn't have to do that then i would be all for it. Also this is made from stem cells, meaning cells that don't have an assigned role yet (I.E. could be a tissue cell, or a nerve cell, or whatever). This means that its not necessarily modified, just grown in a different way. plants are genetically modified to resist things or grow faster or whatever, not made with stem cells.
User avatar #64 to #59 - helenwheels ONLINE (03/04/2013) [-]
Okay, explain the fundamental difference between plant cells and animal cells and then tell me why it's so much worse if you modify an animal than a plant.

Then except the fact that meat it modified too, even more so than plants are.
#65 to #64 - mytrakytra (03/04/2013) [-]
It's basically because we ourselves are made up of animal cells and not plant cells. Plant cells DNA is much different then an animal cell's DNA thus making mutations less able through the modification of plant cells being introduced to an animal cell environment.
#78 to #55 - neutrino (03/04/2013) [-]
Nobody ever said it was genetically modified. Think of a developing embryo. The process of growing is not genetic modification. Basically, when the development gets to a point where a cell exists that will eventually become the areas of muscle that will become bacon, we take the cell and let it grow bacon.

Without the rest of the pig to tell it to stop, it grows indefinitely. Infinite bacon, without any toxins aquired throughout the pig's life.

Hell, it probably tastes better than normal bacon (I can't even ******* imagine).
User avatar #103 to #78 - funnyjunkscreator (03/04/2013) [-]
That is literally genetically modifying the meat.
#79 to #78 - neutrino (03/04/2013) [-]
Of course, we don't actually get the cell out of a developing embryo. We have much more clever ways. But the idea is more or less equivalent.
