If ages 3-12 and 13-18 require the same amount of sleep, why didn't they just put 3-18?
User avatar #65 to #32 - cristianpopescu (03/10/2013) [-]
Maybe because they're two different strips of age. Like 3-12 is childhood and 13-18 represents teenagers.
I guess
User avatar #67 to #65 - ainsley (03/10/2013) [-]
Age groups*

And if that's so, they would've used names instead of numbers
Like instead of 19-55, it would be Adult
65+ would be Elderly
And 3-18 is adolescence either way. If they're going to split that up, they should have split ages 40-55 as middle age
User avatar #68 to #67 - ainsley (03/10/2013) [-]
Woops.
Should have split 19-39 and 40-55, that is

speaking of sloths, why were they not on the list for the animals? dont they sleep for a ******** of time?
User avatar #102 to #100 - ainsley (03/10/2013) [-]
14-18 hours.
Since it can vary by 4 hours, we can't really round up to 18, and whoever made this was obviously only including the top 3, so the sloth would be probably 4th on the list, thus not making it

well that was informative.....thanks!

People can sleep as little as giraffes as well. It's called the Everyman Sleep Schedule, or polyphasic sleep. I have actually tried it during a 4 month period where I was unemployed. The only reason I stopped was because of loneliness. Being awake 154 hours a week is lonely.

#111 to #110 - joshofsouls (03/10/2013) [-]
I kid you the **** not... I have dreamed about him.
A few years ago, when we got in a car crash, I kept having nightmares.
And one night, I had a dream, a nice one, with THAT man in it.

I want to type it all out, but I don't know if it'd be interesting enough.
I'm gonna do some more searching online for this guy.

4) Actually, this isn't true. It's not a direct dreaming of the face - it's a dream of the concept of that face. For instance, your mind will make caricatures, change features to make it fit their personality better, etc. While you cannot make an entire face from scratch, and the base is always derived from an already observed face, even people you know very well often have distorted faces in dreams to fit your mental concept of that person.

6) Actually, before black and white photographs (television was a huge catalyst to it though), most likely nobody dreamed in black and white other than colorblinds. It's when it was commonplace to see black and white representations of the world that the studies were run for the first time. Of course if you are exposed to black and white worlds often, your dreams (which is a side effect of memory management) would reach a memory of your experience with a black and white only world (from that day, or as a reference for memory relocation) and be influenced by it. Because one of the most drastic pieces of information in that dream is the distinct lack of color, the dream would often take that as a huge piece of it's existence. Before/after that though, the concept of a black and white world rarely touches our minds, and therefore has little to no influence on our dreams (beyond distant memory)

14) Actually, many blind people from things such as strokes and degeneration are not truly blind. It's simply that their brain has rewired itself in an improper manner that the consciousness cannot recognize the sense any longer. In a recent study, blind patients were exposed to images of facial expressions. The sub conscious mind was able to identify the emotion related and cause the subconscious recognition of that mood. For instance, when they saw someone smile, the subconscious instinct to initiate a smile made the muscles associated with smiling twitch a bit. When they saw fearful faces, the muscles associated with frowning kicked on.

8) is a prime example of the "barnum effect" where it "feels" like the personality that describes you is pretty damn accurate, but in reality is just completely general and fits just about everyone.

Finally, I'd like to point out that EVERYONE dreams, wether you remember it or not. Thing is, you only dream during REM-sleep, so if you happen to wake up while you're in deep sleep, you will probably report not having a dream at all.

Facts collected from "Psychology Fourth Edition" by G. Neil Martin, Neil R. Carlson and William Buskist, Chapter 9: Consciousness. My book as a student. I'm not saying that everything in this book is true, but I will say that it's much more credible than this.
