Okay okay, but still he didn't staple the water to a tree.
He stapled a plastic bag to a tree, with water in it.

Water = H2O
Ice = H2O
Water = ice in all scenarios

it's not in the same state.

so, although it's made of the same components it's not the same thing - just very close.

It may not be in the same state. But, on an atomic level, its the same thing.

god we're both taking the humor out of this.

sure, if you're defining it on the atomic level, then you're right.

but i think we have to assume here that it's not based solely on the atomic level. It's based on everything. And ice isn't the same as water in every which way.

Ice is water with the atoms vibrating very slowly.

_ top of ziploc bag_
That means you aren't stapling the water but instead the bag.
Nice try though.

if you have enough staples, and enough time, you can do it.

position each staple so that the tip pushes a bunch of water molecules into the tree. this is technically stapling it.

you just need to do it A LOT

Freeze the water and staple it like that. If all goes well, the ice won't break off from itself, and the staple will keep it tethered to the tree (until it melts off).

Some water would stay on the staple.
