I'm a 3D Artist, and i used "It's rendering" as an excuse all the time"

...and then they bought me a separate computer for rendering.
#4 to #3 - Rascal (01/02/2013) [-]
Which programs do you work with? I mostly use cinema4d and after effects.
User avatar #5 to #4 - trinal (01/02/2013) [-]
3DS Max, Photoshop, and Filter Forge Usually.
#18 to #5 - Rascal (01/03/2013) [-]
Sweet! I love 3ds, but I have a mac so I have to use c4d. Good to know someone else on here is into 3D art!

I'm rendering as we speak!
User avatar #20 to #16 - lexivex ONLINE (01/03/2013) [-]
Me too! What are you rendering?
User avatar #22 to #20 - millenia (01/03/2013) [-]
Normal and ambient occlusion maps for some .38 bullets

Freaking AO. Takes forever.

This is what I'm working on. I can't get the sun in the right spot for the sand to look good AND the scarf to be lit up well. Really annoying.
#27 to #24 - millenia (01/03/2013) [-]
Yeah, thankfully I only work with video game art so I don't have to take all too long rendering things - I can do most things in real time :D

Something I finished up recently.
User avatar #29 to #27 - lexivex ONLINE (01/03/2013) [-]
Oooh that looks nice! You wouldn't happen to have done anything I would've seen?
User avatar #31 to #29 - millenia (01/03/2013) [-]
Well if you've downloaded mods for GTA: San Andreas, Fallout 3/New Vegas or Counter-Strike, then maybe.

Also I made some stuff for FireFall which should be coming out sometime this year.
User avatar #34 to #31 - lexivex ONLINE (01/03/2013) [-]
Nice nice. What do you use?
User avatar #45 to #34 - millenia (01/03/2013) [-]
3ds max + Photoshop, good old combo.
User avatar #28 to #24 - theonetruegilda (01/03/2013) [-]
That looks really good, what program do you use for your stuff? I'm using blender because i want to get money for the things i make, but that looks like 3DS Max / Maya?

I used blender! Being a poor student, I don't have a whole lot of funds.

Thanks for the compliment! I really hope to do this for a living soon enough. Here's another thing I made
User avatar #52 to #35 - theonetruegilda (01/03/2013) [-]
teaach meeee
Also, sorry to say but dont listen to Heartofthedl, i did myself just the student version of maya, and 3ds max, but you cannot use what you make to sell, so unless your doing it because you wanna for fun, i would stick with blender.
User avatar #61 to #52 - HeartOfTheDL (01/03/2013) [-]
If you want to sell yeah don't go for maya. Student version is still a pretty good program to use none the less and it's also good to have working knowledge of the other 3d programs out there. If you are using it for educational purpose then maya is excellent if the uni/school supports it.
If you want to sell and don't have the money then blender is the program to go to. I know you aren't trying to insult or say it but if felt like you were saying I was out right wrong.
User avatar #67 to #61 - theonetruegilda (01/03/2013) [-]
Oh no, i didn't mean any offence, i could have said that better >.>
But yeah 99% of the things modelers do would be useless for maya and 3ds because they would be used in some sort of profet, being anything thing from a free to play game where you can buy items, to youtube with partnership.
User avatar #69 to #67 - HeartOfTheDL (01/03/2013) [-]
Yeah it could have been worded better but you are right.

I wished Autodesk had a better pricing for entry level professionals. 5 grand is a bit pricy for someone just starting up. Then again i guess they would think most of them would be joining a company that will help provide the program/ funds.

So far I've had no luck on job finding, which kind of sucks.
User avatar #79 to #69 - theonetruegilda (01/03/2013) [-]
I was going to go to school for modeling, but they want $53,000 not including anything (need your own room, food, travel)
User avatar #92 to #79 - HeartOfTheDL (01/03/2013) [-]
Mine was AUD30,000+ but it's government paid and I will have to pay back when I find a job. I think it's a small percentage of the pay I get so it shouldn't be too bad...then again find a job in Melbourne is pretty tough for a 3d modeller especially when I specialise in character modelling.
User avatar #53 to #52 - lexivex ONLINE (01/03/2013) [-]
For the time being at least. Hehe, I'd love to teach you but I have the foggiest on how to! The internet taught me for the most part. I had an idea of what I wanted to do, so I found the tutorials on how to do it.

Blender Cookie was a big help for me

Yeah, i did a basic logo for my gaming clan, but can't ever get good looking.....anything. Textures suck dick for me too..
#56 to #54 - lexivex ONLINE (01/03/2013) [-]
Textures suck. The internet is your friend though. Most of the things you see in my pictures were found on the internet, and modified.

This is my first picture that I was happy with.

You know what? Lemme link you to the first tutorial I followed on youtube.
It's a few hours long, and it REALLY helped me get started in the right path
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af6A1uvNhyM Hopefully that link will work

Maya/3dsmax is free for students if the uni/collage/school is supported by them. I would reccomend maya though there are people that prefer working in max plus max has a better uv map editor.

"it's rendering" I use it a lot, mostly because they see me playing on my phone or watching videos, I'm a graphic designer too so one that needs to be there is "I'm looking for something to inspire me"

i took this engineering and architecture class first semester, i didn't have a reason, me and my friends just screwed around everyday. during finals, we had 2 hours to put all our drawing into 1 mass drawing, and we finished a few days earlier, so the entire time we much played scrabble with a box of giant ass wooden letters that was sitting near us

Compiling even large applications only takes a matter of seconds. In fact, as a programmer, you're compiling applications all the time since you're always going to be adding and removing lines on the fly.

Op needs to get his facts right.

You've clearly never compiled a large application.

A massive modeling program, I assume? Those things can take absolutely forever.
