This is an American Caesar's Mushroom (or a close relative) you found a young one, that will soon grow into a regular looking mushroom. This is edible, and a close relative the Caesar's Mushroom (the European counterpart to this) was a prized food for the Roman armies. I would however not recommend eating any wild mushroom, but for this one you should be fairly safe if you did decide to.

The interesting thing about Cordyceps is that considering how cows gave us measles, chickens and pigs gave us the flu, and chimps gave us AIDS, would not mean it's a far-off assumption that the fungus can evolve and be capable of infecting humans, instead of just insects. And when that many people are prone to an airborne virus, all that would be left is... The Last of Us.

On the third one I misread it as, "This uncommon mushroom grows on dead dogs" and I was wondering why there were so many dead dogs just lying around. It made me sad thinking about it..
