It's called scaffolding, I broke one bone twice and shattered it inbetween, and the other one once. The surgeons words were (after a ct scan) "Your wrist is mashed". It's basically all they could do. What they didn't tell me was they unscrew the screws from your bone, while your awake, and they didn't give me pain relief at first...
User avatar #139 to #138 - brehon (05/27/2013) [-]
aw man, that sucks. thats all over and done with right, like, your bone healed?
#140 to #139 - ctenop (05/27/2013) [-]
Had that on for 6 weeks, then had to rework my wrist movement back with another temp cast with a metal plate (velco on). Then months of physio. I had another bike accident (douche did a U-turn without looking) and I crashed, meaning my thumb wasn't move able for days, still plays up and hurts. The wrist is visibly deformed, and I have some trouble with it, and pain, and the scars from the metal work are down to the bone, and have muscle attached, so it's odd to move my wrist etc, sometimes painful. Took this just now. You can feel the the scars and muscles and tendons if you put your finger on either under the wrist (as the tendon takes a new route) and near the scars, and you can feel the knobbly bone. On the plus side, I can make smiley faces with the 2 dots, and get chicks to hold my hands etc, and then they ask questions and it goes from there ;)

Well, i guess every cloud has its silver lining =P
Sounds like it was quite an ordeal, closest thing ive had to that kind of thing (not broken bones, but hospital stuff) was when i went in for stomach pains and found out i had two gallbladders
User avatar #142 to #141 - ctenop (05/27/2013) [-]
Had 3 operations "down below" (first one was a double twist, one had actually died and had to be heat packed), then the other 2 was when I ripped out the internal stitches holding my boys (yes, ouch), had a snapped tendon or 2, broken wrist, concussion and tissue and possible bone damage from second crash, and a 5 days stay from the first one as well. I'm a clumsy ************
User avatar #143 to #142 - brehon (05/27/2013) [-]
Im so glad ive managed to get through life without things like that happening to me
Hope your life gets a little bit easier, and a lot less painful.

I've never once broken a limb...
...what's that **** feel like? Other than ******* pain?
User avatar #42 to #38 - zombieginger (05/27/2013) [-]
Well, at first it's more terrifying because "oh holy **** , why does my leg/arm/whatever look wrong" and than you start freaking out, and the adrenaline kicks in. A few hours in it hurts to move, and you get terrified of moving it at all.
#44 to #38 - Shmooglavoue (05/27/2013) [-]
Like there is something very wrong with the broken limb (which there is). It is oddly misshapen, and trying to move it against the break will inflict a novel kind of pain, straight down to the bone, telling you to STOP.
User avatar #49 to #38 - grpeephole (05/27/2013) [-]
well for the collarbone..... so much ******* pain you cant take a step without moving it the wrong way *this is the day after the event*
User avatar #53 to #38 - lefthoofthepirate (05/27/2013) [-]
I broke my femur once.
it was horrible.
And painful.
User avatar #59 to #53 - certifiedidiot ONLINE (05/27/2013) [-]
That might be related to the fact it's the strongest bone in the entire body o.O
User avatar #125 to #59 - lefthoofthepirate (05/27/2013) [-]
True. I suppose falling out the back of a ute going at least 100KMPH was a bit stupid...
User avatar #74 to #38 - vatra (05/27/2013) [-]
It depends on what bone you break, wear you break it, how you break it, and the type of break. So really it is different for everyone.
#122 to #38 - Rascal (05/27/2013) [-]
I broke my wrist when I was seven. It's twelve years later and it makes a cracking sound every time I move my wrist. (I fell down on a hill on skates and my wrist went all the way back.)
#132 to #38 - Rascal (05/27/2013) [-]
It sounds like concrete being broken apart with prejudice, then kinda floppy and weak since your ligaments now hold the weight of the arm (if a clean break and not a fracture). Shock sets in for about a millisecond then the glory mother of all pain shoots to the break site several times a second, causing a grown man to cry.
#75 to #38 - achselschweiss (05/27/2013) [-]
So I've broken both wrists, couple of fingers, collarbone, both shins, and a thigh bone (all separate incidents). It never really hurts where the fracture happens, the feeling is just.. bizarre, strange.

The one that hurt the most for me was a tibia fracture down by the ankle, since I fell and hit my knee on a rock at the same time. The knee hurt so bad that I didn't realize my foot wasn't properly connected to my leg with bones anymore, so I stood up and tried to walk. This pushed the bone into some muscles and nerves, and gave the feeling of electric shock.
User avatar #118 to #38 - brisineo (05/27/2013) [-]
A broken bone isn't the worst pain you could feel. More or less, when the injury happens, there would be a sharp pain when it broke, but you'd also more likely be paying more attention to any other secondary injury you got from what you were doing while breaking the bone because initially that would hurt (and look) worse. (Such as the case when I broke my wrist crashing a scooter; the roadburn on my palms and back hurt FAR worse, and I actually thought that the other wrist was broken because it had the worst pain)

Unless the bone plays a main supporting role (like a femur or collarbone) or the fracture isn't too large, you may even go a while without knowing you even did break it until unusual sensitivity and pain in the area may get you to check it out.

However... If you want pain, then dislocations and connective tissue injury are the worst pain you could imagine. When I dislocated my kneecap, I could do nothing else but just scream.

i have no idea what else there is but a friend of mine in middle school slipped on the grass and landed on his arm in just the wrong way and it broke in 5 different places. he cried for 3 hours straight. needless to say, his forearm looked like one of these ~ so i like to think i understand what all the crying was about

After my 6th Break on my left arm its just numbness, you just sort of go "Jesus **** , it happened again."
Happened while Snowboarding the last time i Just sort of asked my friends to help me out of my board and hail a Patrol Skier down. You get used to it.

Also if you get surgery its kinda gay. pic related.

My sister broke her arm 2 days ago, didn't find out until yesterday and said apart from the fact she can't move her upper arm, it doesn't actually hurt.

Broke my foot, arm, thumb and finger and never ever saw the X-ray but when i broke my left clavicle, they had to show it too me (clavicle fractures usually isn't the nicest thing to look at when you're almost passing out).
