I believe it is 97 percent air, not 99.

silicon dioxide is glass, isn't it?
User avatar #120 - jandude (08/10/2013) [-]
i thought silicon dioxide was sand...
User avatar #122 to #120 - victoronefourtwo (08/10/2013) [-]
It's one of the most common components of sand. It's not always sand of course. For example, it could be a boulder of silicon dioxide, which wouldn't be sand.

Is it possible to obtain this?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel

You can buy it as insulation.

They should really make clothes out of this. You could walk around feeling ***** without the awkward stares and arrest that comes with actually being nude in public.

or you could man up

User avatar #112 to #110 - mydogizmexican (08/10/2013) [-]
Very durable, and i've actually never seen a picture of it this bark (its usually a baby blue color)
User avatar #130 to #112 - anonymoose (08/10/2013) [-]
The "solid smoke" you've probably seen is a different kind of Aerogel.
User avatar #137 to #130 - mydogizmexican (08/10/2013) [-]
It was actual aerogel, there is a website down below with aerogel types
User avatar #114 to #112 - BubsyB (08/10/2013) [-]
ahk, yeah I didn't think this was it as this looks just like Charcoal. and this doesn't look like it's mostly air haha.

I bet it's really soft...I want to put my dick in it.
Someone had to say it.
#98 to #92 - monkeyheadbsc (08/10/2013) [-]
No, you wouldn't. In order to be that light, it has to be mostly air (as the picture above states). So this material consists merely of a scaffold of silicone dioxide. It is a mesh of irregularly shaped, tiny rods, that tend to break after being exposed to to much pressure. So if someone were to put, let's say, a relatively hard, but on the surface uneven thing into it, like a penis, the structure of the material would break, millions of incredibly tiny spikes would break of and potentially get into your body, causing cancer.
Compare some of the newly found super-materials to asbestos. It's the same problem.

So even if you would somehow find that, I wouldn't recommend to use this as a really expensive fleshlight...

Welcome to the Internet where you get cancer for trying to **** something!
I agree with everything else you said tho ^.^

Fear not. If you put the cursor over the little blue eye, you'll see that I was only joking. But thanks anyway, for being the kind of person who would try to keep someone from pincushioning their dick with cancer spikes.

99% air is an understatement. It's 99% air on 3 different scales.

Why does it look burnt in that picture. This is what it normally looks like.
User avatar #101 to #76 - truemox (08/10/2013) [-]
The Burnt one is graphene aerogel. It replaced regular aerogel as the lightest substance.
User avatar #87 to #76 - lolkoi (08/10/2013) [-]
I think its because is has silicon dioxide in it. That is the original type of aerogel.
