The flower is not hard. Because there is nobody like you.

what if flowers are really hard they just soften up when you touch them.

This must be what they made Laputa out of
User avatar #125 to #26 - jamieswhiteshirt (08/10/2013) [-]
Technically, Laputa (from Gulliver's Travels) is a solid rock base with a city on it. It is able to fly because they carved out a mount for a large magnetic disk made of some kind of material which is repelled by minerals in the ground below.

That's your fave, i get it, it's a great movie, but i can't see it as my fave, i prefer princess mononoke, spirited away, and nausicaa. in that order, I also should put Grave of the fireflies in as well, now that is one of the best and saddest movies ever made, i don't get feels often, but when i think of that movie, it's like someone opened the floodgate.

Also it can be made transparent so it looks like solid smoke.
It is incredibly heat resistant you can blowtorch it on your palm without getting burned.

User avatar #77 to #28 - redrex (08/10/2013) [-]
it's not that it can be made transparent, it is transparent because it's almost all air, i think thr aerogel in the picture above is just burnt to **** or something
#108 to #28 - harleycurnow (08/10/2013) [-]
Translucent. Transparent is where you can see straight through it. Translucent is where some light gets through. It's half way between opaque and transparent.

Somebody should look into getting this stuff into clothing, if you can make it hydrophobic and heat resistant like this it would make excellent snow/lab wear.
User avatar #42 to #39 - dragontamers (08/10/2013) [-]
It's extraordinarily brittle.
User avatar #46 to #42 - theunlimited (08/10/2013) [-]
Ahh well that sucks, I thought given the "gel" it might be flexible and slightly rubbery.
#69 to #46 - llamadude (08/10/2013) [-]
That's what most people think but its actually just called gel not because it is like a gel, but it is made from a sol-gel process and supercritical drying of the sol-gel. Some aerogels can be rolled up and stuff, and they are pretty strong in that they can hold things that are way heavier than itself, but still, just rubbing it causes the surface to breakdown.
#70 to #39 - PadreRasta (08/10/2013) [-]
If i remind correctly, they projected this to study volcanos closer. They would make boots out of this, so they can walk on lava without this happen.
User avatar #66 to #39 - teevee (08/10/2013) [-]
www.buyaerogel.com/
They do have several hydrophobic versions for sale, and some that are WAY stronger than original aerogel, and much less brittle.

#98 to #92 - monkeyheadbsc (08/10/2013) [-]
No, you wouldn't. In order to be that light, it has to be mostly air (as the picture above states). So this material consists merely of a scaffold of silicone dioxide. It is a mesh of irregularly shaped, tiny rods, that tend to break after being exposed to to much pressure. So if someone were to put, let's say, a relatively hard, but on the surface uneven thing into it, like a penis, the structure of the material would break, millions of incredibly tiny spikes would break of and potentially get into your body, causing cancer.
Compare some of the newly found super-materials to asbestos. It's the same problem.

So even if you would somehow find that, I wouldn't recommend to use this as a really expensive fleshlight...
#100 to #98 - Rascal (08/10/2013) [-]
Fear not. If you put the cursor over the little blue eye, you'll see that I was only joking. But thanks anyway, for being the kind of person who would try to keep someone from pincushioning their dick with cancer spikes.

Welcome to the Internet where you get cancer for trying to **** something!
I agree with everything else you said tho ^.^

They should really make clothes out of this. You could walk around feeling naked without the awkward stares and arrest that comes with actually being nude in public.

User avatar #87 to #76 - lolkoi (08/10/2013) [-]
I think its because is has silicon dioxide in it. That is the original type of aerogel.
User avatar #101 to #76 - truemox (08/10/2013) [-]
The Burnt one is graphene aerogel. It replaced regular aerogel as the lightest substance.
User avatar #6 - teevee (08/09/2013) [-]

they have a new type of aerogel that's better for sound insulation, has more of a solid color, and is even more shock resistant than pervious versions of aerogel, witht he same weight/density.
