So we have a net change of .75 degrees Celsius over the last 120 years. What would be interesting is if we had this data for the past several thousand years, cause as is, this doesn't particularly scare me.

The earths overall temperature changes in cycles from warm to cold over thousands of years. Having a chart that goes back only 120 years is like flipping a coin twice to have it land on heads both times, the hypothesizing that it will ONLY land on heads.

This is a very small sample of time to say that the earth is heating up due to global warming though. While it is getting warmer in this short period.... I cant be arsed finishing this .......

now just zoom out a little bit so we can see more than a very small amount of time that is 130 years

There is a theory called the malankovitch theory which suggests that the earth goes through periods of time were we orbit slightly closer and further away from the sun which would explain why are climate is changing.

that theory has been disproven. http://muller.lbl.gov/papers/lbl-35665.html

The earths climate changes around every 600 years, going through ice age like cold sprees, and painfully hot warm sprees. In the dark ages they believed the wars and death were responsible for such high heats. In the early days of america, they couldn't explain why the rivers were freezing over.
So we aren't any fault in this, the earth does it on its own. It's a natural process.

temperature change does not prove global warming or the existence/effect of greenhouse gases. real scientists should be able to understand this.
#12 to #7 - mackigol (02/10/2013) [-]
The existence of greenhouse gases is not up for debate, nor is the result of the greenhouse effect (it's vital to life on Earth).

>Implying that we understand the earth's climate changes

We aren't even sure if temperature fluctuations are a normal thing, we haven't been able to measure them long enough

This is an example of how people can lie with statistics, if you look at the temperature scale between the low at 1910 and the high at 2010 the difference is only 1.25 degrees.

Oh no! The worlds average temperature has risen by 0.75 degrees over the past 130 years! We're all going to dieeeeeeeeeeeeee

I dont think there is any doubt that the earth is getting warmer. I don't want to be all right wing, but I agree to an extent that the Earth does go through major shifts in climate on a regular basis.

I don't remember the exact dates, but I do remember that the Earth apparently went through a mini ice-age in like the 1200's. (Not sure if thats the right century, I just know it was about that time) and I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with humans cosidering there was no industry back then.

The Earth has gotten a lot warmer in the last 100 years, and while im sure we have contributed to it I'm not entirely convinced its purely us, or that the Earth cant recover. The Earth is a pretty incredible system. It has had extreme colds and extreme heats before. I'm sure it can recover.

Regardless of if it is us to blame or not, I think a more important thing to focus on is a solution. The fact that the climate is changing has been well established for a while now. There's a lot of debate as to who is responsible, but I think a more important discussion is how to go about fixing it. As of right now, even if it was proven we contribute 100% to climate change, there is nothing we can do about it. Regardless of the source we need to find the solution. Be that reduced emissions or some larger project to reduce greenhouse gasses without changing our industry.

TL;DR

I don't care who's fault it is so long as we work towards fixing it.

Keep in mind, who are right wing politicians trying to sell their views to?

Not the scientific community, but the bible belt. The bible belt typically doesn't like the idea of "curtailing their freedoms" because of something they don't understand so their politicians will pander to their ignorance in order to get additional terms in office. It's a pity really...

... so how the heck do they know the temperature anomaly in 1880? this is a legit question, I'm not speaking for or against the message.

Probably core samples from an area that doesn't see a whole lot of human interaction, like Antarctica or something. It's something to do with the content of minerals in the ground that can tell you I believe.
