People ask what the use of this is in science?

A friend of mine studies fluid dynamics at MIT as a student (I live in Massachusetts). She studies fluid dynamics in labs like this, and has explained to me that we really do not understand how airflow and water interact with their surroundings, and that our computer programs can only crudely model them.

So in other words, studying things like this will allow us to improve aerodynamics in vehicles, make energy production more efficient, and so on.

Just some food for thought. Interesting stuff.

What you said is true in general. But this experiment is really just a cool byproduct of Helmholt'z theorems regarding rotational flow in irrotational fluid.

A better understanding of fluid dynamics can lead to better efficiency in any system which relies on fluid motion through pipes or ducts to operate. The knowledge can also be used to design more accurate small scale experiments and models for design of buildings, cars, boats, planes, piping systems, etc.
