Because they look scary and some people are really stupid. I have a mini-14 "hunting" rifle that shoots 556 (same caliber as AR-15/M16) and I have 40 round mag, and apparently that's fine. But put a tactical stock on it and add a ******* flash hider and it's an "assault weapon". Really??? I'm surprised they don't call swords "assault knives", or rocks "assault pebbles". Just goes to show how dumb people can be. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be that ignorant.

I just got a mental image of an assault pebble in my head. Made me Lol.

An AR-15 uses a magazine, not a clip.

There is very little difference in the amount of bullets you can carry in a clip vs a magazine.
Same with 15 round magazines u can get a 10 round clip no problem.

For the reccord, I agree with you OP. Literally the only reason "assault weapons" have a bad rep is becuse they look like machine guns and have the option of large capacity clips.

I can see why people are scared of ARs. I mean, it does look powerful and scary when in reality it shoots a low caliber bullet. .223s are basically the 9mm of rifles. Plus, they do have large clips, and I can understand why people don't like that. But if you're shooting for just enjoyment or competition shooting, you want an AR so you can shoot as much as you want without worrying about melting the barrel.

Right, when in the hands of responsible people they're safe and practical. But they have the potential to do a lot of damage and some people think the solution is just to take them all away.

Imagine a crowded street. You could do FAR more damage with the average car than you ever could with 30 rounds from an AR-15.
User avatar #11 to #9 - cnyeguy (01/18/2013) [-]
on a crowded street you could run people over in lagre quantities if that was your intent. People who want to kill other people are going to do it by any means at their disposal. Banning a certain gun is going to do absolutely nothing to stop killings.

This is the only argument that pro-gun people use that I don't fully agree with. The whole "If someone wants to get a gun, they will." While that is true, you don't think like that in your daily life. For example, you wouldn't leave your front door unlocked because "If someone wants to break in, they're going to do it even if I have the door locked.
User avatar #12 to #11 - tittystargalactica (01/18/2013) [-]
Exactly. The ban is literally just going to limit responsible people from using firearms.

Don't get me wrong, I have only ever fired a weapon once with the army cadets (I live in GB) so I don't really have experience with this but I fully understand the ban that's proposed for you guys in the US. It's stupid and if I could help you oppose it then I would.

And that's the same as a baseball bat, for example. When in the right hands, it's used for sports. When not, it can also cause a lot of damage.
But the thing is, I think if you showed an anti-gun supporter an AR with only a five bullet clip and also showed them a typical .223 and asked which one is more dangerous, they'll say the AR even though they're the exact same gun with cosmetic differences.
User avatar #10 to #8 - cnyeguy (01/18/2013) [-]
I would have to agree with you on that.

On a side note, the AR-15 can be chambered for both the .223 and 5.56 NATO rounds
User avatar #28 to #22 - charagrin ONLINE (02/16/2013) [-]
True, but to make it clear for those who may not know, a 5.56 NATO rifle can safely fire .223 REM, but generally not the other way around due to the 5.56 having higher pressures and a longer lead. Not saying you CANT fire 5.56 from a .223, just that for some guns it may not be safe.
User avatar #32 to #28 - slenderwolf (02/16/2013) [-]
Yeah, the rifle will be stamped if it can hold up to the pressure of either rounds it will say something like 5.56 OR .223 or vice versa

Because this will calm the mob.
I ******* hate those animals.

They want to ban the AR-15 because it is popular and yes because it resembles many military grade weapons. The left side has been attempting to ban certain fire-arms for years and with these new shootings they can scare the soccer moms into thinking these are what soldiers are using to blast towlheads.
User avatar #23 - slenderwolf (02/12/2013) [-]
I like your post and all but a machine gun is not the same as a shoulder fired fully-automatic. By definition a machine gun takes a team of two or more people to operate.
#17 - punkrockdude (01/22/2013) [-]
No we want the AR-15 to be banned because it can be (and has been) very easily modified into an automatic rifle. If mental cases like the sandy hook shooter can get what they need and figure out how to do it, it just shows how easy it is. Also, the AR-15 is only part of it - the other part is the high cap magazines. Hi cap mags + automatic "assault type" rifle = mass killing. There is no other use
User avatar #3 - captainoptimist (01/18/2013) [-]
I think the AR-15 is used as the "example" gun because it is recognizable and people know what it is.

I would go so far as to say that most people who would ban the AR-15 would be in favor of a ban on all semi-automatic weapons, they just don't see the point in listing every single one of them in a comment thread.
#4 to #3 - theexecutionhd (01/18/2013) [-]
Majority of the time if you ask the average anti-gun person, they say they want to ban machine guns or assault weapons. People think the AR is a machine gun because that's how it's made out to be and it looks similar. Plus, the major argument is against them are "You don't need that to hunt." I just don't understand it.
But props to you for having a legitimate rebuttle without personal attacks.
