It has been determined that unless you are 5 feet from a zombie, shotguns are utterly useless against zombies, unless you have a 12g slug loaded rather than buck shot. a .22 or a .308 would be much more useful. You can also carry a ******** of .22 ammo with little to no effort.

While .22 is effective, a shotgun, at relatively close range, loaded with flechette shells (which are legal in some areas), has a wider area of effect and all you need is for one dart to hit the skull, as it would penetrate, with several fragments of bone, thus multiplying it's lethal potential. And since it fires multiple darts at once, multiple threats can be eliminated with a single shot. You have a valid point, but it's not really correct, not fully.

The **** man, are you retarded?. Im one of the best FITASC shooters ''claypigeon shooting'', in norway and wtf we shoot targets flying in the air 60-80 meters away with birdshots thats rough 229 feet. And normal targets at 65-114 feet
User avatar #8 to #6 - PurpleAtrocity (07/04/2012) [-]
Are you using a full choke? Because that's a huge factor on how accurate your gun is.
User avatar #13 to #8 - blexz (07/04/2012) [-]
when shooting targets that far im using 3/4 choke normal targets 65feet i shoot with 1/4 or 2/4 choke
User avatar #16 to #13 - PurpleAtrocity (07/05/2012) [-]
well okay. But a clay pigeon is not equal to a human skull, not at all. what you want when zombie killing is not just a headshot, but destruction of the brain, which shuts them down completely. so although you can shoot a clay pigeon from 60m with a shotgun, you can't kill a zombie from that far away. A rifle is more accurate, and the ammo is easier to carry, because it's more compact.

¨well if i was surviving a zombie apocolypse i would only use a shotgun if I ever got trapped in a hallway or something Ofc i'd use a automatic rifle of somekind
User avatar #22 to #19 - PurpleAtrocity (07/06/2012) [-]
You might want to go for something a little stealthier, assuming the zombies are capable of tracking a sound.
User avatar #23 to #22 - blexz (07/06/2012) [-]
I was gonna say a bow and an automatic rifle :P if you get lets say 30-40 zobies towards you i dont think the bow will do it unless you are legolas :P

you know nothing about guns. Maybe a little video game logic is all you're running on

Clearly the fact that I'm from a military, pro hunting family has left me with a huge knowledge deficit of firearms. Please, tell me more of your expertise on firearms.

Everything I know of guns was learned and researched by me on my own. I had nobody to teach me aside from 1 friends Dad who took me shooting sometimes. I learn about guns because of my love for them. I don't think I'm a bad ass when it comes to guns or a know it all, but I know a good bit and know y our comment was wrong.

I didn't say anything about the power of a shotgun being too low, or anything wrong, for that matter, but birdshot at most will crack the skull, and what you want when zombie killing is destruction of the brain, Not just a headshot, mentioned in a prior comment.
User avatar #3 to #1 - needsmohoes (07/03/2012) [-]
The effective range of a shotgun is well over 5 feet, and a head shot would be much easier to achieve given the radius of the pellets, but for longer distances a .22 would be ideal
User avatar #10 to #3 - PurpleAtrocity (07/04/2012) [-]
I'm glad that you feel that way, but although a head shot is what you want, you need to destroy the brain. just because a few bird pellets landed in the head does not ensure a destroyed brain.
User avatar #11 to #10 - needsmohoes (07/04/2012) [-]
If you're using bird shot I agree you won't get much penetration. But a 12 gauge packing a heavy load would crack a skull no problem
User avatar #14 to #11 - PurpleAtrocity (07/05/2012) [-]
See, I can see a 12g slug getting the job done, but then it's no better than a rifle.
User avatar #17 to #14 - needsmohoes (07/05/2012) [-]
That's true for sure, at that point you should just use a rifle. But for urban settings where you are facing numerous zombies at fairly close range the shotgun would be the most effective choice
User avatar #20 to #17 - PurpleAtrocity (07/06/2012) [-]
Like I've said before, that's the only situation I'd use a shotgun in
User avatar #2 to #1 - neonblackkitty (07/03/2012) [-]
maybe you should actually shoot a shotgun before you talk about how "ineffective" they are.
User avatar #7 to #2 - PurpleAtrocity (07/04/2012) [-]
Come at me bro, That's how I detress, I take my 20g out back and put off about 20 shells, and go clean my gun. The point of zombie killing is to destroy the brain, and if you're using birdshot, that's just not going to cut it, especially if your target is about 100 feet away. I'll stick to my 30-06 rifle for something like that, and use a shotgun only if I have to.
User avatar #18 to #7 - neonblackkitty (07/05/2012) [-]
birdshot is for BIRDS
I would recommend you use Federal LE0012FC but they don't make that in a ****** 20 gauge! lol get a real shotgun ;)
User avatar #21 to #18 - PurpleAtrocity (07/06/2012) [-]
That's my destress gun. I don't own a 12g because I only rifle hunt, with my 30-06 remington.
