I've once had a Browning BL-22 explode before after loading the bullet in the wrong way.

Makes me shudder every time I think about the glocknades used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. So glad they were banned under Geneva.

They used to explode, especially the first gen .40SW's which were actually modified 9mm pistols. Nothing beats the guaranteed reliability of the M1911. Glocks have been around for 30+ years. 1911's Have been around for over 100.

A 1911 CAN be nice, reliable and accurate...if you have a grand to drop and the time to look after it. Lots of people just don't have the money or time for that or would just rather spend it on the range. You know, actually shooting the gun they bought?

Of course, what do I know? I am just a professional gunsmith who works for a major retailer in New England, and regularly works on law enforcement and private security company weapon platforms.

What? That is the statement of someone who obviously doesn't know anything about firearms. A mil-spec 1911 runs you 400 bucks and is every bit as reliable and accurate as a Glock. You CAN pay more for a high end 1911, just like you can for a Glock. Try and get your info from a real source, and not Call Of Duty. And if you don't believe me, why don't you try asking on every firearm forum ever made, or go to any gun store or gun club.

http://www.championfirearms.com/category-s/55.htm I won't make any rude comments because I understand how hard it must be to go through life with a mental disability. FYI, this one link isn't special, I can just as easily post a few dozen more. Or you could walk into any gun store and see for yourself.

My bad, I didn't know we were using websites without proper sources or credentials to decide whether a gun was bad or not. What about this? http://anarchangel.blogspot.com/2005/03/how-to-make-glock-not-suck.html

"He’s a founding member of the International Defensive Pistol Association and also a member of the American Pistolsmiths Guild."
That's also Army Times that has been in circulation since 1940 and deserves no such disrespect.
My initial information came from a friend of mine who was always complaining about his needy 1911, and maybe I spoke up too quickly, but a quick search shows that many share this opinion.

The Glock versus 1911 argument is just like the AK versus AR argument from way back. Same results. Both have their uses, the 1911 and the Ak are crushingly reliable, popular, andpowerful. The Glock and AR are less powerful(except the .45 and 7.62 respectively), less reliable, and less integrated. In time they will be.

Many do, and many say that Glock's suck as well. The only thing that is different between the Glock and the 1911 is the standard 1911 is more reliable, and the design has over 100 years of use. Trying to say ti sucks is like trying to say that penicillin sucks. They have been around so long because they work, and work well. SOme people have had bad 1911's. But many more people have had bad Glocks. Especially the early models which were prone to major failure. Like I said before, they are not a bad gun and one day they may be as exposed as the 1911. But right now, they aren't. It's just a fact. In 50 years the Glock will be 80 years old and maybe it will have proven itself. But the 1911 will be 150, and still king. Assuming we don't have lasers anyway, lol.

ugh exhaustive conversation. I never said the 1911 sucked. I said it was quite a bit more expensive and needed much more attention. Also, didn't the glocks in .40 S&W only explode because their frames weren't made for the increased pressure? Because of that, I was always warned against buying a pistol in anything other than its original caliber.

Yes they were, I said that. And 1911's DONT need extra attention, the Glock does, and even it doesn't need very much. The 1911 is designed to go without care for long periods of time. The average modern 1911 made of good parts middle class, say 600 dollars or so, has a maximum expected lifetime of 600,000 rounds with basic maintenance and replacing minor parts. The average Glock has a service life of 200,000 rounds with basic maintenance and replacing minor parts. In addition the Glock has a break in period. 1911's are made slightly loose from the get go. Some may, but most don't. rally is is apples to oranges. The 1911 wins, but only by a little bit, plus its incredible history. The Glock only wins in capacity.

Reminds me of what my friend told me. One of his family members(forgot which one) found an M1911 while diving. Had markings from the fingerprints of the previous user basically engraved from being underwater for so long. Still fires

The fact is the 1911 has over 100 years of use, in every theater, of every country, in the WORLD. Without modifications. You CAN get mods for them, just like you CAN get mods for pretty much any other popular gun ever made. AR-15, AK, Glock, M28, M-14, 870, the list goes on. None need customization, they just all CAN be customized. a 400 dollar 1911 works just as well as a 600 dollar Glock. the difference is the 1911 has history to back up it's reputation. The Glock is a baby. Maybe one day it will be as acknowledged as the 1911. But right now, it isn't.

I prefer to carry a colt m1911 .45.
-Very powerful. Kill in one shot, two if he's hard to kill.
-moderately light, light enough to carry without feeling much weight, heavy enough to counter a good portion of the recoil.
-A classic great American design. Used by the U.S. military for over 70 years.

1. full frame steel colt 1911's are some of the heaviest semi-automatic pistols ever.
2. You could shoot someone in the chest 5 times and they still might not die.( It's all about placement).

For it's size, it's medsized, it's not above average weight. The slight heaviness to it improves accuracy. And yes 1 shot is very likely to kill. Even bring down most targets if it's not a lethal shot. With a .45, you only have to hit close ot an organ to likely take it out.

The 9mm in the other hand, it can take an average of 2-3 shots to kill. 1 if you hit a vital organ. You have to directly hit an organ to kill in one shot usually. Sure it's lighter and carries more bullets and it's not bad for the advantages that brings. Back in the day, the U.S. armed forces preferred side-arm that was slightly heavier, less bullets, but an almost guaranteed one shot kill. Now a-days the U.S. armed forces prefers a lighter, higher ammo capacity, weaker side arm. Not too bad, but I still prefer more the latter.

For those of you who swear by a .22? You have to be kidding me. You can shoot a guy in the chest, even in the lungs multiple times (if it even penetrates that far, especially if it's a .22short, and he'll still be in the fight for a litle while. Never trust a .22 for personal defense. .22mag is iffy even with hollow points.

TL;DR? .45 is best choice. 9mm is ok choice. Anything smaller can get you killed in personal defense.

1. as long as its under 15 pounds i'm fine with it. (and yes that's crazy for a handgun to be that heavy)
2. have you seen what a .45 acp does to a clay block. 5 shots and there would be no more chest.
