its called final fantasy because the first one was the final fantasy for the makers
they had no money and all their prospects had failed. so they funneled all that was left of the their money and favors into the first one
the next couple they called final fantasy because its what their fans knew and they feared the games would fail without having a tie in to the first
after that it just become tradition

He is right you know. They had planned FF to be the FINAL game they would make but it turned out to be a popular game and this is why we have the series of games out today.

I know this from my friend. But before that I used to always thought the name final fantasy is just because it is the final fantasy for the hero. That is to kill the final boss and save the world. I was a kid and my English was not good and I thought fantasy and fate have the same meaning.

The definitive answer is that Square was going bankrupt and this would be it's final game before bankruptcy. It did well however, enough to keep them going.

i thought i was because the leading game developer for some of squares games was retiring and final fantasy was his final game
#360 to #13 - anon (06/18/2013) [-]
That's not exactly correct, the main plotwriter would have quit working for Square and gone back to university if it didn't sell well, it's not that Square was going bankrupt.

"Is it true, I asked, that the game is called Final Fantasy because Sakaguchi was going to go back to college and quit the game biz? Uematsu laughed: It’s true that Sakaguchi was going to quit, he said, but the bigger reason, the real reason, was that Square was going to go bankrupt and the designers believed that it would be the company’s swan song." - Interview between Jon Snyder and Uematsu

Half-right.
The Game's "Final" title was one of desperation because the director, Hironubi Sakaguchi, labeled it his final game that, if it failed, he'd go back to university and completely leave behind the gaming industry. Square was having a ****** time before, but it was mostly Hironubi who was making the "Final" part.
It's also called "Fantasy" because Enix, a company they didn't merge with until years later (1987 was the first release; 2003 was the official merger), had relative success with the fantasy genre (Dragon Quest).

I've never Final Fantasy and I was wondering what goes on in it? Are they different stories with different people each time or what, cause I'm really interested.
User avatar #461 to #229 - thundagawd ONLINE (06/19/2013) [-]
They all have similar gameplay (with minor differences from game to game), but every single game is a stand alone entry. Every one has it's own story set in it's own universe with it's own lore and it's own characters, and in a way, that's the beauty of it. You know whenever you pop in a Final Fantasy game you're almost guaranteed to get an amazing story, and since every game's world is vastly different, there's so much lore and backstory to learn from exploring and doing little sidequests which makes the story even better since you have a better idea of how everything works in that particular universe.
User avatar #237 to #229 - squalllionhart (06/18/2013) [-]

I hated it. Im sorry, i've got to say it.
the cutscenes were god awful, levelling system is broken, first 10-15 hours is linear gameplay, blitzball was a mess.
That being said, I am going to go back to it this summer and give it one more chance. Any advice on how to enjoy it more? When i tell people i hated it, they are shocked.
User avatar #462 to #254 - thundagawd ONLINE (06/19/2013) [-]
Blitzball IS a mess, there's no denying that, but there's no need to play it either asides from the ******** mandatory tournament match in Luca. I personally really liked the sphere grid, it's hard to get used to and time consuming as all hell but once you get a feel for it it's pretty awesome. And as for the gameplay, FFX prolly had the most uncreative combat system out of all of them, so there isn't really any helping it if you didn't like it, though continuously cycling out characters in combat so everyone gets the same amount of XP can make it worthwhile in the end since you can build each character into a specific role which makes combat more enjoyable. As for cutscenes and backstory, feel free to do some of the sidequests to get a better insight on how the **** FFX's universe works. They aren't all bad and you can get some pretty neat **** from many of them. (Personally I loved the story, but it took like 3 playthroughs before I understood how everything worked, so in the end the backstory isn't THAT much of a *********** , there's just probably no way you'll understand everything right away).
User avatar #472 to #462 - fuzzypickles (06/19/2013) [-]
"continuously cycling out characters in combat so everyone gets the same amount of XP"
i forgot about that. that breaks an RPG and makes it tedious. every other square RPG up to ffx had characters not in the party level up its ******* broken. it literally makes battling **** .
User avatar #473 to #472 - thundagawd ONLINE (06/19/2013) [-]
As I said before if you didn't like the combat there isn't much to be done about it, FFX's combat was lame as **** to begin with. I eventually came to terms with that and more or less endured it for the sake of the story, but I never played Final Fantasy games for the gameplay to begin with =/

I've played all of them aside from the online games and spinoffs here is my take:
ff1. Really good, decent gameplay, fun
ff2. ****
ff3. Great strategies but the story goes nowhere, not engaging
ff4. overrated, I hate how every character has fixed abilities
ff5. Great strategies, great boss fights, challenging, and decent story, my favorite
ff6. same thing as ff4 but even more overrated.
ff7. Overrated but at least the concept of materia allows more open strategies and also decent story.
ff8. This game is fun for first 2 disks, but then the game becomes broken and it basically becomes aura + skip turns to get limit break = win in a couple minutes.
ff9. This game is the worst for one reason. It's the slowest game of them all. Having autohaste and the fastest setting is slower than any other final fantasy game at normal settings. Despite the good characters, good bosses, and good villain, the fact the combat is so slow ruins the game.
ff10. Too easy, unskippable cut scenes and cheesy dialogue, final bosses are a joke.
ff10-2. Better combat system, but horrible horrible story, so horrible that I get uncomfortable watching. Game is too easy.
ff12. Interesting rpg, good boss fights, decent story, likeable characters (except vaan)
ff13. boring, less engaging, super linear, but more challenging.
ff13-2. even more boring, even less engaging, less challenging, and they said it was nonlinear but not as nonlinear as anything before it (aside 13)

**** these guys thumbing down i agree with almost everything except 7, it was my first and i will be bias towards liking it. i also liked 10 but you give credit to 12 which i thought was cool a lot of people hate 12. 9was my least favorite untill 13 it didnt feel like final fantasy it felt like what RE4 did to the RE series made it mindless and linear taking out my favorite part of customizing armor/weapons and buying them at the store. I can add one more review for your list: I played ff11 for almost 10 years, i quit less than a year ago i can say it kept me entertained pretty much the whole time it was a different but satisfying version.
User avatar #247 to #119 - squalllionhart (06/18/2013) [-]
12 certainly has a nice combat system and it definitely has the open world that you would expect in a FF game, story is nice. only thing lacking in my opinion was music but that seems to be lacking in all the newer ones
User avatar #138 to #119 - hawaiianhappysauce (06/18/2013) [-]
I agree with everything except RE4. I actually thought RE4 was a good balance of horror and action. RE5 is a different story.
User avatar #149 to #138 - hasinvadedyou (06/18/2013) [-]
The only time i really died in 4 was because i didnt expect there to be reaction buttons on the pathway with the boulder it was too full of action and took out puzzles almost completely. If i remember right the puzzles they did have took me 5 seconds to figure out. I guess it wasn't a bad game i just like the mental part of RE more where it messes with you instead of making it about killing things back to back.
User avatar #463 to #149 - hawaiianhappysauce (06/19/2013) [-]
Yeah, It's definitely not as scary the second time around, and even the first time around it's not as scary as something like Silent Hill or the older RE games. But RE4 did have some moments that scared me: Garden with wolves, the castle sewers, IT, and the cage with the garrador. So it has it's scare moments. But I think the best thing about RE4 is the use of environments to kill enemies, the fact that you have this weak knife that is highly effective is used properly, and finally the camera allows unique gameplay and allows realistic perception of your environment. If "The Evil Within" comes out with this gameplay, harder puzzles, and more horror it would easily be the best survival horror game.
User avatar #465 to #463 - hasinvadedyou (06/19/2013) [-]
This is the first i'm seeing the evil within, it looks promising its been a long time since i've seen a horror game i wanted. Thanks for mentioning it i don't follow upcoming games i usually get them through word of mouth.
User avatar #466 to #465 - hawaiianhappysauce (06/19/2013) [-]
Created by the guy who made RE1 and RE4. He mentioned that the focus of the game is to do basically the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of capcoms bastardized recent resident evil games.

> Less cutscenes
> Darker
> Horror elements
> Isolation - the most critical one
> Claustrophobic
> Depth

That asshole was one of 3 bosses that ever gave me any real trouble. The others being Seymour Flux and Yunalesca.
What made it worse for me is that I never used anyone except TIdus, Yuna and either Auron or Rikku. You're "supposed" to use Wakka, but along with everyone that's not those 4, he was too weak to be useful.
That asshole was like "Tidus is the only one that can do massive amounts of physical harm to me when Yuna's summons and spells are less effective than normal? LOL, better back up so he can't hit me."
Thankfully, the second time you fight him as Evrae Altana, he was much easier even when you only get Wakka and Rikku, since he was permanently zombified so you could either keep throwing large potions at him or keep attacking the hatch locks behind him to open a giant hatch and suck him out (quicker, but you only get half the rewards).
The only boss I considered worse and not about as bad as Seymour Flux was Yunalesca.

The only reason i played FFX2 was because of the alternate ending, and that you could play tidus again.

What? I know nothing of this alternate ending. Playing as Tidus in X-2? SERIOUSLY!? HOW DID I MISS THAT!?

I'm pretty sure you have to get the international version.

Meh, combat is fun and sphere grid is tolerable, but the backstory is a poorly conveyed mess.

It was called "Final Fantasy" because the game was originally intended to be Square Enix's last, if I remember right. It was so successful that it saved the company, I believe. They kept the title.

I want a HD remake of IX, but I know there will be voice acting, and I just can't see the voice acting done right for that game in particular.

I'm not much of an emotional person, but when I think about all the time I spent playing these games, all the stuff I learned from them, the big impact they had on me as a person, I can't help it but to raise my hat in respect to every single person who helped in making these games, you made my life better, Thank you.

User avatar #486 to #485 - ljxjlos (08/19/2014) [-]
It´s true.

1: FFX
2: FFIII
3: FFXII

I did hate FFXII, too, when I played it for the first time,...put it away for half a year until I tried playing it for the second time. Fell in love with it as soon as I gave it a real chance.
User avatar #487 to #486 - angelious ONLINE (08/19/2014) [-]
It had horrible gameplay system, story was only so so and the main character was annoying.

but i guess to each his own then...
User avatar #488 to #487 - ljxjlos (08/19/2014) [-]
Well, FF has quite a history of annoying main characters. Vaan, Tidus, Cloud (kinda), ...

I personally loved the Story, it was a fantastic war-story. And I really, really digged the gameplay. Battling was fun as hell. If it had the sphere grid from FFX, it would have been perfect.

Yeah, tastes differ.

#325 - danielsky (06/18/2013) [-]
It's called Final Fantasy because the first Final Fantasy was suppose to be the last game the company ever made because they where going bankrupt. So it was originally the final fantasy of theirs. Of course though, the game was success and it launched a franchise.
#398 to #325 - anon (06/18/2013) [-]
99% true. The company was doing fine, but all of Sakaguchi game's up until then were complete failures. It was going to be his last game before going back to college.

"Final Fantasy" got its name from the fact that this game was the last ditch effort to make a successful video game. Luckily it became the huge success that it is today.
#228 to #106 - anon (06/18/2013) [-]
assuming you have a psp and 5 bucks, Start and end with final fantasy crisis core. then you will know if you want to play more
User avatar #407 - jacksipian (06/18/2013) [-]
Square Enix almost went bankrupt a long time ago, but before they did, they decided to release one last game before saying goodbye, they called that game "Final Fantasy" because it was meant to be the very last game they ever made, but people loved it so much that they decided to keep the series going, and here we are now.

tl;dr Square Enix almost went out of business, made Final Fantasy, kept it going.
User avatar #334 - blacknbluebrony (06/18/2013) [-]
My favorite Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance...

Don't hurt me

Yay, someone else's favorite FF is part of the Ivalice Alliance!
My first FF was FFXII, and flawed as it may have been, its gameworld is by far the most immersive and coherent I have ever experienced.

FFXII, Revenant Wings, Tactics, TA, TA2, Crystal Defenders, Crystald Defenders VS.
All of these are set in Ivalice.

Oh, and Vagrant Story!
The rogue FF.
User avatar #392 to #337 - bobbybeats (06/18/2013) [-]
Has it ever been confirmed that they take place in the same ivalice?
User avatar #399 to #392 - smokingman (06/18/2013) [-]
Sure, they share characters, races, locations, kingdoms, families, names, et caetera.
There's an ingame chronological continuance, and some characters are spoken of as "ancient heroes".
I know, most FF games have very similar elements, but these are stated (inside the single games) to be all set in Ivalice, even if some feature it as a "magical hallucination".
