Here's what I learned on my first day of Calculus

x = 0.9 repeating
therefore 10x = 9.9 repeating
so {10x = 9.9 r} - {x = 0.9 r}
9x = 9
x = 1
0.9 r = 1

My teacher then went on to explain that he was showing us that calculus is pretty much an entire math class built around the principle "whatever, it's close enough."

That makes sense. .9 and .99 are very different though.
