No one asked to be born and experience life, with all it's ups and downs. It's the gifts you don't ask for that are the best.

Just a little clarification on the pic, every year after the war, Konstantin Pronin and his comrades would come there to celebrate, drink, and have fun, for 66+ years.

But this year, he was the only from his that showed up.
All his friends died, I would assume.

My dad fought in the Vietnam War.
After years of drinking, my dad became estranged from his side of the family. He never told me much about the family or why we don't see them.
But one day, when I was probably about 8, we went to this park by our house, not like a playground park, but one where they do concerts and you can go there and have picnics and **** like that, and they had a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall. Something was different about my dad that day. We didn't talk at all on the ride there, and when he got out of the car, he walked straight to wall - he knew exactly where he was going. In about 30 seconds, he pointed at a name and started crying.
That is the only time I've ever seen my dad cry. I asked him "Who was he?" and he said "He's your uncle."

Mine fought in that war, too. Fortunately, he doesn't have any stories like that to share.

Not to say that I haven't dealt with losing a family member, but that's a really depressing story.

What kills me is to think that whether a soldier is American, German, North Korean, Russian, Japanese, or whatever; each man or woman had a life. They laughed and loved and had hobbies and ambitions. All of them thrown into War created by some long standing disagreement between governments or culture. There are evil men in the world and War is a necessity sometimes, but we cannot forget that we are all just people.

The one with the old man sitting alone and crying made me ******* tear up. It's always hit me hard seeing old veterans at memorials because I can't even imagine what it must feel like to be them.

I'm in Cadets (Basically just ceremonial military stuff, leadership, survival, and other life skills wrapped up into one military funded program for ages 12-19) and I was at a Remembrance day ceremony. I'm the deputy commander of my squadron (Air element, the whole of our entire core is the squadron, and I was the deputy commander of every single person who was in it) and the commander wasn't there because he had to be at a different celebration, so I was in charge of everybody.

I was standing at the front of my squadron waiting to fall-in with the ceremony, there were other squardons, army platoons, and old veteran squads that were there to remember their old friends. One man in particular was standing, waiting to fall-in like the rest of us, when his old age kind of kicked in and he wasn't able to march on. So his friends/people who were near him in the squad had to help carry him to the side of the parade square so he could sit in a chair due to his inability to stand.

He sat there with his head sunk and he looked so defeated.. I teared up then as well, because I know he must feel horrible not being able to stand for his old friends that he had lost.

I just felt like sharing a feel, old vets always get to me and I wanted to share.

At the end of the war pretty much all German "men" from 14 to like 50 were required to be part of the homeland defense force... so that very thing may have really happened, boys being sent into a meat grinder that was doomed to lose in the first place.
