Australia does have a monarchy. This is because it is part of the common wealth of the UK when independence was declared, part of the deal was that the British monarch would remain (to an extent) head of state which is why Australian dollars have the queen on them.

true, but she did say their "own" monarch, implying one who came from their country and is a resident.
