Does anyone have the source of this? I can't help but doubt him from the amount of things on his chest.

It was a Russain war vet from WWII who goes to the meeting place where each year he and his bud from the war meet. after an hour he finds out he's the last of the bunch alive.

#42 to #29 - trevanman (11/15/2013) [-]
so how old was this dude when he joined the war?
User avatar #43 to #42 - meegal (11/15/2013) [-]
I'm not really sure, sorry. You could probably find out if you do some research. I just have the picture though. I'm going to take a guess though and say 18 because he was sent to war months after marriage and you have to be 18 to get married.
#44 to #43 - trevanman (11/15/2013) [-]
and yet he had 15 children.
so he survived the war, got wounded on Iwo Jima, was sent home and made some more babies before kickin' it it 'Nam?

no wait. he didn't die during a war. he died as an old man, got full military honors, seeing as his wife is old, and they were married for 71 years.

Yes, they are. war is war and fear is fear, regardless of the nation's philosophies or ideals.

No, they aren't. Those are regular German infantrymen. The Nazis were simply a political party that took over control of the government in Germany. Imagine if the Republicans took complete power in our government, that doesn't mean that every soldier in the army is a Republican.

Now the SS were different, because (at first) they were a group of volunteer soldiers who were die hard Hitler supporters; but the vast majority of the German military consisted of regular German citizens who were drafted into service and didn't necessarily support the Nazi party.
User avatar #54 to #12 - doktorpaj (11/15/2013) [-]
Not the entire Wafffen SS was nazi supporters either, most joined because many of the SS divisions were seen as elite formations much as the Airborne divisions in the US. The organization SS who were responsible for death camps and similar acts behind the front was separate from the Waffen SS, which was mainly a military unit. Sadly the Waffen SS and regular SS often are mixed up resulting in the Waffen SS being seen as criminals.
User avatar #58 to #54 - plainarcane **User deleted account** (11/16/2013) [-]
I don't mix them up, I understand the difference quite well. The Waffen SS in Russia would throw Russian babies out of second story windows and catch them on their bayonets. An SS soldier once refused to accept blood from an American medic (that he needed badly) because of the possibility that there could have been jew blood in it. I'm sure there were decent men in the SS that only wanted to join because it was seen as an elite unit, as you say, but there were also those who truly were Nazis.

Nazis are people too.
User avatar #11 to #1 - SteyrAUG (11/15/2013) [-]
They're german soldiers. Not every german that fought in WWII thought it was fun to kill jews. Or kill anyone for that matter.
User avatar #13 to #1 - hlcptr (11/15/2013) [-]
Nazis are people too, and many Soldiers, even SS, disagreed with Hitlers drastic methods regarding the jews and other groups he deemed inferior. When the whole thing began jews were pretty much the most hated group of people, not just in germany, mostly because jews were (for reasons i wont detail here) moneylenders, and have been since medieval times. And its easy to hate smb if you owe him money, lets be honest here. Think about the bankers of today, most ppl hate them as well, even if its another level. Then along comes this charismatic guy blaming them for everything that went wrong in WW1, promising to restore germanys glory, no wonder people ate it up. Just look to some crazy american conservatives blaming 9/11 on gays and atheists, its a similar story. If you already hate a certain group you are much more likely to beliefe they are to blame for everything thats wrong.
But as the war went on and Hitlers concentration camps reached thier height, many wehrmacht and luftwaffe distanced themselves from Hitler, even going back to the traditional militray salute instead of the Hitler greeting. SOme of the most brilliant military leaders like Stauffenberg and Erwin Rommel even conspired and attempted to assasinate Hitler, who they deemed crazy and military incompetent. But the average german soldier, SS or regular army, was just a regular joe trying to stay alive, and didnt give more ***** about politics then any of you, just consider the NSA scandal: Not to put the two in any relation, but all the average American does about it is bitch about it on facebook.
So dont just assume all germans were "evil". There was evil on all sides just remember the treatment of Blacks in the US at the time. If you were born in these times, chances are you would have behaved the same.

All I did was asked if those were Nazis. I'm sorry if I offended you in anyway. Thank you for the knowledge you have given me. It's good to know that there were good soldiers in Germany during WW2. I hope you forgive my ignorance.
