They have daily Marathons? They must be in great shape
User avatar #436 to #14 - eunneland (04/20/2013) [-]
yes! it's a random marathon; whenever they hear a starting shot, they run.

It would suck to be from Boston visiting Detroit then; you'd be running every five or ten minutes out of habit.

Entire comment section is a war between who deserves more sympathy. I have a solution. Instead of viewing the deaths, both Boston and Syria, as a nation, let's view the deaths as individuals. What happened in Boston and what happens in Syria are not comparable on the national level, but on the individual level, they are the same. A human death. Whether you are the type who doesn't give a **** , or the type that pours their heart out for people, show the same amount of care, or lack therof, to everyone who lost their life. Stop looking at this as American vs. Syria; what is more tragic, and start look at it more as an individual loosing their life, regardless of where he lost his life at.

I really don't get why so many people care.
I honestly don't. Sure, it's wrong these people die in warfare, or die from bombs. It's wrong any of us die at the hands of someone else, but that's how the world is.

I don't know any of the people killed by the bombs. I don't know anyone killed in Syria.
My feelings aren't pouring out for them because I have no emotional attachment to any of them. I feel sorry that they are in those situations, but to say I am hurt and upset by it is a lie. A lie that many, many people say.

Thumb me down all you want for being some "heartless prick" but it annoys me when people give sympathy just because it's a bandwagon thing, or because it's "the right thing to do". The right thing to do is help in anyway you can instead of saying how sorry and upset you are by it. People who seem to "honestly care" should take actual action.
User avatar #270 to #196 - hauntzor (04/20/2013) [-]
I'm one of those people who involuntarily places themselves in the shoes of those affected, so in a way, I'm always empathetic in these kinds of situations. It's just the way I am. I wish I wasn't like that sometimes.
#372 to #196 - exlo (04/20/2013) [-]
I feel the same way. My 6th period Geography teacher however was absolutely ******* distraught by the bombing. He was just telling us about it and you could see the utter ******* depression on the poor guy's face. It's not like he knew anyone in the marathon or anything, either. He cares way too much about everything that goes down in the news for it to be healthy really.

Good guy though.

You've described me so well.
User avatar #495 to #196 - catassassin (04/20/2013) [-]
The thing is, there are people who care about all the death and suffering that goes on in this world. I can't say I'm one of them, but I know many who will honestly become depressed or even break down and cry hearing about something like this.

#209 to #196 - anon (04/20/2013) [-]
This is the attitude that means nothing will ever get done. 'I have no personal attachment, so why should I care'. It's your world, take an initiative to change things then, no matter how powerless you feel.
User avatar #210 to #209 - aesis (04/20/2013) [-]
I don't feel powerless.

I just don't care.

I can back up last two sentences and ad one more thought.

I think this post was targeting people who "care". It is sad that they are shocked by the three deaths in the USA but when they mention Syria, Palestine, Iraq etc. they'll either say that those countries and their people deserved it, or they'll say it's too far from them to "care". Something like double standards, and that is whats pissing me off...
User avatar #218 to #216 - aesis (04/20/2013) [-]
I know this will sound like a generalization, and I know it's not but the majority opinion of America seems to be: "If they are different from me, I hate/dislike them."

That, or the entire first world only cares when something happens in America.

I live in Dublin, in Ireland. And it's not a very safe city. I've seen quite a few bombs just laying on the side of the road, and that's how things go down here. Every day there is some shooting, or death caused by an explosive.

I doubt any of that is reported in America, or even acknowledged.
User avatar #224 to #218 - croski (04/20/2013) [-]
What you said in the beginning perfectly describes american nationalism (and the weird thing is, they a nation of immigrants, most of the population moved there in the last 150 years).

Also, I am very interested in these themes because I'm from Zagreb, Croatia and we had our liberation war only 20 years ago...

I acknowledge that both are tragic, but one is an incident compared to the other where people are fighing for their lives every day...
User avatar #227 to #224 - aesis (04/20/2013) [-]
Exactly.
Even at that, it was a very minor incident compared to the ones witnessed in the rest of the world.

It is weird hearing that from Stalin, considering he's alleged to have killed four times as many people as Hitler, only to be outdone by Chairman Mao
User avatar #332 to #261 - zorororonoa (04/20/2013) [-]
I thought it was 4 million more than hitler, not 4 times as many
User avatar #431 to #332 - lordmoldywart (04/20/2013) [-]
Hitler estimated from 6 to 12 million, Stalin from 18-24, so it's only 4 times as many if you say Hitler killed 6, Stalin killed 24 I suppose

Nobody panics when things go "according to plan". Even if the plan is horrifying! If tomorrow I tell the press that, like, a place in Syria will blow up, or a school in Afghanistan will be blowing up... Nobody panics.... Because it's all part of the plan. But when I say that one little Boston Marathon will be bombed... Well then

to me its not who deserves more attention. to me its more the people who sit there making jokes about it and the people who act like theyre edgy saying "it happens every day in iraq" v. the people who are saddened by all undeserved death, but are shocked that it has come so close to us. lets be real here. the closer it is to home the more people are inclined to pay attention to it. idk whats going on in iraq right now because im no where close to them. you could be standing in front of a shack that has a mansion 10x its size behind it, but if you get close enough to the shack you wont be able to see the mansion anymore. food for thought
User avatar #556 to #356 - cazabrow (04/21/2013) [-]
yeah that's fair enough. But the way this picture makes it look like is basically saying "Big ****** deal you had a bomb go off in your country, it happens a lot more over here, pay more attention to us." And i'm just thinking why the hell do syrians need to try raise their situation to people who can't even do a damn thing about it anyway.

I think that is a gross generalization. Most people know that our tragedies aren't the worst, but like cazabrow said, we pay more attention to ours because it is on our soil. I feel the same sorrow for both Boston and Syria, but I am going to post more about Boston because it is part of my country.
