There's a difference between a fear of something and an irrational fear of something.

Being afraid to hang off the edge of a 100 foot cliff is reasonable.

Being afraid to go to the top floor of a skyscraper, just because it's really high up is irrational.

This isn't ******* complicated.

As long as we are talking about irrational fears, does anybody understand why I am afraid that if I lay down outside, I will fall into the sky?

Are you by any chance a dwarf?
Casadastraphobia is common among dwarves.

Dude I ******* get that. I saw this one episode of code lyoko where gravity was reversed, Ever since then, I occasionally plan what I would do if gravity was reversed.

I have a phobia of clouds, ******* clouds. Not planes, not stars; clouds. That is the opposite of irrational; those mother ******* are plotting something.

being afraid of being on the top floor of a skyskraper is perfectly rational. A person with such a fear is simply incapable of ignoring the fact that they have such an altitude. same with insects. Fear of insects/spiders is a natural instinct that has helped us survive, because we would avoid every insect, assuring that we would get away from the dangerous ones. not feeling fear or repulsion towards insects simply means you have reduced instincts, which would make sure you and your ancestors would die out in a harsher envoirment.

^ What he said.
It's not what the fear is of, it's the level of fear that makes it irrational.

trypophobia-the "irrational" fear of holes in the body or just holes, idk. that **** looks weird. whatever you do, dont google search images of trypophobic skin. Some are shopped for humorous purposes, but still morbid as ****

I have a piece of dried coral in my living room as a sort of decoration thing, it's my mums, and before my friend joined funnyjunk, she was fine with it. She joined funnyjunk, heard about trypophobia and all of a sudden whenever she comes over, she 'freaks out' when she sees the coral. I have to calm her down whenever she visits, then hide the coral while she chills out.

well, i have a fear of heights, and i have that fear even when i am in safe place in that height. my mother has arachnophobia and she would be scared of spiders she knows arnt venomous enough to kill her, or even bite her. so yeah, i would call a phobia an irrational fear

I have a fear of spiders, mirrors, and clouds.
Two of those are irrational; can you find them?

The phobia itself isn't irrational. The way they deal with it is. A phobia is only a phobia when you act irrational in a situation presented with the phobia. Anyone who is casually frightened by said phobia is just scared, not phobic.

Fear of heights becomes irrational when someone doesn't want to sit on a couch because it's too high.
Fear of spiders becomes irrational when someone has their home specially built to prevent spiders from getting in.

Basically, it'd be when when the person does irrational and crazy things to avoid something.
