Not sure about in Netherlands but in British Columbia there are fences lining the highways with overpasses to prevent that

noone knows why.. but somehow it works (i live in the netherlands and drive under this exact bridge atleast once every 2 months to go to the hospital or some **** in the larger town near my village)

from what I understand from the rest of the comments, it's pretty popular around the world, so I would think there is some science and statistics the prove it does work.

That or....
it's a global conspiracy to waste money.

Without a doubt, some animals will have some sense. But a lot of them will still probably battle traffic.
