Nobles like to carry swords as status symbols but often aren't very adept with them. They could easily disarm him if such was the case.

Nobles were actually often trained from a young age on how to fight, as they were expected to lead armies and fight in battles, in those days a leader led from the front and was it was important for the morale of the laymen to see that the nobles were also risking their lives. As well as there always being the possibility of being attacked by potential assassins.

He was probably going to move them one by one to the execution room/stand. I think 'about to' wasn't so much they were on the chopping block as it was they where about to be sent to it.

It's also a game and there need to be some contrivances to allow the players a chance to succeed.

They might have been "captured"
and by captured he meant surrounded with no way out.
They still had weapons.

I'd say it implies powerlessness.
In example, being outnumbered 10-1.

Probably a locked door behind them.
You know the ol' "door closes and locks behind you" gag.

I cast summon sword?
I mean, several classes in 5e DnD have the ability to summon a weapon, it's not that farfetched that someone in the party can do that, or disarm any weapons the nobleman has.
I agree though, they should have been chained up if they were to be executed, even if it's a private execution in a prison.

Perhaps for the sake of being concise the OP left the part out where they got out of their chains
