Brienne is interesting partly because in the books (not the show) she's a big ugly honorable knight with a wonderful but soft heart who hides how much the words of others hurt her.

Actually for many rulebooks including D&D, Charisma was used to quantify not only your social skills but how attractive you really are (since the Charisma stat is essentially how well you can influence people).

So in this context, it does.

Where in the rules does it say that? Charisma is force of personality and being able to use that force of personality to dominate someone else, that's why intimidate is a charisma skill. Take Tyrion from Game of Thrones for example, he may be hideous, but he is extremely charismatic.

That's usually how it goes for the high tier units. Rhodok Sharpshooters, Swadian Knights, Sarranid Mamelukes and the stupidly annoying meatgrinder of Nord Huscarls.

Can't speak for Vaegir since I haven't seen them much and Khergit units are all around squishy trash that rely more on being annoying to catch both in the battlefield and in the campaign map.

Point buy's better overall to allow the player to play the character they want. I'd rather have somebody dump Charisma and knowingly suffer the consequences than be dissatisfied with their rolls. When I'm a player, and forced to roll stats, that's usually me who gets saddled with below average ******** that's much worse than the default stat array.

my luck is absolute **** but I still prefer rolling, in life we dont get to chose what we're inherently good at, it helps with the roleplay, which imo is more important that stats. if you cant make a character work with a few low numbers than you're not a great player

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but it's a stupid opinion. Who cares about what we get to choose in life? Life is not an escapist roleplaying game, and vice verse. That's kinda the point. It really doesn't help with roleplay at all for those of us who have character concepts in mind we want to use ahead of time. Roleplay is more important than stats, but stats also inform roleplay, and strongly effect the mechanical aspects of the game that are also very important. You can't be smart with an 8 Intelligence, and can't cast Wizard spells with an 8 Intelligence. And, if the mechanics do not matter at all to you, why not play another game that is less mechanics-heavy? If I can't qualify for the feats or use the spells I want because of my low rolls, or I wanted to be a certain archetype but can't fulfill that because my stats don't reflect it, I'm not a bad player, I'm just unlucky and got ******.

first off I didnt say roll stats straight, i just said roll them you can still put your high numbers into the fields you need them to be in they just might not be as overwhelmingly powerful as you would want. Oh no you cant use this massive aoe spell cuz the dice said no how tragic, the dice say no all the time and this isn't anything new. if you dont want so much random chance, how about you dont play a game that relies on dice rolling as its core mechanic

I don't need stats to be overwhelmingly powerful, and in fact dice-rolling usually ends up with somebody at the table being wildly overpowered, rather than point-buy which puts everybody on a level playing field (game knowledge aside - and game knowledge becomes a non-factor if everybody pools their knowledge to help each other make strong characters - as they should). I just need a 13 in Strength for Power Attack, 13 Dex for Dodge, and 13 Int for Combat Expertise, or whatever. If I'm working toward some later goal that requires all three of those, rolling my stats may prevent me from doing so. I'm not worried about failing to cast a spell due to game circumstances. I'm worried about never being able to cast that level of spell ever because I didn't roll well enough on the dice, despite coming to the table wanting to roleplay a mighty master of the arcane. I'm here to build a character to fit the picture I have in my head of what this fantasy person is like and what they can do, not satisfy somebody's fetish for random number generation. Rolling random stats doesn't help me roleplay. I already know, more or less, who and what I want to roleplay.

Random chance is fine in-game. I can actually do something about that. I can tweak it, affect it, maximize my chances for success by flanking, getting circumstantial bonuses, etc. Or, I can miss and accept the die results just fine because it's part of the game. A single missed attack or failed spell is a drop in the bucket. A bad stat roll affects my play experience for the entire lifespan of the character.

Also, the core mechanic of D&D is rolling a d20, not rolling 3d6, 4d6, or what have you. As I've said, I embrae the core mechanic of the game. What I don't embrace is random chance telling me who or what my character can and cannot be. So, because the dice say so, my character can't work out until he has 16 Strength, my character can't study History until he has a +800 to his History rolls thanks to feat X, Y, and Z, because I don't qualify for them. Missing an attack roll doesn't bother me, missing a vital piece of what I thought my character would be able to do, however, certainly does. My agency as a player is potentially (and universally IS) hampered by randomly rolled stats. Hence, it is abhorrent. If I'm asked to roll random stats, I'll just take the random array and likely be less powerful than everybody else in the group, but at least be able to do what I want to do with my character.

I used to think this, but then I got better at min maxing, all but eliminating the disadvantages of dumping. Now the stats are almost completely better than if I had rolled.
It helps to play paladins, who need to min max just to not completely duck.

On one hand, point buy puts all players on an even playing field, so you don't end up with one guy with 3 20s and another with nothing above 12. On the other hand, I just rolled up a stat array with two 5s and an 18, and i'm just itching to make a character out of it. He's gonna be a full-blooded orc and i'm going to dump dex and wis.
