I know no one cares and i'm being a smartass, but those things are called Memento Mori and some look really incredible imo. In case anyone is interested in that form of art.
#184 to #1 - anon (03/29/2013) [-]
These whofags clearly aren't, since they just think it's a reference to their stupid show...

I love Momento Mori, and I am glad that you pointed this out.
#28 to #1 - anon (03/28/2013) [-]
memento mori is actually a waz of thining, which often shows through in art, was popular during the barock (not sure if you can use that word in english, but thats what the time is called in german).
Means "Remember/Think of Death" in Latin

I am fun at parties, why thank you
User avatar #50 to #28 - wotanswolf (03/28/2013) [-]
Yes, i might have not stated that correctly. It's not the specific name of an art form. But that way of thinking you described is usually displayed via sculptures and other art.
User avatar #55 to #50 - fridayiminlove (03/29/2013) [-]
but what does it refer to precisely? something like the fugacity of life? or just contrasts between life and death?
User avatar #57 to #55 - wotanswolf (03/29/2013) [-]
Memento moriendum esse - Remember that you have to die.

It was just to remind people of the Vanitas. It's basically an older form of yolo except people realzied the philosophy behind it.
#138 to #57 - ophir (03/29/2013) [-]
Memento mori, used to be the moral of the old church (Catholic church if I remember correct) during the rennesaince they changed it into carpe diëm and in the 21 century they changed it again, into yolo. (jk) but the style of memento mori does indeed mean remember to die, it came from the old romans, who where afraid that, like a big comander who won a battle would think that he was immortal. so to be honest I think yolo come closer to carpe diëm

May I ask what those skully-astronaut-thingys do? And what does "count the shadows" mean.
User avatar #174 to #160 - temporalguardian ONLINE (03/29/2013) [-]
It's supposed to be the Vashta Nerada. A parasitic insect that look like shadows. In that episode the enormous swarm manages to get inside the space suit, where it devoured the person inside, and then by using the skeleton or what ever, moved around. As for "count the shadows" that's how they identified if the Vashta nerada latched onto them. If someone had two shadows that means that the Vashta Nerada is basically hunting them, and that they're pretty much ****** .

The half Human and half skeleton sculpture might be a tribute to the norse mythology God Hel, the goddess of the 9 realms of death. So its not meant to say but to actually just be a realistic impression of the Goddess Hel. Look it up.
