Okay everyone I need something explained: In the last episode, Clara Jumps on the side of the Tardis when it tries to go back to The Doctor. Now, when Jack Harkness did that, The exposure to the time vortex made him invincible, unable to die. Did Clara just become an unkillable impossible girl? or did I miss something with Jack?
User avatar #108 to #106 - immortalfear (12/27/2013) [-]
Nonononono, Jack didn't become invincible when he held onto the TARDIS in the Time Vortex. It was Rose who made him invincible. When she became the Bad Wolf and absorbed the time vortex, she looked into all of Jack's possible futures where he could die and resurrected him. That's why he can't die... permanently.

The episode your thinking of is when Jack clings onto the edge of the tardis, and its because of the fact he cant die, it takes them to the end of the universe in an attempt to shake him off. Thats when they find the master

I want to go on the record saying I HATED river song. Honestly, I actually felt bad that the doctor married her. Maybe that was the plan all along, make him marry her and hope he kills himself. Amy and rory were okay, but honestly, she just ruined smith's reign.

A character that appeared in less than 15 episodes in a 50 year old-show "is the show" ok.
User avatar #2 to #1 - flixoe (12/26/2013) [-]
"That is the show" means "That is how the show works. Loopholes and paradoxes and such."

Filthy non-Dr. Who casual.
User avatar #3 to #2 - thebestpieever (12/26/2013) [-]
"Loopholes and paradoxes and such" Which have only formulated in the show 4 times before 2010 (Father's Day, Smith and Jones, The Waters of Mars and Blink) and have only been an important, constant plotpoint SINCE 2010.
Classic Who never bothered to make stories about time travel 'cause they knew better.
Filthy new-who casual.
User avatar #4 to #3 - flixoe (12/26/2013) [-]
Evolution of television. The same idea of the show from the 60's placed as a regular series today would be unpopular.
User avatar #5 to #4 - thebestpieever (12/26/2013) [-]
Yeah, that is not relevant.
The central discusion is this: Can you sum op a 50 year-old TV show when mentioning an element that has been an incredibly minor thing in it for 8 years and a major one for 3?
The answer is no, you just can't. That's like summing up Romeo and Juliet as "Suicide".
Or Dorian Gray as "Some bloke tears a painting to pieces, then dies".
#80 to #5 - RosarioVampire (12/27/2013) [-]
you just ruined dorian gray for me. sounds like the entire plot to me.
User avatar #7 to #5 - syrenthra ONLINE (12/26/2013) [-]
The thing is, as you are basically saying, it is 2 different shows, there is the old Dr who which is the older stuff that wouldn't be popular today and then the new stuff. It is a single series but it is 2 different shows of content
User avatar #13 to #7 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
It's actually about 8 different shows, so no, you can't sum it up with just one of those 8 different ways of storytelling. Hell, even new-who is 2 different types of stories.
User avatar #14 to #13 - syrenthra ONLINE (12/27/2013) [-]
I'm not disagreeing about how to sum up the entire series. I'd say the new who could be closely summarized in this: Either the doctor or companion runs into an enemy that needs quick out of the box thinking by the other person to stop.
User avatar #56 to #3 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
It's a show about time travel.
User avatar #111 to #56 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
No, it isn't. Back to the future is about Time Travel. Doctor Who is about stuff, and the last two seasons have been about time travel.
User avatar #113 to #111 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
The Tardis travels through time. The Doctor's race are called timelords. Not about time travel, you say? Regardless of your grognard antsiness, time, travel, and time travel are certainly central aspects of the show.
User avatar #114 to #113 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
"ASPECTS OF THE SHOW"
Yeah, they're aspects, they're not the plot.
To say that Doctor who (the first 47 years of it at least) is about time travel 'cause he can time travel is like saying that the Iliad is receiving a letter from the Greek Army.
They're there, yeah, they're not the plot though. Doctor Who doesn't have a defined plot save for "Something is wrong here" and for 42 years that had nothing to do with Time Travel, then for 5 it was there as a minor thing and it has only been important for 2 years.
User avatar #115 to #114 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
I think we're talking about two different things, here. I'm talking about how to sum up the show, particularly to people who aren't familiar, not how to exactly describe in exacting detail the arc of the entire series.

When somebody asks me what Doctor Who is about, I tell them something to the tune of "alien nerd travels through time and space helping people and fixing things." I fail to see how that's wrong.
User avatar #116 to #115 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
Helping people and fixing things, that's the important part. That describes it, not "LOL Quirky time travel". (Take away the LOL, I'm taking the piss but it sill doesn't describe the show)
User avatar #117 to #116 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
The fact that he travels back in time to help people seems pretty important, too. I mean, he does it a lot.

Also, considering that when he first stole the Tardis it probably wasn't during "our" present, he's technically time traveling everywhere, from our perspective.
User avatar #118 to #117 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
Yeah, I'm not saying Time Travel is not important. It is; the very first episode is about going back to the stone age.
But just "Confusing Time Travel Stuff" does not sum up doctor who. "A very intelligent man shows up somewhere and fixes thing" is, for example, way more accurate than just "Time Travel" and it doesn't even mention it. You can add it "A Time Travelling alien who wanders around solving problems" Ok, that's fine too. Just "Quirky Time Travel"? Yeah, you can probably sum up the plot of series 6 and to a lesser degree series 7 like that. You can't sum up 50 years of a show, in which Time Travel hasn't been pivotal to the plot with JUST "Quirky Time Travel LOL"
User avatar #119 to #118 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
Nobody even used the words "QUIRKY TIME TRAVEL LOL" besides you. I think River's situation pretty accurately sums up what the show is about, though. Even time travel aside, it's a very "wait, what?" kind of show.
User avatar #120 to #119 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
My only rebuttal to that last part is, no it isn't. Really, almost everything in Who is telegraphed or pulled out of someone's ass. It isn't a show that's big on twists (well written ones, anyway). But that is a matter of knowing about narrative, which I won't get in here. Because you can write entire books around how to make a good twist so 2000 characters prove insufficient.
User avatar #121 to #120 - schneidend (12/27/2013) [-]
I wasn't even necessarily referring to plot twists so much as just general mindbogglery. The show is chock full of blue and orange morality, rapid-fire quips, and alien weirdness.
User avatar #122 to #121 - thebestpieever (12/27/2013) [-]
Again, I don't think so. Yeah, the first 10 minutes of every episode can be shocking, but after that they usually make sense or you discover they were written by someone ******** on a typewriter.
User avatar #9 to #3 - mylazy (12/27/2013) [-]
