A-Levels are exams we take in britain at the end of college (high school) and i guess he's not using his xbox and revising instead for the time being.

A-levels are what English students study in the last two years of their secondary school education (16-18 years old). They are standardised tests and are rather difficult, testing knowledge and capacity to retain and apply information more than actual intelligence. The grades we get in our A-levels determine whether or not universities accept us to study, so they determine what university you go to, meaning they are incredibly important. March 7th (today) was A-Level results day for the January exams, if you do well, then you're fine, but you'll still need to work for the ones in June. If you do badly, you have to do a ******** of resits and you're June exams. Either way, leisure time goes out of the window, and you spend a lot of your time studying. He is saying that he won't use his XBox anymore as he needs to focus on his A-Levels.

Hope my explanation helped :)

I'm not sure A levels have any real analogue to tests in America. The best way to describe them would be a final test to check your suitability for University.

They don't really work.

Sounds at lot like the SATs. The SATs are a ******** of trick questions that test your ability to answer stupid questions. Colleges use these because they are stupid.

The ACTs are a ******** of real questions that test your knowledge of actual studies.

A-Levels are a form of examination in the UK, of an equivilant level to your high school tests. After his results, he is likely going to focus and study on his A-Levels, rather than play on his xbox.

No SATs in England are done at the age of 10-11.

GCSE's are done at the age of 15-16 in secondary schools.

A-Levels are done in college, so the age varies there, but earliest you start college in England is 16.

Universities are like most in the rest of the world.

Actually most A-Levels in England are done in 6th Form, which is the last two years of education in a secondary school. People rarely do them in a college nowadays, unless they're redoing them after leaving secondary school.

Depends, most colleges offer the same A-Levels as most 6th Forms, but at college you can also do a college course that gets you some qualifications in the middle of a GCSE and an A-Level. Obviously that's not always the case, for example, Eton won't do Media Studies as an A-Level, but colleges sure as hell won't do Latin.

ahhh, thanks for the info.
And no im not English, but i was born in England.
And for the Latin, you can get a GCSE out of it, a mate of mine going to St pauls (by Hammersmith bridge) is doing it as a subject when he turns in year 10.

I know, I'm English, and I did Latin for a GCSE. But most places won't, is what I was saying. That's why i used Eton as an example to compare to a college, Eton will do Latin, but will laugh at Media Studies as an A-Level. Whereas a college will happily offer a Media Studies A-Level, but won't offer Latin.

And tl;dr A-levels are nothing like SATs, we do them in 6th form, posh schools do posh subjects but don't do the less academic courses, colleges are vocational 6th forms, 6th forms are the same as the Junior and Senior years of high school age wise. 'Kay?

On a previous account I had a go at a foreigner for complaining about people speaking English on FJ, which is quite obviously an English/American speaking website. I had no regrets, they were being a douche about it, saying that everyone on an English language based site should speak their language, or they were faggots.
