Doctor Who has been running since 1963, I assure you this is not the first time that he could not do anything.
He couldn't do anything to save the ones who died on Platform One.
He couldn't save Gweneth.
Any of the people the Slitheen killed.
Any of the people the Dalek the Rose revived killed.
People aboard Satellite 5
Pete and some others in Father's Day
The people who lost the game shows and were sent to be turned into Daleks
(then there's Boom Town, Empty Child, Doctor Dances, and Parting of the ways)

This was in one series. I will go through them all if you want;
He couldn't save Chip or Cassandra
People killed by the Werewolf
Reinette
People killed by Cybermen
Mister Magpie
Toby and the other's killed by the Ood and Satan
People absorbed by the absorbaloff
People killed by more Cybermen and Daleks. And Rose.

That's two series', want more? People die nearly every episode and the Doctor can't do anything to save them. And Amy and Rory were hardly the saddest end. I bawled like a child when Rose was trapped on the other side.

Amy and Rory were, until they were 82/87.

They lived out their live sin the sam eway Sarah-Jane, Suzan and the other left-behinds did.

THIS, people is a TRUE whovian. All the rest of you probably don't know who Leila is. Also, I didn't cry with Rose because she wasn't exactly a favourite but I BALLED when Donna lost her memory and didn't even care when the Doctor left the house. THAT was sad.

I understand he can't go back to 1939...but what about 1940, or 1941, or 1942, and so on. I mean, look at the ages they lived to...

He saved Rory once, 5mins later rory was gone again. Why have it happen again? It was just as much to save them from the suffering and to let them be happy as anything I assume.

They already saw their graves, going back for them would have caused a second paradox. New York barely survived the first one, a second would have destroyed it.
User avatar #7 - derkio (09/30/2012) [-]
There were a lot of times he couldn't do anything. Season 2, couldn't stop Rose from flying away into the void (luckily she got saved), Season 3 couldn't stop the Master from taking over the world, Season 4 couldn't Donna's mind from overloading, Season 4 couldn't save Pompeii, Season 4 couldn't save River Song, Season 6 couldn't stop his death (The universe thinks he's dead). There are probably a lot more and I only covered NuWho.

Well in Pompeii a whole heap of people died and also technically it was kind of like Rose died because she didn't exist in that world. Most of the people here call themselves Whovians even though they don't know who Susan or John Pertwee are, or even who Jackie is.

I saw this on Sunday, and I'm in Canada. Space channel airs it on Sundays. Although I'm not exactly caught up on Dr. Who mainly because I haven't seen very much of the 11th Doctor, I could see the sadness on the Doctor's face, and I died a little inside.

User avatar #94 to #75 - grimmapple (10/02/2012) [-]
Except if you were on set it would suck, watching them re-doing scenes, ******* up a scene and re-doing it, filming it out of order, AND the half-made sets and cameras all around. And many people don't have the ability to pause, rewind, or save episodes on TV. Seems like online has more of the advantages, although if someone doesn't have internet or computer access I can see it from their point. I guess they can't comment here though...
User avatar #37 - chrolt (10/01/2012) [-]
*cough* Donna *cough*

Anyway i think the whole episode wasa big disappointment. Not because Amy and Rory died, i think it was about time (yes i liked them but 3 seasons? Would have been too long imo) more because the whole episode felt like one big plot device for getting rid of them. The weeping angels take over a house in Manhattan and the ******* Lady Liberty but it gets resolved inside 20 minutes. There was none of the usual anxiety with the angels, it felt like it was somewhere along the lines of "Oh there's an angel there, well thats not good... Uhmmm keep an eye on it and we'll figure a way out." All in all i felt that the angels were the sidestory and that felt like a waste of a great enemy.

And they spent WAY to long focusing on the whole "if you read it, it will happen" crap. It's a book! Fiction is commonly found in books, just because the first half of the book is right doesn't mean that the second half is.

And now he gets to drag River along. Don't get me wrong i like River as the occasional plot starter, but i don't think she's going to be a very interesting companion, because we know how she dies. Which means she won't die, or get injured in any significant way.
#46 to #37 - hermanmachine (10/01/2012) [-]
I respectfully disagree.

I thought this was the scariest the Angels have been since 'Blink'. I thought they
were really sinister throughout the entire episode. Like that ******* Cherub blowing
out Rory's match. (the statue of liberty was cool, but served no purpose besides the
initial 'holy ***** factor).

And you're point about the book is incorrect. Did you miss the fact that the book was
written specifically about what happened? It wasn't just some random book the
Doctor picked up. The whole idea does have some contradictions with past
events, but as a whole, the whole fixed point in time thing still makes sense.

But you are right. The solution of the problem was way too simple. Just like every other episode this season. The fact that the writers are constraining the stories to one episode, makes them all feel a bit rushed along. This should have been a two
parter.
User avatar #48 to #46 - chrolt (10/01/2012) [-]
You might be right about the book, frankly i have a hard time wrapping my head around it. My point is that just because the first half of the book is accurate doesn't mean that the second part is, but i just realized that this point is kinda pointless because the second half was accurate.

I think i need to watch this episode again.
