Actually, most of his major problems arose because he couldn't bring himself to kill people who didn't fit his code. If he had just killed Doaks, so much **** wouldn't have happened. The only time he was kinda okay killing anyone innocent was when he had a family that he had come to love and needed to protect.

I would go with that single person since he's only killed 100 while the other choice has 100+ dead.

However, I would prefer zero murders. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen anytime soon on account of people being people.

I like the Punisher, but I prefer his black-cloak-donning progenitor, the Shadow.

Because while Frank is happy to just mow down a group of mobsters and go home, content in a good day's work, Frank's only adversary is crime, organized or otherwise, but the Shadow? His foe is evil itself, he's a force of incorruptible, dual-45-wielding justice, a jet black and blood red spector who's visage haunts the dreams of evil-doers anywhere, and he delights in haunting them, and revels in their deaths, often delivering some of the wordiest, verbose send off messages ever committed to memory. An example below from "In the Coils of Leviathan."

("Without the spur of retribution, your crime becomes mundane, your evil intent and uncontrolled consideration gliding towards the salivate pool of insipid pastime, a sort of breathing puppet gesture with no effort of personal involvement, while you cry that you're owed a living by the world, the crime of your crime becomes insult in addition to injury, the unasked question I take as mine to answer. As you fall through the night, my laughter follows, I will laugh behind you for the ones you gracelessly pillaged of their belief and hope, would you tell me now of your self loathing, your bile, your illness of spirit and substance, your inner affliction, your inner betrayal, your inner affliction, as if I didn't know? Batman, sadly, was a work of plagiarism. He was taken from the Shadow pulp "Partners in Peril", funnily enough, the only story where the Shadow was referred to as a "bat" and "bat-like".

For more irony, before the Dark Knight came along, the Shadow was referred to as the "Knight of Darkness".

Well they likely got the batplane from the fact that the Shadow has a wealth of agents and one of them is a pilot with his own plane, so they just likely combined that into "bat-plane", the batarangs, I don't know.

Also, they probably got the "Bat-family" from the Shadow's network of agents idea.

My only complaint is that Netflix did the stereotypical guy vs overeaching corrupt government action trope. It was good but Id like to see more of the Punisher Punishing more real lowlifes like in the comics.

But Agent Orange and Billy were in the comics, and were introduced after The Punisher's origin story was fleshed out about his family being murdered.

That said, I gotta say, I'm glad they aren't sticking to the comics. I'm glad they made it relevant to the world we are currently in. I say this because, I already read the comics. That's a story that's already been told. It's the same reason I refuse to watch another Spiderman reboot, they just tell the origin of Spiderman over and over again just with a different cast.

Everyone always frames this the wrong way. Should the Joker be killed? Certainly, the world would be a much safer place if he was, and evidently he can't be saved or imprisoned reliably.

But should Batman kill him? No. Batman is not the law. He stops criminals. But he should not be judge, jury, and executioner. The court system exists for a reason. Batman is accountable to no one but himself. The biggest plot hole in the DC universe is why none of these criminals have been put to death. The insanity defense must have limits, Joker alone represents a clear and present danger to the public just by his continued existence, and in any sane world, he'd have already been executed legally, no need for a vigilante to decide to kill him. It's unreasonable and irresponsible to delegate execution to a lone vigilante with no oversight. If the bastard has to die, do it legally.

Of course it is something that a lot of movies don't really get into.

In the comics it is revealed that Batman is really close to that "one bad day" the joker talks about in the movie. The thing that keeps him from going off the deep end is his code. By having an unwielding code he ruthlessly applies to himself he keeps himself above the criminals. It keeps him from being the judge and jury. That's why he only does what is needed to turn the criminals over to the justice system. Especially if he disagrees with it, he still leaves it up to other people.

It shows that Batman himself understands the problem with vigilante justice. Namely that there is no system of checks and balances.

Even if a judge sentences you to death, you can spend years appealing that to higher and higher courts. First you can appeal the verdict itself, then you can appeal the sentence.

If Batman decides to cut your throat with a batarang? Nope.

it's literally because Gotham is some kind of sanctuary city that refuses to send insane criminals to real prisons
all other cities properly imprison their supervillains, which is why all of superman's villains actually go to jail
flash's rogues? they go to jail, even the Trickster, who is basically a less cruel Joker.
DC has a fictional constitutional amendment that lets superheroes testify while refusing to discuss their secret identities
if the court agrees that you were the hero in the case, they can let you testify against the villain without your real name
Batman can show up in court and say "Yes, that's him Your Honor. The Joker killed all those people and I just barely managed to subdue him after he set off his bombs. I only wish I got there sooner."
boom: death penalty. Joker taken care of. The End.
Batman would have no problem with that, but Gotham courts won't even try.
The Gotham justice system is historically ineffective and blatantly retarded, from legally deputizing Batman to trying to give custody of one of his adopted robins to a supervillain that happened to be their last surviving relative.

It's illegal to put the insane to death by Supreme Court verdict. By US law, almost none of the Batman villains would qualify for capital punishment since they're all criminally insane, except Black Mask and Hugo Strange. That's their entire point of the villains and their dynamic with batman, they aren't just petty criminals, they're for the most part completely mentally broken nuts.

its not about about rule of law. Its about what would happen if he did do it. the 'justice lords' episodes from the JLU tv series framed this pretty well. If he kills joker, then it becomes easier to justify killing bane. then frieze. then poison ivy. then penguin. then riddler, then it trickles down until suddenly its easier to kill criminals than it is to bring them in, where does the line stop? people say that he could just 'stop' at joker but would he?

Everybody gives Batman a ton of crap for not killing the joker and such but honestly I don't think its warranted.

Here's a guy who's devoted his life and resources, resources that were given to him for free if not in a horrible manner, to fight crime on scales both small and big enough to make 9/11 look like a sand castle at a beach at incredible risk and cost to himself.

He catches these crazy people time and time again and hands them off to Law, who then do the same **** every time. Instead of constructing better prisons or transferring them more secure facilities they just slap them in the same place and hoping that this time will be different.

Batman isn't failing anybody, its people failing Batman. Not to say I don't find this stupid or that Batman as a character doesn't have flaws or anything like that

Well that's a bit of a complicated issue what with the executing the mentally deranged and all that. Honestly what should happen is that four security guards should go into jokers cell and very unsuccessfully try to stop joker from hanging himself, to which the whole world turns a blind eye.

Should be the ending after the second time he escapes in any show or comic.
