Dayz standalone is a great game, I encourage everyone to get it, you'll do fine if you remember a few keys rules:

1.) Don't trust anyone with a clown mask.
2.) If you both have guns drawn, 99% of the time they're going to shot you.
3.) Zombies early on are cunts, but they can't climb stairs yet!
4.) If you're a new spawn, high pop servers can be good for looting kitted out bodies but low pop severs for if you actually want to play the game.

Are zombies able to run in buildings? They weren't able to in modded DayZ, and it saved my life many times.

that, and remember, patience is the key. Before entering decent sized or large sized cities, walk around the outskirts, see who's inside, etc. And prepared to hold W for a long time as the distances between cities are realistic and will take a decent bit of walking. And finally, avoid coastal cities despite what people say. If you don't know how to work a map, just run inland and when you find the road, follow it until you find a sign, the sign will then show you where you are on the map (by city name) and you can then navigate through the many villages and towns on your way to the better places up north
