#789 to #6 - nonanonnon (02/01/2014) [-]
Different people wrote a new show that doesn't suck as much. It's a reboot, like Adam West Batman --> Dark Knight Batman.

Think of it a different way. People managed to take a show about technicolor ponies and turn it into something men are willing to watch. That's a damn impressive achievement.
#354 to #6 - thebaker (01/31/2014) [-]
MLP is just like another show for kids, it's a little funny to be honest, but these people take liking it to a whole other level. It's just like that guy with the room filled with anime stuff. Anime is good, but in healthy proportions.

While I agree with you on the most parts, I have to say, that one picture in this comp, with the happy guy in it standing outside with the MLP-playsetstuff, I don't find that cringeworthy.
I mean, it is fine when people are just enyoing the show, and when they like it, they can, right?

Study shows that most people who LOVES MLP too much are being shunned/rejected in society.

Can't blame them tho
User avatar #107 to #93 - tkgm (01/31/2014) [-]
Because they are awkward. They dress and behave awkward, that's why they are rejected. Everybody has the chance to choose and they took some style which is labled as social awkward and childish or just plain embarrassing, so YES you can blame them. I was a fat, distressing, ugly ass and shy guy, but I went through some periods in my life that changed me. Now I'm going to the gym since 5 years, dress "normal" and now everything changed. I can't blame anyone but me for what I have been and what I have become now. A standart guy with friends, a gf and I'm on my way to build a pretty good future for myself.
#253 to #107 - anon (01/31/2014) [-]
Actually, I can't actually say I know a single brony who is anywhere near as idiotic, and/or autistic, as those idiots up there, on that post. I, as a brony myself, can say that If I ever saw one of those people, I would be just as likely to want to punch them in the face for simply being an idiot as any merciful person would.

Not all bronies are that ******* idiotic. Just... Eh, 20%(?) of 'em?
I mean, I know me and my friends at least turned out okay.

User avatar #112 to #95 - erikus (01/31/2014) [-]
Hey no shame on you bro. In fact you can't say you dislike something until you try it.

I had to watch MLP first episode (or the half, as you) to realize the fandom was just straight stupid, it was still a little girl's show and it didn't have anything to make it attractive to older generations.

User avatar #151 to #112 - tpman (01/31/2014) [-]
I don't know man. First I ever heard about MLP was when I was browsing 4Chan and seeing people using them to annoy trolls(or I don't know). I just read some threads where words as " ****** " "Dick" "asshole" "floppydildoqueen" was used and someone posted ponies telling they want to be friends with everyone, even those that where acting like ********* .
Now I know 4chan isn't for kind people and is usually really harsh place, but it was funny to see those people insulting eachother getting paid back with love and friendship and you could really see it annoyed them to hell.

I thought it was funny, so one day I decided to watch the whole first season to know what it was about. and damn... it was filled with friendship, love and happiness. I could instantly see why 4chan would hate this and thought it was extremely funny.

so yeah, there was a month where I though MLP was cool. but rapidly the joke was getting old, and people didn't see it was a joke and became really big fans of MLP. they connected, they spread and now there are lots of them.

so yeah that's how I think it started.

TlR it was a joke that went over the line. Fedora people who never got compliments or hardly friends ,Suddenly found a world where they get both, and now they chant it like a gift from God.

User avatar #370 to #151 - mondominiman (01/31/2014) [-]

All i wanna know is why (seemingly many) bronys make watching MLP a pretty major part of their identity.
Alot of you stick ponies on your avatars everywhere and use ponies as reaction pics and all kinds of stuff.

Why? Why MLP? I keep wondering since there are no Breaking Bros, Walking Bros or Bros of Thrones or whatever, but bronys exist.

I'm a part of the fandom and I still question it as well. Aside from the obsessives, I've ruled it down to a few possibilities...

1. They're trying to gain the attention of other fans. The fandom is... well if you're looking in the right areas, rather fun and social. There are lots of artists, musicians, and people of other creative talent that sort of band together many people of different sorts. Ponies kind of stand as the beacon and glue in this case, and also stand as a reason to why the fandom is rather large.

2. The characters of the show are relatable in a way to the person and they identify with said character by collecting and using images of them. The characters of the show, especially a lot of the main ones, have granted, stereotypical, but also complex personalities. e. g. Rarity; a fashion designer noted for her generocity. And while a normal girls' program would probably be worried more about dresses than anything else, the show puts her as a mature and refined businesswoman, who while is caring and generous at times, also is noted to do so for selfish reasons, even willing to get down and dirty to get what she wants. Such simple, but individual characters make for good template characters (which allow for LOTS of spinoffs and crossovers with ease...) to identify with

3. The show has some pretty darn good reaction pic potential. Especially in the more recent seasons, they've put a lot of good work into the aesthetic design of the ponies in their animations. It makes the show and it's characters appealing to the eye and entertaining with their exaggerated antics and expressions. Something that is pretty popular to use on the internet these days.

And as to why MLP got such a large fandom compared to others... it's a myriad of reasons, some I've stated above, a lot I can't fit into a single post. But just the right combination to blast off.

I'm going to get hate for this, and I'm going to get support for this, but I'm not going to sit down and let it pass by. It really pisses me off when something I buy into is misrepresented, because it feels like a personal insult, and from what I've seen, this point of view is pretty widespread. So I'm going to answer your question. Feel free to take my answer with a grain of salt.

For most people, MLP is an enjoyable TV show. That's it. That's the extent of it. It's cute ponies doing cute things. There's nothing harmful or perverse in it. Some people just don't believe the world needs to be inextricably filled with senseless violence, anger, and sadness. For those people, including me, it's a way to escape real life, even if it's only for thirty minutes at a time on Saturday mornings. We don't obsess over it any more than fans of, say, Doctor Who or Legend of Korra do. For most of us, it's like a hobby. I own one figurine as a keepsake - in my opinion, one is more than enough.

What you probably thought the brony fandom was was a bunch of undersexed men projecting their fantasies onto almost childlike female characters (and animals, no less), and reacted - understandably - with revulsion. This certainly happens, but it in no way means every fan of MLP is like that. I don't disown the people that do this, but the reason the fandom has that stigma is precisely because of the "cringe factor" that made the pictures in this comp worthy of inclusion. Humans tend to remember negatives much more acutely than positives, and sadly, that has led to a gross misunderstanding of what bronies are all about.

tl;dr people like MLP because it fits their tastes in entertainment, and the pictures in this comp pick and choose from the worst of the worst.

If you haven't already, give it a watch (I recommend something out of Season 2 or 3), just to say that you have. You don't have to like it. You can hate it if you want. Just don't be judgmental of subject material you've never seen.

I don't know why people are giving this guy so much flak. What he said was perfectly reasonable, and he seems like a more moderate fan of the show. twentyandahalf and implosay said basically the same thing, just with different diction.

Anon is right, that really was awful.

I'm not even saying that out of you being a Brony. Even if you were defending Star-Wars, just the way you talked makes you seem like a fag.

For any arguments you have in the future: Everyone likes someone who gets to the point quickly, don't talk more than you need to, don't involve yourself in your subject more than you need to, and certainly never make yourself seem like a victim.
User avatar #132 to #83 - jukuku (01/31/2014) [-]

"It seems a lot of people misunderstand the feelings behind it, so here's my two-cents

For most people, MLP is an enjoyable TV show. That's it. That's the extent of it. It's cute ponies doing cute things. There's nothing harmful or perverse in it. It's also a way to escape real life, like most pass-times are. We don't obsess over it any more than fans of, say, Doctor Who or Legend of Korra do. And for some of us, it's like a hobby.

It's true that some perverts like it and some of us are the stereotypical neckbeard, but it in no way means every fan of MLP is like that. The reason the fandom has that stigma is precisely because of the "cringe factor" that made the pictures in this comp worthy of inclusion, even though that's only a few out of the bunch.

Also it's in poor taste to be judgmental over something you've never seen."

There, I improved his entire comment with 1162 letters to spare. He did not 'coherently state it', I did. He also added unnecessary points, involved himself where he didn't need to, over-typed, spoke with self-righteousness, and generally wrote like I can imagine those exact people on the comp writing.

If you feel the need to defend him, you go right ahead. But don't get your panties in a twist because what I say is true.

short answer: because it's a fad.

long answer: something popular, or something that allows us to connect with other people of a similar mindset will automatically be enjoyed more than it would without those factors, despite being good.

I'd say I "used" to be a brony, but I just got kinda tired of it. still, I spent a good amount of time among bronies, and sometimes you'll just notice people that actually like the show but hate the fanbase/community.

Well, I don't know... I personally like some brony musicians. And artists. Some of them are really talented and funny guys. I also find the show cute and funny sometimes. Not something extraordinary, but fun to watch. Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends are also considered kids shows though 'family shows' would be a better term , yet they get love on FJ and it's understandable - those are some fine cartoons. So, I think, it's fine to like the cartoon and to make some cartoon related stuff as long as you don't go and shove it up everyone's faces.

First statement is debatable
In short, "weird" relies heavily on the individual, and
you run into the problem where, if everyone is weird, is it really all that "weird"?

As for the second, every single fandom, fan-base, or belief has their own nut jobs. And those nuts tend to hang out a little too far from the pants, which inevitably gets them a steel-toed boot... which for some reason causes all the rest of us to still feel that pain.

What follows counts for you as well natabre.

For the same reasons as any other good show. It's very well animated and pleasing to the eyes, stereotypical but interesting characters that actually get some development, top notch voice acting, kinda girly topics that get twisted up to interest more mature audiences as well, good morals as the end of each episode that actually teaches some very good things without ever being too kitsch... The list goes on.

It's not at all like the previous gens where, and I think everybody will agree here, everything was so colorful and gay and girly and kitsch that it was just mental torture. Not even every little girl liked it. Then Lauren Faust got at it, and transformed in a show watchable for the whole family with hidden mature jokes that younger audience cannot get. People keep calling it gay for the simple reason that they still have the previous gens in head. What they don't know, is that we have episodes where one of the character goes completely berserk and crazy as all she wants to do is approach animals. Or when she almost snapped a bear's neck with a freaking wrestle technique. Or when there was a battle going on and one of them used another character's magic as a ******* gatling gun and shot everyone in the vicinity. That doesn't sound very girly now does it?

Now, the bronies. A couple years back, they were a great community. Kind, understanding, full of very good artists. The arts and musics they made are astonishing. But then, MLP got pretty damn popular and everybody started joining the community and it all went to **** . They were annoying everyone, trying to shove the show in everyone's throat, preaching "love and tolerance". This is when everything went downhill and never got back up. Also the porn. People were spamming R34 everywhere. So much that bronies were only known for this afterwards, even up to this day. Sad really. But oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

There, now you all know.

You haven't lived until you you've seen Celestia and Luna having incestuous sex with dicks literally as big as them.

fall? yeah there's a lot of crap to deal with at times but it's easily avoided, equestriadaily is still going strong without a hint of R34, art and music still flow through the veins of the true fans, and the cons grow larger each year.
#391 to #247 - adu (01/31/2014) [-]
That's probably the most accurate description of the culture behind the show. You have obsessives who bandwagon and jerk off to it, and then you have those that merely enjoy the show. I am not a brony myself, but I have brony friends of the latter description, and it is an important distinction to make.
User avatar #433 to #391 - kurbeh (01/31/2014) [-]
Oh, so I see you again, mister bearded Sanjiman.
Is that your trademark or something? I mean, thee pictures only exist since last sunday after all.
#456 to #433 - adu (01/31/2014) [-]
I have used Sanji as my avatar for quite some time now, but when I saw Bearded Sanji in episode 630 I immediately took a liking to the look. It's just so classy, but with just the right amount of silly.
I'm actually waiting anxiously for each new episode so I can gather more.
User avatar #530 to #456 - kurbeh (01/31/2014) [-]
I am not reading the manga, so I don't know how long he will keep this disguise, but I know that the bar they are in might be over in the next episode, a friend of mien told me.
If they take down those costumes after that, there sadly won't be much more, but I hope so.
Bearded Franky is best Franky : D

But nice to know, atleast you are easy to spot that way.
#537 to #530 - adu (01/31/2014) [-]
I heard from a friend that they keep the disguises for a while. If you notice in the opening, Old Man Luffy is seen in the arena, where a good majority of this arc takes place from what I've heard.
User avatar #655 to #537 - hanabro (01/31/2014) [-]
Oh jeez, do you not read the manga? I think I spoiled something for you then, and I feel bad.
User avatar #608 to #537 - kurbeh (01/31/2014) [-]
Well that sounds cool.
I am looking forward to that^^
User avatar #586 to #247 - BigDoktor (01/31/2014) [-]
I've seen some episodes, and it doesn't look very mature at all in my perspective. Sure, it might not be geared towards kindergarteners, but violence and craziness =/= maturity just like how fanservice and boobs in anime =/= maturity.
#593 to #586 - implosay (01/31/2014) [-]
I never said that violence and craziness = maturity.

"That doesn't sound very girly now does it?"

What's more mature is the audience targeted and the little things and jokes they have implemented here and there.

I'm still not sold on why that makes a good show. Like, MLP-level of insanity good.
#599 to #596 - implosay (01/31/2014) [-]
I'm not saying it's what makes a good show either. You completely missed the point. What I tried to say through those sentences is that it's nowhere near as girly and gay as the previous generations were.
User avatar #602 to #599 - BigDoktor (01/31/2014) [-]
I don't think that's the problem non-bronies have with it. As someone who's passively watched some episodes, it's still not THAT good.
#607 to #602 - implosay (01/31/2014) [-]
The problems people have with bronies are written in the last paragraph.

"As someone who's passively watched some episodes, it's still not THAT good."
And that, my friend, is a matter of opinion.
User avatar #619 to #607 - BigDoktor (01/31/2014) [-]
Fine, I will watch the first season and get back to you. In one week, if my avatar changes from Jack Frost to Rainbow Dash, then you'll know I concede.
#620 to #619 - implosay (01/31/2014) [-]
I don't think it's worth changing Jack Frost for anything.

I honestly like the community (The majority of the community, not the fringe autists shown here. They're plentiful numerically, but insignificant as a percentage.)

If it were just the show alone, I probably would've treated it like most other shows I have a cursory interest in. Sorry for the ******* of responses, but giving my own perspective after being in this fandom for three years now.

I have to say, I watch it because it's one of the best shows out there to watch. I'm not just saying this because "Oh, it's a good show", I'm saying it because almost all other shows that are out, right now, suck donkey anus. No, I'll admit, I'd call it a good show, and my reasoning would be something along the lines of, "It just kinda seems like a good show".
...That's it.

I'll admit, Before I saw my first few episodes; "Oh god, why is Rusty making me watch this stupid ******* **** ..."

A few episodes later; "Oh my god, is he going to made me watch more episodes? Ugh, **** ..."

No, It's not some kind of amazing show, to worship, or anything. It's a generic show, that has ponies as the main characters, and ponies as gods.

Oh, and some of the things in the show are referencing some good shows, or stuff you wouldn't expect to think of having in a Kid's Show. Slavery, for example, appears in, like, four different episodes. Literal slavery. Not only mentioned, but shown, and explained.
User avatar #835 to #177 - tomorrowsnightmare (02/01/2014) [-]
Personally I just find the show funny. Except for Spike. He's a faggot.
#452 to #177 - bellajoy (01/31/2014) [-]
I would have to say that it is the purity of the show, for me. I see, and experience, such dark things that I never want to go through. Sometimes, if I am feeling particularly low, I can force myself to watch an episode or two and I feel so much better afterwards. I don't enjoy the show as much as others as far as my fandom, but I do feel a twinge in my self esteem when I see pony-bashing posts.

In all seriousness, it is one of the typical things that attracts an autistic Audience

back in the 80s you had Thomas the tank engine, and card games like Yugioh have a large aspergers userbase ( I know i seen then when i used to go to tournaments)

they tend to latch onto cultures like this because it makes them feel part of some sort of community that otherwise would be alien to them. uniting under a banner over particular subject, but yea the userbase now is very much in that spectrum i feel, whereas before hand you had a psuedo hipster outlook on it, but now its a mainstream phenomenon the communinty gets that much worse. I mean hell even WoW is the same.

I always see the teens and just remember how ******* awkward that stage of life was for everybody. I guarantee each and every one of us had an experience just as cringeworthy as many of these. Fortunately for most of us, it wasn't broadcast and recorded for posterity. I've got pictures I look at and think "Goddamn, what the **** was I thinking then?" but they're mine and mine alone and now they're stuffed deep in the back of my closet all but forgotten. Thank God puberty and Facebook didn't coincide with each other. I'd like to think I wouldn't have done anything nearly as bad as these, but I just don't know. I mean, look at who it is, it's not just geeks, nerds, jocks, or any other single group, it's everybody. Absolutely everybody is that bad at that age, some are just unlucky enough to have it saved for eternal public shaming. We grow out of it eventually, but that period before we do is absolutely miserable for all parties involved. I laugh at them, but I completely understand what's going through their minds. There's still hope for them.

...But then there's this ************ . This man is just ****** in the absolute least literal sense of the word.

The solution to that problem is to not sign up for any of that **** . And try not to get in embarrassing situations like dat.
#576 to #554 - kingpongthedon (01/31/2014) [-]
A. Not having a Facebook profile yes, I realize that this particular picture is from okCupid now is like not having a phone ten years ago. Sure you don't need it, but it's gotten to the point that it's all but expected of you to have one. Hell, some businesses straight up won't hire you if you don't have a FB profile. It's seen as a giant red flag if you don't have one.

B. They have no ******* clue that what they are doing is embarrassing. They think what they are doing is the epitome of cool. Trying to avoid embarrassing situations is exactly what they were doing.
