How do they even know that there won't be any more avatars if one dies in the avatar state? Its obviously never happened before...

Well, the spirits defy time, right? So they've seen it happen.

"oh, I'm nailed to a cross where I will be able to do absolutely nothing except die, I'd better go avatar state"

or I'm sure some people will say what if he was already in the avatar state when he was captured so

"oh wow I've been nailed to a cross for days but I'm still in the avatar state, and I will be until I die"
#2 to #1 - upyoursnumbnuts (12/13/2012) [-]
So why do you believe that? Because you read it in a book?
#3 to #2 - snigrog (12/14/2012) [-]
there's historical, non biblical evidence that Jesus existed. I don't really wanna go research all this **** for hours but crucifixion was most definitely a real thing that happened pretty frequently, so it's not all that unlikely that he would've died like that. I'm not a christian or anything I'm not gettin all butthurt, I was just offering some criticism on this theory

also if you're willing to suspend your disbelief far enough to believe Avatar ties to this I think you can suspend your disbelief far enough to believe someone named Jesus died in a way many people died back in those days

gif only somewhat related

I'm not a Christian either and I don't believe that a man named Jesus died by cruxifiction. Perhaps it was a man named Joshua. If they got that much wrong then what else is wrong?
User avatar #12 to #4 - commontroll (12/14/2012) [-]
You're not to bright are you? Jesus is simply the Greek version of Joshua. Which was actually pronounced completely differently than we pronounce it. It's just that most people spoke Greek in the days of the Pax Romana, so they used Greek names (Matthew, Luke, John, Mark, Peter, Thomas, etc.) so people could understand their names better. Especially since a lot of names in those days were basically just combining some words and making it sound good.
#45 to #12 - upyoursnumbnuts (12/14/2012) [-]
Then why is there only one Jesus mentioned in the bible and five Joshuas?
User avatar #46 to #45 - commontroll (12/15/2012) [-]
Because it's a recurring name. It simply means "Savior."
#47 to #46 - upyoursnumbnuts (12/15/2012) [-]
So Joshua means savior?
User avatar #48 to #47 - commontroll (12/15/2012) [-]
Yup. Savior/deliverer.

Either way I suggest you get into the habit of reading up on your facts, this might produce some higher quality assumptions.

Actually crucifixion did not exist during the time Jesus was alive. In the book, he was put on a large stake( | ) rather than a cross( -|- ). The cross was implemented hundreds of years later. People only think he was crucified with a cross because the word for cross and stake are the same but had different meanings in different times.

So it's unlikely that Jesus, if existed, was ever actually "crucified". He was just thrown on a stake in the ground until he died.

I thought the historical evidence pointed to "Jesus" being multiple people? But then people started accounting all these good deeds to one man?
#6 to #2 - esmebuffay (12/14/2012) [-]
How the **** else are people supposed to learn things about history? How would people learn about things like the renaissance? Find someone that was alive back then?
#8 to #6 - upyoursnumbnuts (12/14/2012) [-]
My point was that he read it in the bible and not an unbiased text.
User avatar #9 to #8 - esmebuffay (12/14/2012) [-]
Ever text is biased. Ever heard the phrase "history is written by the victors"? It doesn't matter what it is, information will and always has been influenced by the writers even if it's a retelling of historical events.

I'd find it hard to believe that someone in the avatar state couldn't bust his way off of a cross
User avatar #31 to #22 - ronyx (12/14/2012) [-]
What if it wasn't a fully realized avatar yet?
User avatar #32 to #31 - LonelyCamel (12/14/2012) [-]
Aang ****** **** up in the Southern Air Temple
User avatar #33 to #32 - ronyx (12/14/2012) [-]
But if Jesus was a waterbender as stated below, then he couldn't have gotten out of the cross. Remember how many times Aang was just tied and couldn't escape.
User avatar #35 to #33 - LonelyCamel (12/14/2012) [-]
ya but I don't remember him ever being tied up in the avatar state, also if you're in the avatar state you have all the past knowledge and powers of previous avatars, fire bend that wooden cross
User avatar #37 to #35 - ronyx (12/14/2012) [-]
True dat, but what if Jesus was like Korra who couldn't go into avatar state even in extreme cases? Aang under emotional distress could go into avatar state, but Korra couldn't.
User avatar #38 to #37 - LonelyCamel (12/14/2012) [-]
then he wouldn't have died in the avatar state
