You can watch TLOK without watching ATLA but it's much more epic if you watch ATLA first then TLOK   
   
Overall, I'd say ATLA is one of (if not the) most well-made shows on earth in terms of characters, plot, character dynamic and all that other nonsense no one else really notices but we all secretly appreciate.

It's best to watch the first series before just so you know why everything is happening the way it is and so you understand the backstory.

I only saw some part of the original show and I liked it, but then we moved and my parents didn't get cable in our new house so I didn't finish watching the series.
I'm watching LOK right now and some things don't make sense- for example: metalbending.

I know that feel bro. Hurricane Katrina happened right when the second season came out for me so I missed a lot of it till I could catch the reruns. And while I don't have any links off the top of my head, you can try the dvds.
