Well if you think about it, in the LOK they do have very high advances in technology for both sea and air based transportation. If you compare the culture in the LOK to real life, it is around the 1920's-40's. At this point, we have made an extremely precise mapping of the world. Don't see how they couldn't have.

I'm not religious or anything, But while the church did hold back knowledge and science back through the 1000-1500's, If it weren't for them we would have lost what little scraps of knowledge the church and the monks managed to preserve during the dark ages. Why they're called the christian dark ages idk, it wasn't christianity's fault rome fell, it was because it was an overstretched bloated corrupt excuse for an empire. I think overall they helped us advance more than they set us back.
