this comment proves that there are more lazy people out there in this world than there are intelligent, free thinking, positive people. the kinda people who would rather just click a button to get involved than type something or send a picture . these morals would work well in todays society and they are working with some people, there are people out there who live like this and they make the world a better place to be in!

That's the problem though, we stopped thinking. And it's just a vicious cycle, it's getting worse.

But are these necessarily 'godless' morals? Many of them, such as 1 and 2, are similar to the ten commandments. I think it would be possible to adhere to a religious lifestyle and still recognize these rules. Just don't be one of those Westboro nuts.

It's godless in the same sense that it's football-less, bear-less and skyscraper-less.

Yeah, it has nothing to do with god, and OPs a jackass for taking it about religion.

Bertrand Russell was the "OP" and this was his argument that Atheists can function in society just as well as theists. It isn't arguing that god doesn't exist, it only protects atheists from moral scrutiny which today isn't really an issue like it was in the 50's and 60's.

I don't think that this post was implying that these morals can only be observed without a deity, but rather that they COULD be observed without one. Honestly i can't see why people get so fired up about religion. I'm an atheist but the thought of whether or not there is a god doesn't even cross my mind unless someone else brings it up.

But are godly morals necessarily godly?

In my opinion, calling these commandments "godless morals" is a category error. It's not about designing morals that are godless (or godly), the question is more profound: whether or not morals, by their very nature, are in fact divinely inspired, and if we are capable of maintaining morals without a divine spark. Besides, designing a moral framework requires a moral context in which you base yourself. Every secular community in the West, despite their rejection of a deity, are still undeniably influenced by Christian ethics, simply because they exist in a society which has cultivated Christianity (albeit in a varying degree) for millenia. When such an instance presents an 'independent' framework that one can adhere to (like here), it really is just a set of reprocessed and regurgitated Christian morals. They compensate for that by being overly self-righteous, of course.
It's also worth mentioning that many, if not most of these societies are well-aware of their Christian philosophical heritage, but have taken an honest decision in not following the theology.

The content is just another example of atheist pseudophilosophy. Nothing to see here, really.

I have no clue why I put a hyphen between "well" and "aware". Presumably I forgot to empty the retard tank this morning.

He doesn't mean it in that sense, I think it's just the 'Good Without God' argument, that his base morality does not require religion.

Because I don't know whether you're denying them close to the Satanic Commandments, or if you're saying it's not weird, I have the comparison here

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence! ( 6. Do not attempt to live without vanity...)

2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams! (7. Do not think of yourself as a wholly self-contained unit)

3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit! (1. Do not lie to yourself)

4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates! (5. When you have power, use it to build up people, not constrict them)

5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek! (9. Be just/ 3. When you think it's your duty to inflict pain...)

6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires! (8. Be reliable/ 10. Be good-natured)

7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all! (4. When you desire power, examine yourself closely as to why you deserve it)

8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification! (6. Do not attempt to live without vanity...)

9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years! (2. Do not lie to other people unless...)

Although I can fully see the comparison being a bit of a stretch, I can also see how it's similar in general attitude and mind-set. Also, please keep in mind that LaVeyan Satanists (where these rules derive from) use Satan as a metaphor for truth, empowerment, freedom, and justice

The Satanic Commandments teach self adoration and self worship. Bertrand Russell is conveying modesty. There are similarities, but the same could be said about Russells commandments and the original commandments.

I wouldn't say he's conveying modesty so much as "Don't be a dick". He even states that one cannot live in modesty, but must choose what they take pride in.

Not really, at least not in my view. From what I know about the original 10 commandments a good portion had nothing to do with yourself or growth (such as keeping sunday holy, or serving no god BUT 'god')

Even so, I won't argue over it. Bertrand Russell is a great person, and we can both agree that no '********** should occur in content just trying to portray benevolence

Nah. When people start to insult the whole religion than it's wrong. this is insulting the people who have twisted the religion. Fun fact. Suicide was never a sin until a pope made it one because people were killing themselves to be with god.

What happened is that Christians became robbers and tried to get killed so they could "be with god"
