Consider that if he ended the final step, all humanity would have achieved immortality, but also would have lost it's individualization. For me, it was the ultimate act of bravery, coming from a character so introverted.

Also, the original plan was greedy, made solely for the purpose of the council to stay alive forever, and Gendo Ikari to reunite with his dead wife.

i always thought gendo was ******* retarded, "reunite with your wife" oh, you mean the one you have available in that ******* giant robot? no worries, i'd forget too.
also, instrumentality would not work for dead people since they wont be liquified and unite with the rest of the living

Why does everyone hate Shinji?
Because he reacts like a normal human and not some badass super-anime protagonist that makes him **** in everyone's eyes?

It's ******* boring to watch a pussy. It's even more boring when the pussy never really grows up. And it's even more aggravating that said pussy never appreciates the opportunities given to him. Like, I don't know, a 40 meter tall cyborg...

And he never. *******. learns.

And he doesn't react like a normal human being. The character shinji is directly correlated with the directer of the anime, with his bouts of depression, doubts, and near-experimentation with homosexuality... The director is (clinically) ****** up in the head, and he based shinji off himself... Just put some giant robots in there because that's what japanese people do.

Uh. The world is collapsing around him, all his friends are being killed off, he is forced to kill giant terrifying aliens that spew blood everywhere when they die, all of his friends eventually turn on him (in the rebuild this happens for pretty much no ******* reason too it's ********, they tell him to fight some alien and he does then they all hate him in the next ******* movie?) and he's left pretty alone for most of the series with no real moral support.

It's pretty human for him to turn out the way he has.

He actually isn't forced to do anything. The very first episode, he had the option to leave. And he had multiple opportunities to do so freely.

But the psychology of the matter is that he just pilots it to get his father's approval. Which for me, is a **** story driver.

This is exactly how I viewed Evangelion for like a decade at least. Which was a shame, because the Eva's themselves are ******* cool as all ******* balls.

As the user below me said (#13), watch the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. They're, first of all, beautiful. Secondly, they change the story pretty significantly and ****... Unfortunately Shinji is still a faggot... At least, not a gargantuan faggot like he was in the series though.

that is 100% accurate. Also i was a little upset about the fightscenes in 3.33 which where much more standard mech than the meaty feel you got from those in the series and 1.1/2.2. also the whole beastmode thing was ridiculous, the cats didn't fit the back story at all. if you want to know my prediction for the rest of the series they're just going to keep combining robots (which was kinda cool) and turning them into cats until eventually all 5 evas realize they can do both at the same time and fly off to a distant planet in space where they will be discovered years later by a civilization in need and become the all powerful VOLTRON! I see no other possible outcome.

The creator was using him as a metaphor for Fans of Mecha and/or Harem anime and the otaku fan base as a whole. The entire series is the creators giant middle finger directed at anime fans saying "this is what I think of you people". which is why shinji is an indecisive little bitch that runs away from everything and masturbates to comatose girls.

This of course backfired greatly because everyone loved it because they didn't see how deep the deconstruction really went. It wasn't until later when the original creator made several public comments and stopped working on evengellion altogether that people figured it out.

MFW I read an article on it and realized

The creator wasn't giving the middle finger. The anime was a deconstruction, but it wasn't out of hatred for the fans, but rather because it was a smart take on the robot genre.
I know it might blow your mind, but not all people that read manga and watch anime are fat antisocial losers that live in their own little world.
And the deconstruction might be well-written, but not something that "no one realized how deep it really was". The creator himself said the ending was a pile of nonsense.

I know that not all anime fans are like shinji( I am an avid anime fan myself). What I am saying is that the original writer wrote shinji to be a personification of what HE thought anime fans and otakus were. The series was his way of saying "This is what I think of your tastes, and this is what I think of you."
When i said that most people didn't realize "how deep it went" what I should have said was they thought it was a deconstruction of the genre at first and not of otaku culture. The guy hated avid anime fans(as was the case of most people in japan at the time, of course that has changed a bit over time) and was pissed when they enjoyed his mockery of them.
PS: I made this comment literally a month ago, slowpoke.jpg

Ah, I see. Well, many people believe the important thing is the question, not the answer. I myself believe that the creator wasn't trying to telling people he thought they were weak and wimpy, and I find it REALLY hard to believe that the anime is a deconstruction of the otaku culture as well as a deconstruction of the robot genre. If you don't mind, would you please give me a link to a page that the creator admits disliking people who look too hard into things? I don't doubt it, considering how crazy we can be about some things.

And, since I'm out of funny things to say here, have this gif.

ACTUAL EXPLANATION AHOY!

Episodes 25 and 26 show what is going on inside Shinji's head during the Human Instrumentality Project apocalypse. Chronologically, they take place about 3/4 of the way through the End of Evangelion movie as others have noted, EoE is what is usually considered the "real" ending to the series - you should absolutely watch it when you get the chance. . During EoE, Shinji basically loses his body, kind of like he does earlier in the series when he gets dissolved inside Unit 01. 25/26 show his train of thought as he thinks about his relationships with other people and his own sense of self-worth. Eventually, he realizes that he wants to live with other people, even if those people might end up hurting him, and this realization allows him to sort-of undo the apocalypse.

tl;dr - Episodes 25/26 and the EoE movie show 2 different but complimentary parts of the end of the series. Here's a timeline, if that helps...

Well, they are 14 year old CHILDREN placed into symbiotic combat Biomechs and sent out to be the first, last, and only line of defense against an unknown aggressor which wants to, and can, exterminate the human race. Did I mention that the pilots act less like the driver of a car and more like a Central nervous system and as such can feel the pain of any damage that their Biomech recieves, up to the point of actually having that damage replicated on their own bodies. Oh by the way, one pilot is haunted by the ghost of his mother that is in his craft, the other pilot suffers PTSD from her mother's suicide (and is later forced to relive the event vividly when an angel rapes her mind), and the last pilot is a clone of the first pilot's mother who evidence suggests has died at least once before and been replaced with a spare. And all of that is just the START of the emotional damage these children had BEFORE they became pilots.

I'm a retired soldier. I pulled two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. I've seen, done, and suffered through horrible things. I am not the least uncertain or ashamed when I say that enduring anything close to what the pilots in NGE suffer through would break me completely. And these are children, whose only concern in life should should be "Gotta catch'em all" or at MOST trying to work up the nerve to speak to the opposite sex.

So yea, it's probably not a coincidence that as the series went on they pilots started to appear more and more mentally ****** up, cause they were!

Even if it was some of the "**********************" shows, Evangelion is still one of my favorites shows, sure, its not the best, but I enjoyed

That scene in End of Evangelion with Asuka fighting the Eva Series was the most intense white-knuckler I've ever experienced in fiction.

And the way it ends is one of the most both horrifying and heartbreaking things I've ever witnessed.

Not that i know of, but Re-take is a professionally done fan alternate ending and it is glorious. It doesnt keep to the whole psychological aspect making it easier to understand but it still fits Eva in my opinion. You should definitely read it. You wont be disappointed

Christ, that was hard to watch at first. That was and ungodly cruel way to die.

It was intense. Best scene in evangelion on my opinion. I love dark stuff.
